DefinitionClassifying is the process of grouping concepts or things into definable categories on the basis of chosen attributes. Classifying things differently can influence perceptions and behaviour (Marzano & Pickering, 1997).

DefinitionSystems analysis is the process of analysing the parts of a system and the manner in which they interact (Marzano & Pickering, 1997).

The Frangenheim College (situated in Bundaberg Qld) has 20 (twenty) Year 4 (four)learners in the class. They have completed a number of lessons in which they have previously acquired and integrated the following declarative and procedural knowledge.

Setting the Scene

This science unit is titled the Life cycle of Plants????? Can we think of a catchy title??? Great Garden Grumble. Grub. Grow, Gruel. ????

Students know that . Germination is the beginning of the seed life cycle. Roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruit have a specific purpose in life. . Plants have a reproductive process. . The importance of prediction, reasoning, observation and evaluation of an investigation.

. Plants need different types of energy to grow and survive. . Energy is gained from sun, soil and water. . Plants are important for a healthy environment and for living things.

Declarative Knowledge

Students have had previous experience with the classifying process and they have been exposed to the following classifying strategies for extending and refining their knowledge in a number of previously studied areas. 1. 5. This year 4 class have had a range of teaching methods throughout their schooling as well as part of this unit including teacher – structured and student-structured tasks.

Link to Summative Task The summative task for this unit is the creation and sowing of a genuine vegetable and herb garden. The fruits of the garden are to be harvested regularly by the students for use by the school tuckshop. The convenors of the tuckshop have given the students a list of herbs and vegetables they would use and the students have chosen 16 different herbs and vegetables to sow in their garden. Throughout the unit the students learn about
