Junior League makes a ‘Quick Impact’ with Bike Rodeo at St. Stephens Community House

A number of JLC members, along with St. Stephen’s Community House staff and volunteers, came out on September 29th for a day of bike helmet safety and educa-tion for the Greater Linden com-munity. Dozens of children at-tended this fun event. Each at-tendee received a brand new bike helmet and were able to partici-pate in a variety of bike safety games, from an obstacle course to a slow race (where the last one to the finish line wins). With chil-

dren from toddlers to teenagers alike, the Bike Helmet Rodeo was a meaningful way to make a quick impact!

Months of planning lead up to the Junior League of Columbus’ 59th annual Bargain Box event. Treasure hunting was the order of the day on Saturday, October 6th as hundreds of guests poured into Vets Memorial for the sale. Providing all kinds of gently-used merchandise to the Co-lumbus community at low discount prices, Bargain Box is a tradition for bargain hunters, with some patrons traveling across the country for the event. Donating thousands of vol-unteer hours, Junior League of Co-lumbus members provide and collect all the available merchandise, set-up and then staff the day long sale. Greetings from the President,

I am pleased to report that the Junior League of Columbus continues to be on the move with a very busy first quarter.

The year began with a generous dona-tion from Sustainer Shirle Westwater and her daughter for an exterior make-over to our headquarters, the English House. The historic property now has a yellow-gold base, ivory trim, and is fin-ished with a new door painted “Fabulous Red.” Thanks to Doris Baginski, who organized the grounds clean-up for the English House, and to the hard-working JLC members & families who partici-pated.

In August & September, over 3,000 backpacks were provided to children attending Columbus Public and South-western schools. Laura Lazor, Adopt-a-Backpack for Children Chair, and I ap-peared on a local television show, “Education is Everybody’s Business,” hosted by Tei Street, Educational Direc-tor for the City of Columbus, to talk about the JLC’s ABC project. We cele-brated our 2nd year partnership with “Capital Kids” at Sawyer Community Center where Mayor Michael B. Cole-man, who personally placed a backpack on children attending the event, joined us. Parents were amazed at the quality of supplies and appreciative of the Jun-ior League’s generosity. After listening to the positive feedback, I am proud of our efforts to help children get a good start each school year. The JLC’s IM-PACT is making a difference.

Thank you to Lesli & David Lawrence for hosting the growing Reds, Whites and ABC’s event again this year. Over 100 members and friends enjoyed fellowship and raised funds for our Adopt-a-Backpack for Children (ABC) project.

Members overseeing our newest com-munity initiative, “Quick Impact,” (formerly Mini-Grants), recently hosted a standing room only Requesting Future Partnerships reception for community partners. Three new Quick Impact pro-

jects were just completed with: St. Stephens Community House (“Bicycle Rodeo”), NuLife Bridges Youth Advocacy Center (a “Teen Dating–Violence” semi-nar), and the Godman Guild (Wee Play). What an IMPACT!

The JLC’s Kelton House renewed its partnership with the Girl Scouts, with Brownies attending a special program at the Kelton House and receiving a Kelton House patch upon completion. In addi-tion, the Kelton House has formed a partnership with “Experience Columbus”, and I am told that it is a must-see.

Members are also making an IMPACT through the Reach Out and Read pro-gram with their visits to Children’s Hospi-tal’s Close-to-Home centers to help pro-mote early childhood learning by reading with parents, care-givers and children in the waiting areas.

And, lastly, Bargain Box brought people together for fun and great shopping!

As you can see, eighty-five years later the Junior League of Columbus contin-ues to promote volunteerism, develop women, and IMPACT communities. Join the fun and let’s continue to make an IMPACT in our community during our second quarter!

