After many years, the Boston Bar/North Bend Food Bank is going to be independent of

Hope Community Services. The reason for this is thanks to the generosity of our do-

nors, we have found it less and less necessary to draw on Hope’s resources. Which is

how it should be; we should be able to take care of our own; and we are doing just that.

This means that every cent that you donate to our food bank—stays in our community.

It also means that we are now 100% responsible for our neediest people and families.

I will continue to work diligently to find sources of funding that will help with the food

bank as well as other sources of funding for our community.

If you are reading this and are a current food bank client, please know that we will do

our best to supply your needs, in return we trust that you will continue to use the food

bank responsibly. Thank you for your support, Nancy Carmichael

2013 STUFF

THE CRUISER

Thanks Ian & Cathy Harry!

On behalf of the Boston Bar RCMP, we would like to thank you all for making our Stuff the Cruiser event a

huge success. On the coldest day of the year, we accepted donations in the Kal Tire parking lot, and with

this community’s generosity, we were able to gather $1,622 in cash and over 800 lbs of food!! Chilliwack,

Agassiz, and Hope held their events as well and our small community took in more money donations than

both Hope and Agassiz. All the food and money were delivered to our food bank and will stay here. A spe-

cial thanks to Ian and Cathy for helping make our event a success, and of course, keeping us warm and our

belly’s full of pancakes.

We would like to give a friendly reminder that one of the responsibilities of police is to enforce vehicle safety.

This goes beyond driving behaviour, to ensuring the motor vehicles themselves conform to the Motor Vehicle

Act. Motor vehicles found with safety deficiencies or some after-market alterations may be subject to various

forms of enforcement or actions. This can be from a violation ticket to a vehicle inspection order. In more

serious cases, vehicles may be immediately removed from the road. With the ever-changing weather and

road conditions this time of year, it is especially important that motor vehicles operating on our roadways are

safe.

Another arrest warrant has been issued for 30 yr. old ROBERT JONES. If anyone knows of his wherea-

bouts, please contact police at 867-9333 or CrimeStoppers 1-800-222-8477. Boston Bar RCMP

FRASER CANYON SHUTTLE

BUS Fridays, January 3rd, 17th &

31st. Call 869-1831 to book a seat.

FRASER CANYON BETTER at HOME PROGRAM

Shuttle Bus

The BaHP Shuttle Bus has been running successfully every other Friday. The bus has

the capacity to carry 12 passengers, including wheelchairs. I would like to reassure

seniors who have registered with the Better at Home Program, that most seniors qualify

for 100% subsidy; which means it costs you nothing although donations are appreciat-

ed. Your subsidy kicks in when you register with the Program. The bus is available for

everyone, regardless of being a senior or not. Effective January 1st, the fare for people

who want to take the bus (but are not subsidized) nor a senior, is reduced to $20 to

Hope and return. The bus driver will take you wherever you need to go in Hope and

pick you up there.

Snow Clearing

Snow shovelling service will be scheduled depending on the urgency. For example: if

you have to get out ASAP because you have an appointment to keep, you will be

served in order of priority. Once again, I would like to reassure seniors who have regis-

tered with the BaHP, that most seniors qualify for 100% subsidy; which means it costs

you nothing and you will not need money up front and wait for a subsidy cheque. The

program does not work that way although donations are appreciated. Just register and

your subsidy will automatically kick-in. Client Intake Forms are available at

Canyon Lanes, Family Place or call BaHP 604-869-1831. If you are not a

senior but require the service, call the office for further information.

It takes time to form caring family relationships. Here are some ideas to help you develop a

positive relationship with your child.

Spend Quality Time With Your Child—frequent, small amounts of time throughout the day is

special to your child. Stop what you are doing and make yourself available.

Talk With Your Child—talking helps them to learn to speak, teaches conversational and so-

cial skills and boosts your child’s self-esteem.

Show Affection—holding, touching, cuddling, kissing, massaging, tickling and hugging help

children feel cared for and comfortable with giving and receiving affection.

Praise Your Child—notice your child behaving well and praise them for behaviour you like.

Descriptive praise is better than general approval. For example; thank you for not interrupt-

ing.

Set a Good Example—let your child watch you and describe what you are doing and let

your child copy your actions. Don’t expect your child to follow house rules; such as tidy up

after yourself, when you leave your own things lying around.

Use incidental teaching—when your child approaches you for information; this is a good

time to prompt your child to come up with answers such as; what colour do you think it is?

What else is the same colour? This is incidental teaching. Use ask, say, do such as ask what is

the first thing we do; say how; then do the action. FRASER CANYON HOSPICE SOCIETY

Fraser Canyon Hospice Society will gladly offer its pro-

grams in Boston Bar if there is enough interest. Pro-

grams include: grief support groups, caregiver support

groups, hospice training programs, and relaxation. If

you are interested in joining a group, receiving support,

or attending a course, please contact: Ashleigh at 604-

860-7713 or

[email protected]

On behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society, I would like to thank

EVERYONE in Boston Bar/North Bend for their support of our 2013

Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley.

Every year the members of the Boston Bar Community pitch in to provide an amazing lunch for our rid-

ers and support crew. We greatly appreciate that many people step up to help prepare sandwiches,

cookies, squares and other dishes so that our riders and volunteers are well fed. The weather this year

was not nearly as nice as last year. The team was hit with rain (a lot of rain), wind and well, more rain in

2013! The welcome we receive from the Boston Bar community, is always so enjoyable; this year was

no different. In fact, the riders and crew always look forward to our stop in Boston Bar—it is considered

a highlight of the Tour. You always have some sort of fundraising. This in addition to the food, accom-

modation, and shelter is greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your support!

This past September, our Tour team rode over 830 km throughout the Fraser Valley to raise funds and

awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society. We visited over 90 schools and businesses, and are on

track to raising over $400,000 again this year. Since 1997 over $29 million has been raised in more

than 60 communities across the Province. All donations contributed go to the best childhood cancer

research and to support programs that help children and their families.

Cops for Cancer ……………… is already starting to plan for 2014 Tour de Valley. It is our hope the

community of Boston Bar will continue to support out Tour .,,,,…………… Thank you again for your

support ……………….. We are making a difference in the lives of children living with cancer.

Best regards, Cst. Karen Cryer, Chairperson,

and Ann Walsh, Team Lead, Regional Committee
