Safely & Naturally Improve Your Vision & Eye Health Using Simple Techniques At Home

Eye care industries (eye wear, contacts, eye surgeries), and their sub-industries (contact lens solution, implantable lenses), are constantly growing… Think about how many people you personally know that need some type of corrective lenses. I’m willing to bet it’s more than just a few. In fact, it’s probably MOST of the people you know! While prescription lenses make life easier and are a great advance in technology, they’re often not the best things for your eye’s function and health. Let’s explore how the eye works and why you should look to naturally improve your vision rather than finding out from your optometrist or ophthalmologist - year after year - that your eyes are getting even worse because of your prescription lens usage.

ANATOMY OF THE EYE The eye is a complex organ that must be treated with care. Each eye is only about an inch in diameter, but they do so much that you’d be lost without them should they ever stop functioning.

We people depend on our sense of sight more than any other of our five senses. It’s our most well-developed sense as a species, and we use it constantly throughout the day. Just try to imagine not being able to see for an hour. Really, try to imagine what it would be like! Not a nice thought, huh? You probably wouldn’t be able to get anything done without extreme frustration, so don’t take your eyesight for granted.

It’s unnecessary (and downright boring) to discuss every single part of the eye, because as you can see

from the image above, there are a LOT, but let’s go over some of the most important ones as they relate to vision Cornea: The frontal portion of the eye’s clear covering. The cornea transmits light and focuses it. Retina: The nerve layer lining the back of the eye which senses light and sends impulses to the brain, which will then interpret what you’re seeing. Lens: The lens is found in the front of the eye and focuses light rays onto the retina, which is located at the back of the eye Optic nerve: The nerve that connects the eye to the brain, allowing for impulses formed by the retina to reach the brain where it will be turned into images.

20/20 VISION EXPLANATION Ever been to an eye doctor and had to look at a chart hanging on the wall? You know, the one with the big “E” at the top and progressively smaller letters as you look further down? This is either a Snellen chart (named after Dr. Hermann Snellen in the 1860s) or a close variation of a Snellen chart. It’s used to measure visual acuity (clearness of vision).

Page 5: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

While it’s important to measure visual acuity, this chart doesn’t account for other eye problems that are a little less common, such as problems with depth perception, peripheral vision, or contrast perception. Other tests and tools are needed to measure these. During an eye exam, you’re usually placed 20 feet away from the Snellen chart, but your doctor may use mirrors for this same effect if their rooms aren’t big enough to place you at the appropriate distance. Or they may place you at a different distance like ten feet and adjust their readings accordingly. The reason for placing you at the standard twenty feet is because it’s a distance that most people with normal vision would be able to read most of the letters on the chart. Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have one eye see worse than the other), they each need to be tested individually. If you can read the top letter and the top letter only (which is usually an E), your vision would be 20/200, meaning you can see at 20 feet with the clarity a person with normal vision would be able to see at 200 feet. This is considered legally blind, although that title can be taken away if your eye doctor is able to correct it with glasses, contacts, or surgery.

Page 6: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

Speaking of legal issues, those of you who drive will need to have vision that is at least 20/40, meaning you can see at 20 feet what someone with normal vision would be able to see at 40 feet. This is for everyone’s safety, including yours, so make sure you correct your vision, at the very least, while driving. Snellen charts aren’t the only option eye doctors can use. Alternatives include the tumbling E chart (which contains only the letter E facing in different directions for small children) and the Jaeger chart (containing very small text on a card that is placed significantly closer to you than a Snellen chart). Your doctor will decide which charts are appropriate to test you with, as well as perform other tests to give you a complete eye exam. Should they find you have any problems with your eye health and eyesight, they’ll discuss treatment options with you.

PRESCRIPTIONS Prescriptions for vision correcting lenses can only be written by eyewear prescribers like ophthalmologists and optometrists. Prescriptions are given after an eye exam and consultation. Chances are you’ve received and probably even fulfilled an eyeglass or contact lens

Page 7: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

prescription before, but never fully understood how to read it. Most eye prescriptions are written for refractive errors. They occur when your eye doesn’t focus light correctly, leading to vision problems like myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness). Astigmatism (an abnormally shaped cornea) is another common problem that falls under the category of being a refractive error, but it’s a cylindrical problem, whereas myopia and hyperopia are spherical problems. OS (oculus sinister) is a latin abbreviation used on eye prescriptions to refer to your left eye. OD (oculus dextrus) would be the right eye. The numbers found under the OS and OD sphere (S) headers tell you about how good or bad your vision is. The closer your numbers are to zero, the better your eyes are. The further away from zero your numbers are (whether they’re plus or minus), the worse your vision is.

