San Diego residents have received theloud and clear message that water usagemust be reduced immediately. Sincelandscaping accounts for the majority ofresidential water use, it makes sense tolook closely at alternatives. Redesigningareas of our landscapes with water thriftyplants and shifting our mindset from thatdesired emerald green lawn are clear. How to reduce landscape waterconsumption and convert existinglandscapes is less clear. Many of ourclients initially expressed concern aboutlosing their investment in trees andshrubs. Here are a few tips to help youcomply with the water restrictions whilealso protecting clients’ trees and shrubs:1. Justify the lawn square footage. If your
client uses the lawn for play, keep it;otherwise, remove it and replace with adrought tolerant variety of grass such asNative Bluegrass or UC VerdeBuffalograss. When established, thesevarieties of lawn can use up to 75%less water than a standard Fescue lawn. You may choose to eliminate theFescue lawn altogether and enjoy thesoft yellow grasses blowing in thebreeze.
2. Aerate your lawn and top dress withorganic matter (compost) to help retainmoisture.
3. Water with shorter run times and usemultiple start times. For instance, runyour spray heads for 2-5 minutes. Waitan hour and then run it again for 2-5minutes and repeat for a final third orfourth run. Multiple short run times arebetter than one longer run time becauseit reduces runoff and allows the waterto soak in deeply. This establishes ahealthier, more vigorous root system.
4. Protect mature trees by reducing shrubsand/or groundcover under their canopy. This will reduce the competition formoisture to tree roots. Additionally, mulch under the canopy and waterdeeply once a week or less.
5. Thin the mature tree canopy to reduceits water need. Instead of “hat racking”the tree, lace it to strengthen the branchstructure and to keep the tree’s naturalform.
In addition to reducing water usage andlowering monthly water bills, a stylechange is upon us in our landscape colorpalette. Butter yellow, olive green, softlavender, and magenta now complementour homes. Ultra green and tightlymanicured lawns are being replaced withnatural flowing meadows.

Volunteers who pick fruit to feed thehungry have an urgent need for sites toglean spare fruit from backyard gardensand farms in order to continue to supplychurches and food pantries that distributethe produce.
“Usually at this time of year, we havesix or eight donors scheduled where wecan pick, but currently we have onlyone,” said Elaine Hiel, the SeniorGleaners volunteer who coordinatespicking. “Maybe people who havedonated in the past have cut backwatering or had less productive crops dueto the drought,” Hiel said. “Weparticularly can use oranges and lemons,”she added.
Hiel noted that donating saves thehomeowner the work of picking anddisposing of extra fruit. Donors receive areceipt for tax deduction purposes. Toschedule a crew of Gleaners, contact Hielat 619-463-6356 or e-mail: [email protected](put Sr. Gleaner in the subject line).
Since 1992, Senior Gleaners volunteersaged 55 or more have gleaned tons ofproduce throughout the county. Theycurrently supply more than a dozen localagencies at no cost. Besides gleaningproduce, the group daily collects damagedor outdated products donated by grocersand food services.
CLCA members who are willing tohelp contact property owners may request
a quantity of half-page flyers to leave withprospective donors. Pool serviceprofessionals have done this in the pastwith great results. To order flyers, send ane-mail to Gleaner volunteer Monte Turner:[email protected].
According to the San Diego Hunger
Coalition, nearly 500,000 county residentsdo not have access at all times to enoughfood for an active, healthy life. "Ourrecipient organizations particularlyappreciate our donations of fresh, localproduce, so they can promote goodnutrition," Hiel said.
Besides donations of produce andgrocery items, the organization needsvolunteers to assist with picking andcollection as well as handleadministrative tasks. The Senior Gleanersof San Diego County is a certified non-profit organization affiliated with the SanDiego County Office of Aging andIndependent Services.
