In July, at 4354km, I noticed both front tyres were wearing excessively on the outer edges. A local tyre retailer checked the alignment and told me it was within speci- fication, but said the front tyres were wearing exces- sively, that there must be something wrong with the vehicle, and to take it back to a dealership. The dealer checked the alignment and confirmed that it was with- in specs and that I should try that. A short time later I noticed it had a slight pull to the left. I took it back in August for the alignment to be checked and rectified. I was informed that three alignments were done with VW’s involvement. I was asked to try that and the settings were all within spec. In November I took it back to the same dealer for the same problem, only this time both front tyres had worn excessively on the outer edges and were close to unroadworthy. Both the rear tyres are wearing excessively on the outer edges as well after 8631km. I was informed again all settings are with- in specs and the dealer sug- gested I contact VW cus- tomer service, and I was given the number. I did, and received a call from them to discuss the prob- lem. The explanation I was given was that ‘‘it is a heavy car with big rims and low-profile tyres and the settings were as per specs, so there is nothing VW could do’’. After pay- ing in excess of $120,000 I cannot accept I have to rep- lace a set of tyres before its first service. I am a 64-year-old gent who takes pride in his vehicle and it is only driven on suburban roads and freeways. I hope you can help me or lead me in the right direction. Des Brown, email. A: The guy from VW is cor- rect, it is a big, heavy and powerful vehicle set up to handle like a sports car with big wheels and low-profile tyres, and aggressive wheel alignment. I have no doubt that the alignment has been checked and found to be with- in specification. You could perhaps go to an independent suspension specialist and have them attempt to adjust the alignment to give you bet- ter tyre life. You could buy smaller wheels and higher profile tyres, which are likely to improve your tyre life. Q: My 2009 Toyota Kluger makes a whining sound like a jet taking off when accelerating around 60km/h and 100km/h and stops or is not as noticeable when my foot lifts off. My service provider said the transmission needs to be taken out and sent away for testing on parts and could cost $5000. Other fo- rums state it happens a lot but usually under war- ranty. It has always been serviced since new. Should Toyota or the dealership help if this is the problem? Wayne, Hervey Bay, Qld. A: Take it to another mech- anic who knows Toyotas and have it assessed. I have seen reports of a whining noise coming from the front differ- ential and transfer case. I doubt that it is the automatic transmission itself. Q: I recently read in your column about someone who had problems with creaking noises from the rear of their Subaru For- ester. I had similar noises in my 2007 model a few years ago, which my help- ful local dealer fixed by closing the cargo blind. I felt a bit silly but was re- lieved that there was no ex- pensive repair bill. Bill Dickenson, Adelaide, SA. A: It’s always a good idea to check for a simple answer be- fore assuming its going to be an expensive fix. Can save red faces all round.
