A Fond Farewell... byBeritKimrey

Donsold his latest Yellow Jacket. She went home to Texas, very close to where

the Yellow Jacket factory was in the 1950s. That was our “story boat” – you know how some boats seem to make everyone who views them want to tell you the story of how they first skied, or helped re-varnish grandpa’s boat, or how an uncle let them help make a wooden boat.

I think there is a new wave of nostalgia and a desire to make those memories come alive in young families again. After each Heartland event, we get phone calls about how to find information, where to locate a boat, and yes, how to find a caring new owner for the boat in the barn.

So my message is to get your boats out there to generate the memories and the interest in classic boats. Wear the new logo so that you become known as a resource for boating information. And have fun in the process. The stories you’ll hear and the people you’ll meet are part of the treasure you own as a classic boater.

It’s also time for nominationstotheBoardofDirectors for new three year terms. Interested parties or those with suggestions should contact MikeLanghorne at(501)318-7666. Terms will begin following the election to be held at GrandLake. MKathy

“Believe me my young friend; there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

I thasbeen a pleasure to serve as your co-editor with JohnWatkins for the last several years. Throughout

my association with HeartlandClassics, I’ve had the privilege of interacting with (via email and facebook) many wonderful people. I’ve learned so much about your passion for the art of classic boating and I’ve truly delighted in contributing to MahoganyandChrome.

I wish you all the very best in your endeavors in the water and in your activities as a group. Here’s to clear skies and blue water- be safe! M

ACBS 2012 International Event Scheduled for Table Rock Lake

T hecontract with BigCedarResorthas been signed and planning is underway for the2012ACBS

InternationalBoatShowandAnnualMeeting at TableRockLakeSeptember20–23,2012. TheHeartlandChap-ter is proud to have been selected to be the host chapter for this prestigious event. We believe that the beauty of the Ozarks and Table Rock Lake, as well as the central geographic location, will attract ACBS boaters from all over the country. The event was held last year at the MuskokaLakes in Ontario,Canada. BayHarbor,Mich.will host the function in September of this year. The 2011 gathering will be held in LakeGeneva,Wis.

While we are excited to be hosting this event, we also know that it will require significant efforts, both for planning during the next 2 years, but also for the numerous responsibilities during the event itself. Although not all of our responsibilities have been identified or assigned at this point, we do know that we will have the lead in planning and carrying out the pre event activities during the week before the annual show and meeting actually begin. Initial planning includes several cruises on Table Rock Lake as well as activities at the Resort and in the Branson area. These activities will probably begin

on Sunday and carry through Wednesday of the event week. Our responsibilities during the event will include such things as assistance in launching boats, trailer parking, greeting participants at the registration desk, preparing welcome bags prior to participant arrival, managing the gates and traffic at the Boat Show itself, and other assistance during the event.

We are in the process of forming a steering committee to begin planning for the event. We will also need committee chairs for each of our responsibility areas, and certainly we will need lots of volunteers to assist both in planning and dur-ing the event. We believe that most pre event planning can be accomplished by conference calls and internet communication.

So, we have two requests for all Heartland Chapter members. First, put the week of September18th,2012 on your calendar and begin to make plans to attend this great event on Table Rock Lake. Second, please contact DonParker to volunteer your assistance in serving on the Steering Committee or to offer your help during the event itself. You can contact Don at [email protected], or at (417)739-2124.M

A fterskipping a couple of years I decided it was time to make another trip to the Lone Star State’s beautiful

Gulf Coast at Seabrook, Texas’s LakewoodYachtClub for the 15thAnnual“Keels&WheelsConcursD’Elegance”. As co-driver with my friend BobbyGibson, we towed his 1959 16' Century Resorter named “Doctor Bob”.

Friday was setup day for the show and then evening events including a “Poolside Grill & Social” at the yacht club cabana sponsored by the ACBSSouthwestChapter. ACBSPresidentGailTurner and her husband Bill also made the trip to Texas to attend the show.

Saturday marked the start of the two-day show that is open to the public. If you have never attended this event, I encourage you to do so. There are antique and classic boats as well as exotic, classic, antique and muscle cars on display. There is also the HoustonClassicAuction held on the yacht club grounds. An air show reenacted the attack on Pearl Harbor…complete with WW2 Japanese Zero warplanes.

