Air Conditioner Covers for Apartments 51 to 112 (CT II)

Beginning around October 15 the maintenance crew will place the covers on the window air conditioner units of Clearview Terrace II (apartments 51 to 112). If you do not wish to have a cover placed on the unit, call the office before October 12. After October, no covers will be placed on the AC units.

Fall Yard and Bake Sale The semi-annual yard and bake sale will be held in the community

room on Thursday and Friday, October 11 and 12, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The last date for donating yard sale items is Tuesday, October 2. Reminder: There will be no activities in the community room from October 8 until October 12. We will gladly accept donations of baked goods that will be sold along with hot dogs,hot sausages and sliders. Please bring your baked good donations to the kitchen before noon on October 10. We especially need someone to make fudge to be sold at the Yard Sale. We are also accepting donations of water and soda (coke, diet coke, Pepsi, root beer, lemon-lime). Sale for Special Customers! On Wednesday, October 10 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. the tenants (sorry – no friends or family) of Clearview Terrace are invited to shop at the yard sale!

Strong Workers Needed – Attention Men and Women!

We need your help on Monday, October 8 at 8:00 a.m. to help carry boxes of yard sale items from the storage closet into the community room. We also need you on Friday, October 12 at 2:00 p.m. to help pack and carry the left over items to a van that will take it away. It will only take about two hours, but we desperately need your help.

in the CT I community room for folks who want to do

puzzles. We will also have Wii available and Tuesdays and

Thursdays after lunch, residents will have ‘Game Day’ –

bring a board game, grab a deck of cards and enjoy time

with your neighbors. Stay as long as you would like!

Craft and Spa Days with Barbara Kearns Mark your calendars for the following dates: Spa Days: Craft Days: Saturdays from 12-4 Weekdays from 2-4 October 6 and 20 October 25 and 30 Sign up in the office for activities you are interested in. Fire Prevention Week 2018 ----- October 7-13, 2018

P.A.S.S.

Do you know what the acronym PASS stands for? Clearview Terrace provides a fire extinguisher in your apartment and in the community areas. Here are some simple steps using the acronym “PASS” to use your extinguisher: First you have to twist off the plastic tie that holds the pin in place. Then you:

Pull the pin (round, metal loop at top)

Aim the hose

Squeeze top handle and

Sweep (back and forth at the base of the fire)

If the fire is in your trash can, smother it with something to get the fire out.

If the fire is on your stove, aim the fire extinguisher at the range hood and let it deflect the extinguishing material to the fire; do not aim at the stove itself.

Other Safety Tips: Smoke Alarms – Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half; test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button (have a family member do it if you are not able). Cooking – cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries; the leading cause is unattended cooking – stay in your kitchen when preparing food in your oven or on your stove. Heating – heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires during the winter; space heaters are usually the type of heaters that cause the most fires; keep anything that can burn 3 feet from the heating equipment.

Last Month at a Glance

Our September birthday party was celebrated in the CT I community room

with lunch catered by Railside. Twenty residents enjoyed lunch and fellowship.

We celebrated the birthdays of Peggy Sheaffer, Pat Barnhart and Susan Diaz.

The van traveled to the Warehime Myers Mansion for the last of the outdoor

lawn concerts on September 5. Residents enjoyed the sounds of the Gettysburg Big

Band. They enjoyed free treats and ice cream as well. The van traveled back to the

Mansion for a tour on September 19. The seventy minute tour included two floors

of artifacts from both the Shepperd family (Hanover Shoe) as well as the Warehime

family (Hanover Foods). The group then went to Dutch Country for lunch and then

to Snyder’s for a walking tour of the distribution and warehouse areas and visit to

the factory outlet store. The group capped off the day with a stop at the York Street

Treat. A great trip on a beautiful fall-like day.