Thinking About the Future Do you know that the Junior League of Columbus started its Endowment in 1957? Fifty years later there is $148,124 in the Endowment Fund. Why have an Endowment Fund? The purpose is to eventually support the operat-ing expenses of the League so that all fundraising dollars go directly to our pro-jects. While our current annual operating expenses are very trim, they are still about $120,000, so growing our Endowment is a priority. Gifts made to the En-dowment now will have an IMPACT on the community for years to come! An amazing thing happened this past spring during our annual dues collection — actives & sustainers “rounded up” their dues payments and the additional amount went to our Endowment fund. The JLC Endowment received gifts from over 80 JLC members with the total gifts exceeding $3,100. When should you make your gift to the JLC Endowment? Gifts to the Endow-ment can be made at any time. The Endowment can also accept gifts besides cash including appreciated securities, closely held stock, real estate, life insurance and gifts of qualified retirement plans.

Wondering where to send your tax deductible gift? Gifts can be sent to the Junior League of Columbus, 583 Franklin Avenue, Columbus, OH 43215-4715. Or, to Junior League of Columbus Endowment Fund, c/o The Co-lumbus Foundation, 1234 E Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43205-1453. Have questions? Angela Parsons, JLC Active Member and Columbus Foundation Gift Planning Officer manages the JLC Endowment. She can assist with complex gifts or simple questions. - Jennifer Talley, Endowment/Annual Giving Chair

New Partnership Update

As a result of the September Request-ing Future Partner-ships community part-ner reception, the Junior League of Columbus received 29 proposals from community organizations to jointly create a "Quick Impact" project, or advance an existing project, to be held in Spring 2008.

A “Quick Impact” project maximizes volunteer and mone-tary resources, addresses a need within the Columbus community, occurs as a one-time event, and furthers the Junior League of Columbus’ focus on keeping children safe.

If you or a member of your organization would like more information about the Requesting Future Partnerships pro-gram, please contact the Junior League of Columbus at 614-464-2717 or [email protected]. Information will be available in the spring for partnership opportunities in Fall 2008.

Making a positive & lasting IMPACT on the community

The Art of Positive Parenting: Celebrating Spirited Children

- by Sonya Thesing

A few years ago, I was describing to a friend some frustrations I was experiencing with our oldest son. She suggested I read Mary Sheedy Kurcinka’s Raising Your Spirited Child.

My journey to understanding my child, myself and how we communicate began. Ms. Kurcinka elimi-nates labels such as difficult, strong-willed and stub-born and replaces them with spirited. She uses “spirited” because it sounds & feels good, and it celebrates the unique characteristics of children. The Webster’s definition of spirited---lively, creative, keen, eager, full of energy and courage, and having a strong assertive personality---helps us see spir-ited children’s traits as the strengths they can be-come if understood and well guided.

To understand a spirited child, one must understand temperament. For parents of all children, knowl-edge of temperament is a useful skill set for parent-child communication. For parents of spirited chil-dren, understanding a child’s temperament can be a life saving tool for dealing with daily ups and downs.

Who is the spirited child? Simply stated, they are more; more intense, more perceptive, more persis-tent, more sensitive and more cautious during times of change. As adults, we appreciate intensity, per-ception, persistence and sensitivity. Ms. Kurcinka directs readers to celebrate these traits in our chil-dren and gives tips how to communicate with and nurture your spirited child.

My husband and I refer to the chapters on Getting Dressed, Mealtime, and Success in School when our patience is wearing thin and we need reminders about how to communicate with our sons and each other! Our parent group has read portions of Rais-ing Your Spirited Child and another of Kurcinka’s books, Kids, Parents and Power Struggles.

I can now identify the spirited children in our son’s classes, on their soccer teams and among their friends. Instead of rolling my eyes when their exu-berance bubbles over or their questions don’t seem to end, I celebrate the more-ness in their intensity and zest for life!

Sonya Thesing is a JLC sustainer and is co-owner of The Columbus Nanny Agency. She lives in Westerville with her husband David and their two sons, ages 5 and 7.

Thank you to the Junior League of Columbus volunteers who …

• Assisted NuLife Bridges Youth Advocacy Center with its

teen dating violence prevention program for girls.

• Volunteered at the Bicycle Rodeo & Fitness event at St. Stephen’s Community House for children ages 4-10 living in the Linden Area.

