Clay ShirkyTED Talk: How The Internet Will (one day) Transform Government

Shirky starts off his presentation with the story of Martha Payne. Martha was a young student from England who started an online blog about her daily school lunches. The school found out and censored her from doing so.Marthas town rebelled against the town and the school reversed their decision to censor her.Shirky used this story to ask why its rare that citizens rarely stand up to their own governments policies.By opening with this story, Shirky drew upon the audiences emotion to capture them into his presentation. The Introduction

Although Shirky spent a good 10 minutes during the middle of his speech discussing what would normally be a boring topic to most people, he made sure to add in comedic value every minute or two to sort of "break the ice" and make sure the audience was still with him.Shirky also utilized a slide show to show what he was talking about.Maintaining Engagement

Personally, I would rate Shirkys dynamism a 4 out of 5.His speech articulation was great, he used eye contact, body language, and was very knowledgeable regarding the content he was presenting.I didnt give him a perfect score because I thought that he could have engaged the audience a bit more by asking them questions.Dynamism

Shirky utilized a couple of Garr Reynolds presentation techniques by using slides as humorous punctuation and by leaving the audience feeling smarter. He also utilized Nancy Durates presentation techniques by spreading ideas, moving people, and helping them see what he was saying.Presentation Techniques

I learned from Shirky that even though the meat of the content you are delivering may not be the most interesting subject to your audience, it is sometimes necessary to make a correlation between the boring subject matter to the overall speech to clarify its relevancy. Delivery

Both Shirky and Sir Ken Robinson used great eye contact and body language.I enjoyed Shirkys presentation a bit more than Sir Kens due to the fact that Shirky used visual aides and spoke at a much slower and easier to understand tone.Shirky vs. Sir Ken Robinson

Use visual aides whenever possible.Speak slowly and accurately.Try to use comedy whenever possible to keep your audience actively engaged.Ask your audience questions.Tips For Classmates