Yard sale preparations started in September but it is never too late for you to

volunteer. Having more help allows us to rotate workers during the sale, giving

them lunch and bathroom breaks and we can also switch out workers from standing

to sitting jobs. Remember, any time you can give to the yard sale is rewarded to

you in credits and those credits are then able to be used for birthday parties, bus

trips (both van trips and chartered bus trips), etc… Please call the office with

questions about volunteering.

Some Common Sense First Aid Advice

Living in a senior community sometimes presents some

unique situations. Chances are that you will encounter

someone who has a medical emergency. First thing you

need to do is recognize the emergency. Look, listen and

smell for unusual things. For example, your neighbor who

always gets up at the crack of dawn, still has their blinds closed at 9 a.m. Or

maybe you smell the odor of natural gas. Or you hear glass breaking or the

muffled sound of someone calling for help. Or something more obvious; a

neighbor who is lying on the sidewalk!

Follow the three C rules: Check, Call, Care

Check the Scene– first check the scene to make sure it is safe for

you to approach the person. An example of an unsafe scene might

be the person’s dog that is growling and showing their teeth. You

could be bit if you get too close. If the scene is safe, then check the

person for injuries or illness.

Call 911. If the person has a life threatening injury or illness or you

are not sure what to do, call 911. It is common for the injured

person to tell you not to call for help, but you don’t have to have

their permission to call 911. When the emergency personnel arrive

on the scene, they will check the person, care for them and

sometimes recommend a trip to the hospital. The injured or ill

person can refuse to go. Then the ambulance staff will have them

sign a release form.

Care for the Person – If you have first aid or CPR training, you can

care for the person until emergency personnel arrive and take over.

If you don’t know what to do, the 911 operator will give you step-by-

step instructions on how to keep the person safe and comfortable

until help arrives.

Remember your three Cs – Check the scene and victim, Call 911 if

you find life threatening emergency and Care for the victim. You can

do a lot to help someone.

Pet Policy

Please keep your dog or cat on a leash at all times when you and your furry friend are outside. This includes during your walks, while visiting other tenants, potty time and when you are just sitting out front of your apartment.

You must also clean up after your pet, even when your pet is going behind the apartment buildings or along the creek area, no exceptions! These rules are clearly stated in the Pet Policy and Regulations signed at your annual recertification and at the time of move in. Violating these rules makes you in violation of your lease.

Washer & Dryers

Please be mindful of the fact that our washer and dryers cannot handle heavy duty laundry; doing so will damage the machines. These are not commercial washers and dryers. When you have laundry such as heavy blankets, comforters, rugs, etc…please use a laundromat. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Updated List of Tenant Phone Numbers

In the November newsletter, we would like to include a list of tenants, their

apartment number and phone number. If you have changed your phone number

recently, please notify the office of your new number. If you DO NOT want some

or all of this information published in the newsletter, please contact the office before

October 12.

If we did not publish your number in last year’s list, we will not publish it this year

unless you give us permission to do so or if you moved in this year and requested we

keep your number private, we will not publish it unless you give us permission.

Attention Gardeners and those interested in gardening

The Guthrie Memorial Library and the Hanover Garden Club will present “Gardening in Pennsylvania is not for wimps” with guest host George Weigel. The program will be held at the library on Tuesday, Oct. 23 @ 6:30 pm. Weigel is the author of several books including “Pennsylvania Getting Started Garden Guide.”

Maintenance Requests

If you need a repair in your apartment, please contact the office at 717-632-8081. Your request will be handled on the basis of urgency. For example, a clogged toilet is a priority and a broken closet door might have to wait awhile. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT stop Lenny or Darryl or

Kevin and ask them directly to make a repair or inquire as to when they will

get to your job. Call the office with your requests or questions.

Emergency Contact Information

Every year we update each tenant’s emergency contact information. This form is used by Clearview Terrace personnel to contact your family if you would have an emergency or to give to emergency medical personnel if they need to contact your family. Please complete the form found in this newsletter and drop it off at the office as soon as possible. This form has been very helpful so many times this year when tenants became ill and we had to reach a family member. Thank you for helping us to provide better service to you!