• Participated in the support for the Godman Guild Association’s Wee-PLAY (Positive Learning Activities for Youth) program for children of parents who are participatingin GED, literacy, job readiness training, parenting classes and computer workshops.

• Read to children & their caregivers while at Children’s Close to Home Centers through the Reach Out & Read Program.

• Lead tours at the Kelton House Museum for school chil-dren & adult guests of the Museum.

• Organized & planned the community partner reception to identify future JLC quick impact partners.

Together we make an IMPACT in the community!

Honoring Sustainer Dr. JoAnn Rohyans, MD

2008 Spring Gala Sustainer Honoree: Dr. JoAnn Rohyans, MD

The Junior League of Columbus is proud to announce the Junior League of Columbus’ 2008 sustainer honoree - Dr. JoAnn Yampol Rohyans, who will be celebrated at Spring Gala 2008. JoAnn is an amazing woman who has made an impact throughout the State of Ohio, especially Franklin County. Sus-

tainer Roberta Deyo writes: “ I love the Junior League of Columbus. The Junior League wel-comes you and makes you feel at home and gives you the confidence that you can do anything. The Junior League has done that for JoAnn and me. That is where we were trained to volunteer. The Junior League was the springboard for JoAnn to go out and make an IMPACT.” With her high energy and adept time management skills, she juggles many activities at once and does them well. Very conscientious, when JoAnn commits, you know that she will get the job done and then some. JoAnn’s volunteer activities center on helping others in the community. Her hands-on involvement at The New Directions Career Center as Board member, Board President and Volunteer has given many women in the community their lives back. As a pediatrician recognized as a “Best Doctor in America”, Dr. Rohyans has spent countless hours counseling parents and children, championing their rights. JoAnn is gifted and she shares her wisdom and educates children and their families about drug abuse, obesity, and bullying.

JoAnn provides leadership skills along with her training as a physician to Boards of the Speech & Hearing Center, and Madden’s Center for Parkinson's Disease organizations. She was very in-

volved with the Bexley Schools, has been a member of TWIG for over 30 years, and supports numerous other commu-nity organizations and activities. JoAnn gives from the heart...gives without hesitation...gives till the job is complete...gives with love and tenderness...not for recognition but because she loves her community...because she is a humanitarian. Join us in celebrating and honor-ing JoAnn Rohyans at Spring Gala 2008.

JLC Members win Forty under 40 Award!

In September, JLC members Sonya Thesing & Deb Cummings received Columbus Business First’s Forty under 40 award for their professional drive & community activities. Congratulations to them both! Sonya Thesing, is the founder, director & co-owner of the Columbus Nanny Agency (www.columbusnannies.com) where she and her business partner have created a full-service nanny agency to help families find the perfect fit for their childcare needs. Prior to its founding, Sonya was a partner in Wayne Products, Inc. a company she and her brother operated to carry on their family golf business. Sonya’s JLC leadership is wide-ranging from leading the JLC’s project with the Center for Child and Family Advocacy, to developing a collaboration between the JLC and Action for Children to support The Art of Positive Parenting (TAPP) classes for underserved parents. She served on the JLC Board of Directors for two years where she worked to shape the long-range strategic plan for the JLC. As a sustainer, Sonya now gives her t ime as a Catechist in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd religious formation program, and is involved in children’s ministries at her church. In June, Sonya received the JLC’s President’s Award honoring her outstanding support of and contributions to the JLC. Deb Cummings has invested much of her professional life in strategic planning and business management, including her current work at Battelle Memorial Institute. While balancing a successful career, Deb obtained her M.B.A. at Ohio State, and has since completed her Project Management Professional Certification. In her profession, she has made significant improvements to economic impact analyses, program assessments, best practice methodology, and science & technology policy. In addition to all of Deb’s high profile professional work, she spent over 200 hours volunteering for the JLC in the last year alone! She joined the JLC in 1999, has served as the Kelton House Team V.P., worked on the Membership Ad Hoc Committee to help streamline our membership processes and is currently on the Board of Directors for her fourth term as Treasurer of the JLC. Last year, Deb received the JLC’s President Award for her outstanding support of and contribu-tions to the JLC.
