Having wanted to write something with an adventurousspirit, Beethoven created the exhilarating Fidelio Overturewhich is a tour de force of orchestral virtuosity.

The epitome of Romanticism and one of the most popularconcertos in the classical repertory, Bruch’s ViolinConcerto No.1 opens with an impassioned flourish for thesolo violin. Performed by the outstanding violinist TasminLittle and conducted by Rory Macdonald, this piececontrasts rhythmic orchestral pattern with a dramatic solo theme.

Closing the concert will be Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.3.Inspired by his visit to Scotland as part of his ‘Grand Tour’,Mendelssohn’s ‘Scottish’ Symphony evokes the wildness ofthe Highlands with the spirit of the Romantic movement.

Tuesday 15 December 7.30pmThe Sixteen & Harry ChristophersTHE VIRGIN MOTHER AND CHILDFocusing on the relationship between the Virgin Mother and Child, this year’s programmecontrasts the serene and beautiful sounds of early Renaissance polyphony with the dramaticintensity of music by some of today’s most admired composers. The evening will open with the‘Gloria’ from Tallis’s magnificent seven-part Christmas Mass Puer Natus est, followed byTavener’s haunting The Lamb - a piece he claimed came to him ‘fully formed, so all I had to dowas write it down’(Tavener, 1982). Like Tavener and many of the composers featured in thisprogramme, James MacMillan’s music is deeply rooted in the Catholic faith; his piece O RadiantDawn compares Christ’s bringing of light and eternal life to the brilliant rising sun. With aselection of traditional and modern carols including Gabriel Jackson’s luscious The Christ Child, this programme will provide a peaceful antidote to the hectic pre-Christmas rush!