Bingo – Bring a Friend Many of our residents enjoy playing bingo that is offered on

Wednesdays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m. in the community room. This is one service that we offer to residents that is also available to your friends and relatives. It cost $1.00 for three cards and free refreshments are served during a brief intermission. No need to sign up, just come to play. It is a good idea to arrive about 15 minutes prior to the start so you have time to get your cards and find a seat. Bingo games will start promptly on the hour

Breaker Boxes

Please remember to keep your breaker box free and clear of objects for easy access. Keeping a flashlight handy in case you need to access your breaker box during a power outage is a good idea . Staff will be looking for easy access to all circuit breakers when doing annual inspections in CT I and II.

Faster Response Time for Ambulance If you become ill or injured in your apartment and need to call 911, please let the EMS dispatcher know if your apartment door is locked. If so they can get a key to your apartment from our KNOX Box. The KNOX Box is situated outside the office and can only be opened by career fire and EMS personnel. This allows for a rapid, non-destructive entrance to your apartment. Letting the 911 dispatcher know that your door is locked will save time. When the ambulance arrives at Clearview Terrace they will first get the key and then respond to your apartment. It will save a lot of time and extra suffering while you wait for the ambulance or fire team to go back to the office to open the box and get our key.

REAL ID in Pennsylvania

Beginning October 1, 2020, Pennsylvanians will need to have a REAL ID-compliant license, identification card or another form of federally-acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to:

Enter a federal facility that requires ID at the door Do I have to get a REAL ID? No, REAL ID is optional for PA residents. You will be able to get either a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, or a standard driver’s license or ID card. REAL IDs will be available to customers that want them starting in spring of 2019. You will not need a REAL ID to drive, vote, access hospitals, visit the post office, access federal courts or apply for or receive federal benefits.

The Shingles Vaccination

Statistics show that 1 in 3 adults 65+ will get shingles if they have had the chicken pox. The shingles vaccine has been shown to reduce the risk of shingles by 51% in adults 60 years of age or older, according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Who Should Get the Shingles Shot?

The vaccine is recommended for patients 60 years or older, regardless of whether they have ever had chickenpox. It is a

single-dose vaccine.

Chair Fitness is Back! Please join us every Friday morning starting in late October at 10:00 AM in the Community Room for Chair ‘Sit and Fit’ workouts. We will start on Friday, October 26.

‘Sit and Fit’ is for everyone. No matter what age you are or what physical condition you are in you can experience the health benefits of these chair exercises.

We have all seen the substitute mail carriers filling in for Donna when she is out. The substitute carriers do not know tenant’s apartment numbers the way Donna does. Please communicate to organizations and magazine publishers your FULL address which should include your apartment number. Even if the organization or mailer you are receiving is “junk” mail, it still needs a FULL address.

A BIG thanks goes out to Phyllis Klinefelter who comes early most bingo days to prepare the room and snacks for both Wednesday and Friday bingo sessions. Many people do not realize the extra time she donates to bingo. Special thanks also to other bingo helpers Marty Wiles, Kitty Parrish, Deb McCrea, Joan and Butch Emig and Hazel Fetterman (caller) who assist with clean up after bingo. Lunches are served Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Community Room at 11:45 a.m. Everyone is invited to attend lunches. It is a wonderful way to enjoy food, meet new tenants, and hear about the upcoming events planned for Clearview Terrace. Call before 2:00 p.m. on the day before lunch is served to reserve a meal. The cost for tenants is $2.50 and is paid when you come to lunch. Remember to plan your schedule carefully. If you reserve a lunch, but cannot attend, you will be charged the full price of $4.50 for the meal. We welcome all tenants to join us for fellowship and a delicious lunch! Please invite a friend or relative to join you for only $5.00.
