Larger volumes of sand, dirt, harder organic material Material such as large twigs, engineered wood fibre and nuts, must be removed by either sweeping or blowing and then using an industrial vacuum cleaner to dislodge and remove materials from under the mat. CLEANING & MAINTAINING

Stains or heavily soiled areas should be cleaned with methyl

ethyl ketone (MEK) fluid and a cloth or scrubbing brush.

Being a specifically formulated cleaner, MEK may be used

sparingly to remove stubborn deposits and stains. Note

all safety precautions that come with this fluid should

be adhered to.

Leaves and other soft organic debris Debris on the surface can be swept or blown off the

playground. Debris fallen through the surface will, over

the course of time, decay and/or wash with rain to the

perimeter of the playground. This process can be sped up

by power washing or vacuuming the debris up with an

industrial vacuum cleaner.

Like all other outdoor surfaces exposed to the weather and high foot traffic, Play Matta™ products require periodic cleaning and maintenance. Regular cleaning will prevent the build-up of dirt and grime ensuring the surfacing performs and looks at its very best. Follow the tips below to get the most out of your Play Matta™ playground.

Helpful Tips

Water blasting Step one: Vacuum thick deposits of sand, soil or

debris that can be seen through the holes in the tiles

using an industrial outdoor vacuum cleaner.

Step two: Systematically work your way across the areas to be cleaned. It is

recommended that a water blaster with a rotary cleaning head is used as it

will give a more uniform finish.

Step three: When finished water blasting, sweep the entire surface with a

stiff yard broom as the water blaster will bring soil and debris to the surface.

Larger volumes of sand, dirt, harder organic material Material such as large twigs, engineered wood fibre and

nuts, must be removed by either sweeping or blowing

and then using an industrial vacuum cleaner to dislodge

and remove materials from under the mat. Failure to do

this may result in the surface mats being strained,

especially around joins.

Step one: Scrub Play Matta™ with a stiff broom and bucket of water containing commercial

strength floor cleaner.

Step two: Spray the surface with an outdoor mould removing cleaner. Read and follow the

product instructions. While products vary, it is usually recommended that it be applied and

left for as long as possible before scrubbing and washing off.

Step three: If surfacing requires further cleaning, an abrasive cleaner such as “Ajax” may be

used in conjunction with hand scrubbing.

CLEANING EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST

Water blaster (preferably petrol)Minimum 2000 psi

Petrol – additional petrol must be safely stored at all times.

Water supply – if not available on site a water tank will be required.

Rotary scrubbing head – to fit water blaster

Industrial wet and dry vacuum cleaner – with a minimum 2000 watt motor with strong sucking action.

Generator – where site power is unavailable.

Outdoor mould removing type cleaner (if required) – ensure sufficient coverage for area – typical coverage is 1 litre = 5m2, but some areas may require a greater concentration. Read instructions.

Methyl ethyl ketone – this is a highly flammable liquid, take care with storage and transport.

Abrasive cleaner (if required)

Brooms – stiff yard broom for removal of debris from surface / scrubbing brush for tough stains.

Leaf blower – for removal of debris from surface

Garden hose – ensure sufficient length to enable cleaning at furthest point from water source.

Garden hose attachments – 2 sets. Required to ensure minimum leakage at connection points.

Hand tools – pliers, spanners – for hose attachment fitting / removal; screw driver, knife – for removal of weeds from between tiles and weed matting; suitable “hook” tool for lifting tiles to shake out debris.

Cleaning cloths

Mesh fencing, electrical cable ties and waratahs to fence off the area if necessary.

Pressure sprayer – for spraying Wet and Forget / 30 Second Spray and Walk Away onto surface.

ONGOING MONITORING

Pins working loose• Pins fixed to lumber – hammer back into place being

careful not to drive the pins too hard.

• Pins fixed to concrete – the best course of action is to

call your Play Matta™ representative to correct the

problem.

U section edging liftingClean area and flush with water, dry and re-glue with

Matta Fix Glue or call your Play Matta™ representative.

M1 edge piecesClimatic conditions can cause some shrinkage of M1 and

M2 edge pieces, creating gaps between sections. These

gaps can easily be remedied with M1 or M2 wedge inserts

or a fully synthetic gap filler. You should contact you Play

Matta™ representative to have any gaps fixed.

Mats “letting go” and seams splittingThe cause of this is most likely to be faulty installation.

Call your Play Matta™ representative at the first sign of

a problem as failure to remedy this at an early stage can

result in compounding problems.

Playgound surface subsidingThe most likely cause is abnormal water flow over the

area or inadequate preparation of the base. Contact your

Play Matta™ representative.

Vandalism• Graffiti – remove using the appropriate graffiti

remover which can be purchased from your local

retail outlet.

• Cut and damaged mats – mats can be replaced

by popping the damaged mat and gluing in a

replacement.

• Arson – unless a substantial fire has been started it

is likely that the surface will be only scorched and

the shock pads undamaged. Remove and replace

scorched mats as covered in the section on cut mats

above.
