Biographies

Montana Koenig, Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, PC Montana is an associate in the Kansas City office of Ogletree Deakins. Montana graduated from Mizzou Law in 2015. She then served a clerkship with Judge Youngs of Jackson County before practicing two years in employment discrimination and insurance defense at a Kansas City area firm. She has interned for the Honorable Brian Wimes and the Honorable Beth Phillips of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, and she has clerked for several personal injury firms in Columbia, Missouri. She is admitted to practice in Missouri and Kansas state and federal courts. In addition to workplace investigations, she has given CLE presentations on cyber security, e-discovery, emotional support animal laws, and “fake news.” She was the 2018 recipient of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association Young Lawyers Section President’s Award.

Mark Emison, Langdon & Emison, LLC Mark is a partner at Langdon & Emison. Mark devotes his practice to representing clients and families who have suffered a catastrophic injury or death. He serves clients across the country in cases involving defective products, trucking accidents, road construction defects, propane explosions, and wrongful death. Mark has also published articles in both national and state legal publications. Mark graduated from the University of Chicago Law School. Prior to joining Langdon & Emison, Mark completed a clerkship with the Honorable William Ray Price, the Chief Justice of the Missouri Supreme Court at the time. Mark serves on multiple boards of legal organizations, including the Midwest Innocence Project, the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association’s Young Lawyer’s Section.

Maureen Lester, Shepherd Elder Law Group, LLC Maureen Lester is an Elder Law and Estate Planning attorney with Shepherd Elder Law Group, LLC. Maureen graduated from the University of Missouri in 2009 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. After working in the insurance industry, she entered UMKC School of Law and graduated in 2014. While in law school, Maureen witnessed the life and legal challenges that her grandparents faced as they were aging. This experience ignited her interest in elder law and helping seniors navigate the roads which they must travel. Maureen is a member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) and serves on the Young and Transitioning Attorneys Steering Committee. She is on the Board of Directors for the Missouri Chapter of NAELA, an elected position, and also serves as the Chair of the group’s Education Committee. Maureen is a member of the Kansas Chapter of NAELA and Johnson County Bar Association. She is a member and Vice Chair of the Probate & Estate Planning Committee for the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. Maureen is licensed in both Kansas and Missouri. In her free time, Maureen volunteers as a mentor at Amethyst Place, a local women’s shelter. Maureen is an avid runner and enjoys being outdoors with her faithful companion, Scout, a Beagle mix.

Phil Buckley, Buckley Engineering, LLC Phil Buckley is a Mechanical Engineer in Kansas City with background in hundreds of projects that include design of machines, products and processes for a large number of companies. He is well versed in support of legal case analysis having served as an expert witness in many cases. He has investigative, writing, presentation skills and has provided written reports, depositions and testified at trial in support of both defendants and plaintiffs.

Jeffrey McCarther, United States Attorney's Office, Western District of Missouri

Jeff McCarther is an Assistant United States Attorney in the Violent Crimes & Drug Trafficking Unit with the United States Attorney’s Office – Western District of Missouri. Jeff primarily focuses his practice on prosecuting violent crimes, firearms violations, and violations of the Controlled Substances Act. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Jeff was the White-Collar Prosecutor at the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, prosecuting various crimes related to financial fraud. Before becoming a prosecutor, Jeff spent over four years with the law firm of Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP in Kansas City, Missouri. At SHB, Jeff was an associate in the Pharmaceutical & Medical Device Litigation Division with a focus on defending pharmaceutical companies engaged in product liability litigation in state and federal courts across the country. Jeff joined SHB in 2009 after graduating from the University of Missouri School of Law where he was inducted into the Order of Barristers and served as editor of the Missouri Law Review.

Jeff dedicates much of his free time to Kansas City civic and charitable organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City. Jeff is a lifelong Kansas Citian, with the exception of his three years in law school and four years at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Katherine Myers, Edelman, Liesen & Myers Katherine Myers is a founding partner of Edelman, Liesen & Myers L.L.P. Ms. Myers opened her firm alongside two classmates in the fall of 2012, directly after being sworn into the Missouri Bar. She focuses her practice on civil rights and employment litigation. Ms. Myers has represented hundreds of clients in a variety of employment-related claims, including claims of discrimination due to race, sex, national origin, pregnancy, age, sexual harassment, and disability. She has also litigated numerous claims involving employment contract disputes, non-competition agreements, whistleblowing and other public policy protections, as well as wage and hour and other pay disputes. She is committed to protecting individuals from injustice and discrimination, and believes strongly in obtaining full and fair resolution of her clients’ claims, whether that be through settlement or through letting the jury decide.

Allison Kort, Kort Law Firm, LLC Allison began her legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Judith M. Barzilay on the United States Court of International Trade, and then worked in white collar criminal defense as an associate in the New York office of Holland & Knight, LLP. Beginning in 2006, Allison worked in the law school setting, and taught lawyering skills, writing for federal litigation, appellate advocacy, and First Amendment law as a law professor at Duke University School of Law, North Carolina Central University School of Law, Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, and the University of Missouri, Kansas City. As a lawyering skills professor, she focused much of her research on issues of equal protection, education, and civil rights. Allison currently practices in complex trial and appellate litigation in Kansas and Missouri. As a freelance appellate attorney, she is frequently employed by trial lawyers requiring an experienced appellate attorney. She writes appellate briefs and argues before various courts of appeal. She also represents individuals in family law cases, including divorce and child custody proceedings.

Matthew Dameron, Williams Dirks Dameron LLC Matt is an equity partner at Williams Dirks Dameron. Matt’s practice focuses on representing businesses, individuals, and classes in complex litigation. Matt’s work includes class actions, individual cases, and commercial disputes. Matt earned his law and undergraduate degrees from the University of Missouri. In law school, he served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Dispute Resolution. Matt previously clerked for the Honorable Nanette K. Laughrey, United States District Judge for the Western District of Missouri. Before law school, Matt served as the Campaign Coordinator for Congressman Ike Skelton. He is a native of Sedalia, Missouri.

Brennan Delaney, Langdon & Emison, LLC As a former law clerk of both a trial judge and an appellate judge, Brennan spent countless hours in the courtroom, which have given him a unique understanding of both trial practice and the appellate process. Brennan now utilizes this knowledge in his work as an attorney at Langdon and Emison, where he practices law in a variety of areas such as product liability, medical malpractice, premises liability, and dram shop liability.