Page 8: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

You’ll notice that near sighted people will have a minus prescription while far sighted people have a plus prescription. It’s important that you answer questions and requests correctly so that your doctor is able to get accurate answers. Getting a prescription that’s too strong can cause problems like nausea, headaches or dizziness. Getting a prescription that’s too low is a much better alternative, but you still want to make sure you can see well enough to drive if that’s something you do. If you do end up with a prescription that you’re not happy or comfortable with, you wouldn’t be the first person in history to do so. In fact, it’s estimated that at least 2% of people go back to the eye doctor very soon after appointments complaining of not being prescribed correctly.

SHOULD YOU USE GLASSES OR CONTACTS?

Most people go ahead and follow their doctors orders, wearing the prescription the doctor supplied them with and feeling fine until the next visit, where they usually learn that their vision has worsened.

Page 9: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

Some people do the complete opposite, refusing to wear corrective lenses of any kind for any length of time. Others still, wear lenses when necessary (think driving) and go without the rest of the time. What you choose to do is ultimately up to you, but it’s important that you stay safe whatever your choice ends up being. It makes no sense to try and improve your vision by adjusting to life without glasses if you’re going to injure yourself or someone else. Common sense should always come before alternative treatments for vision correction, and alternative treatments of any kind. That being said, there are some very real reasons you might want to avoid contacts and glasses when it’s safe to do so. Corrective lenses are prescribed to you to correct your vision at a certain distance. This distance is often 20 feet. Your eye doctor fits you with a prescription that gives you perfect vision while you’re looking at a Snellen chart 20 feet away. The prescription given to you will change the way light focuses in your eye and it will do it in the same way, every moment that you’re using them.

Page 10: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

This means it will change the way light focuses in your eye even when you’re looking at something closer than 20 feet or farther than 20 feet. Your prescription doesn’t change even though the distance of objects you’re looking at will change all the time. Prescriptions don’t give you perfect vision while you’re wearing it – it’s important to understand this. They give you better vision when you’re looking at something 20 feet away, or whatever the distance was when your eye doctor was choosing your prescription strength. For a near sighted person, anytime you look at something closer than 20 feet using your glasses or contacts, you’re causing unnecessary eye strain because of how the prescription is changing the way light focuses in your eye. The same is true for a far sighted person when they look at objects more than 20 feet away. Another reason not to wear glasses or contacts is because your prescription is chosen under worst case scenarios. Think about it, they check your vision in the dark at a distance of 20 feet. Testing you in the dark and choosing a prescription based on your vision in the dark means that when you wear your glasses or contacts in lighted environments (which is most of the time), your prescription automatically becomes too strong.

Page 11: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

This is just like what we discussed for nearsighted people looking at objects closer than 20 feet or far sighted people looking at objects further than 20 feet. Your prescription becomes too strong in all these cases. Prescription lenses, while helpful, often harm the health of your eyes because they don’t adjust at all. They’re static and that will prevent your eyes from improving if you wear your prescription a lot. As mentioned, you can refuse to listen to your doctor, but it’s probably a better idea to wear your corrective lenses sparingly and use the techniques described below to encourage as much improvement as possible.

IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE TO CORRECT YOUR VISION?

There have been accounts of people miraculously correcting their vision to a perfect state, but there could have been others factors involved and who’s to say whether their accounts are credible or not? Not trying to burst your bubble here… It’s just important that we be realistic!

Page 12: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

That being said, it’s definitely possible to improve your vision naturally. In some cases the changes can even be drastic! With enough time and dedication, it can’t be denied that improving to the point of perfect or near perfect vision is a possibility. Bear in mind that results will come slowly. There are no overnight successes when it comes to vision improvement. You will have to work at it. There will be times you’d rather be doing something else. However, you’ll probably end up agreeing that it’s worth the effort and dedication to achieve the results that are possible. Now let’s discuss how to go about natural vision improvement!

THE BATES METHOD William Bates is a famous eye doctor who long ago attributed most problems with poor eyesight to eyestrain. He felt that glasses only made things worse and were necessary under no circumstances. He came out with a book and magazine detailing his method for improving eyesight. Although many people throughout history have seen improvements in their vision as a result of following his methods, he was eventually disbarred from the American Optometric

Page 13: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

Association. The reason for this is because his methods were unable to be objectively proven to improve eyesight. Let’s be honest – his methods weren’t perfect. In fact, they were far from it. Science has debunked his theory that eyes change their shape to maintain focus. There are, however, some helpful exercises taught by Bates that can help to improve eye health and vision. Hey, he didn’t get EVERYTHING wrong! One of the best exercises he taught was called palming. To palm for eye health and vision improvement, simply close your eyes and place your palms over your eyes in a way that no pressure is applied to your eyeballs and no light (or as little light as possible) is let in. You do this by slightly cupping your hands and placing your right hand over your right eye, and your left hand over your left eye. Your fingers may interlace or overlap. Just find a way to do it that’s comfortable for you. Your eyes will be in complete darkness, allowing for absolute and complete relaxation of your eyes. Do it for long enough and you’ll find that it can also relax your mind. In fact, many people like to lay down and palm before going to bed. It’s very soothing and can be a great stress reliever.