Several HeartlandClassics members were present and collected a fair share of the awards:• ClassicUtilityCenturyBestofClass as well as Best

Anoldergentleman in Kansas paid to have his 1956ChrisCraftSports-

man for sale on the HeartlandClassicswebsite. He had begun a restoration years earlier by removing the engine, turning it over, and taking the old bottom off in anticipation of putting on a complete new bottom. However, age and health prob-lems put a halt to the project and it sat waiting in his shop for someone to take over the project.

The project was more than prospective buyers were willing to tackle, so this June he asked us to remove the listing. The boat would be hauled to the city dump July 1st when he moved into a retirement residence. My husband, Don, called him back and asked for pictures and promised to find a home for the poor old boat. To make a long story short, MikeLanghorne has a similar boat he is planning to restore and was willing to drive to Kansas to pick up the boat, engine and all the original hardware.

Don and I received a wonderful thank you note from the gentle-man, expressing his genuine appreciation for helping save his old classic boat from a fateful trip to the trash pile.Mike, thanks so much for your part in saving this old boat!M

Whilecruising the Southbound St.

John’s River Cruise with some 30 other classic boats in 2009 as a precur-sor to the TavaresACBSBoatShow, we put in at the beautiful SilverGlenSpringsRecreationalArea for a scheduled stop and a fine BBQ lunch. The water was quite shal-low going in - about 2.5 to 3.0 feet, and the narrow entrance into the Springs required us to idle through a large area of underwater grasses. I could tell I probably picked up some grass on my prop. In lock step with the other boats, we nosed ARRRGH! into the bank and tied her off. Since I was already in my swim trunks, I slipped into the water and waded to the back of the boat - now almost waist deep in the water. I hadSusanMiller raise the outdrive, and I commenced to removing the grass wound around my prop. In order to reach the last little bit, I bent down, unknowing submersing the bottom of my auto-inflate life vest. In less than one second, a loud POP-PSSSST and pressure about my head and face startled me out of my tranquil task to the sound of laughter from my crew! The picture says it all! M

Saturday CruisemasterJohnThompson in his recently acquired Skiff Craft day cruiser led a twenty-two mile, two-state cruise along mile after mile of beautiful Ozark scenery into Arkansas. The boaters then selected from a choice of several potential lunch locations, including Big Cedar Resort, State Park Marina, Chateau Resort, Indian Point Floating Cafe, and Rock Lane Resort.

ThenSaturday evening DickandCaraMoist hosted their traditional brisket dinner with all of the trimmings at the Ozark Yacht Club. It was a great din-ner, a perfect venue, and a great opportunity to greet old friends, make new acquaintances, discuss old boats, and enjoy the perfect weather. And, what

better place to celebrate wedding anniversaries forBobandMillicentVanDyke and ChickandKaronWheat– these two couples represent 105 years of marriage. Congratulations!

Sunday morning Cruisemasters LarryandJanHinton, in their 1949 22’ Chris Craft Sportsman ‘Mischief’ led the cruise to Big Cedar Lodge for a great breakfast on the deck overlooking the lake while we reminisced about the weekend activities.

We want to thank all of the volunteers and participants so much for spending their weekend on Table Rock Lake with us. Commit-tee members DickandCaraMoist, JohnandCarolynnThomp-son, and BruceandSusanTurpin all provided so much help to make the weekend a success. Our hope is that everyone had an opportunity to renew old acquaintances, make some new friends, and of course enjoy the beautiful blue water and scenery of Table Rock Lake in superb antique and classic boats. And, of course, we hope that you will all join us next year, June9-12,2011. M

Rendezvous 2010 at Beautiful Garvan GardensLakeHamilton, located in HotSprings,

Ark., was the setting for a classic boat rendezvous and show from April 15th through 18th, 2010.

After an evening of Sam’spizza, a day cruise around the lake with grilled lunch at SunsetCove and an evening at Fisher-man’sWharf, the boats moved to GarvanWoodlandGardens for a show open to the public. Many questions were answered and remembrances shared.

Garvan Woodland Gardens is a beautiful 210 acre wonderland of forest and flowers managed by the UniversityofArkansas. Each year show participants and guests enjoy the park and marvel at the work done by volunteers such as HeartlandClassics members Stuart and DianaPerry. M