Page 14: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

You’ll want to palm at least once a day. A few times a day is even better. Twenty or more times a day would be ideal, but don’t pressure yourself to meet any quotas. Simply do it when you remember and you will reap the benefits. You can continue your palming session for a long as you’d like. If you’re only comfortable starting out with a few minutes each time, do that! Don’t push yourself or turn this exercise into a chore. As time goes on, you may find that you can increase the length of time you’re able to do it, and find that you even enjoy doing it. Your eyes get a much needed rest and you’ll probably notice that they feel much better. It may seem like a weird exercise for the purpose of vision improvement, but the main thing palming accomplishes is reducing eye strain and relaxing the eye, which can often help with vision improvement. This is especially true if done as a long term exercise, rather than a one-off deal.

UNDER-PRESCRIBING METHOD Under-prescribing glasses or contact lenses is one of the simplest ways to improve your vision or prevent it from becoming worse. It’s simply a matter of finding a

Page 15: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

doctor that’s willing to work with you on this. Other than finding the right doctor and visiting with him, this method requires no work at all on your part. When you go in for your check up, simply ask your doctor if they would be willing to provide you with a weaker prescription. You can explain that it’s for vision improvement, or if you’d rather not deal with the conversation that might result from that, tell them it’s because strong prescriptions give you headaches. It’s likely that you’ll be put through a standard eye exam, and your doctor will check how well you like different lens strengths that he can offer you. You’ll then test out your chosen prescription and report back to your doctor if you feel anything needs to be changed. Over time, it’s likely that your eyes will “adjust down” to your new prescription. You probably won’t even notice it happening. You’ll just notice that at your next check up, your doctor will make a surprised noise and inform you that your vision got better. At that time you’ll get a new, even weaker prescription to allow your eyes even more room to improve. You may need to go in for checkups more often if you find that your eyes adjust down to your new prescription quickly. Although a bit of an inconvenience,

Page 16: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

it’s definitely worth it knowing that your eyes are benefitting as a result.

END BAD HABITS One of the things that may have caused your vision to worsen in the first place may have been bad habits. Staring is a bad habit that most of us are guilty of. At work we often stare at computer screens or whatever it is we’re working on. When we come home from work, we then stare at TVs or phone screens. Even while doing things not involving a screen at all, we may still end up staring. Think about how your eyes behave when you’re cooking dinner, cleaning up around the house or driving. It’s helpful to move your eyes around as often as you remember to. I’m not saying to do things like look all around while you’re driving. Sure, keep your eyes on the road most of the time, but take very short glances off into the distance, maybe to cars a mile or more ahead of you. Eye movement is important, and eye movement as a result of switching your gaze between near and far objects is even more important.

Page 17: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

The next time you get on the computer, set a timer for 5 minutes and when it goes off, let your eyes take a break from the screen by looking at the farthest object you can see for a few seconds. Then, set the timer for 5 minutes again and resume your computer usage. Using a timer will get you into the habit of looking far away. Eventually, you won’t need the timer and it will be second nature to look at objects of varying distances. Another bad habit many people have is forgetting to blink. This often goes along with staring. This bad habit is horrible for eye health because it leads to strain (which may worsen vision in some people) and also makes your eyes dry. Ending bad eye habits can be summed up as forcing your eyes to be more active. Use them more! Put them to good use!

CONCLUSION It’s possible, in many cases, to improve the health of your eyes and correct your vision over time. Your eyes will thank you, and your eye doctor will probably wonder how you did it.

Page 18: Clearer Eyesight Regained€¦ · Your eye doctor will have you cover one eye at a time to read the letters off. Since your eyes aren’t the same (it’s perfectly possible to have

The key is to be consistent about the positive changes you’re making. Don’t start a good habit that might have an amazing effect on your vision and then give up on it before it has time to work. Keep working at it and appreciate the little improvements you make. Even mild improvements are improvements to be thankful for. Keep at it, and those minor improvements can grow into something much bigger.
