CLASSIC TIMES From our Director: Lynda Christison…. Many, many thanks to everyone who participated in our

2014-15 Moving for Meals fundraising campaign. Our goal was $60,000. We raised $75,646.94 after expenses!!! At $3 per meal (for food only), this pays for 25,215 meals or food for five meals per week for 97 seniors for a year. Please help us spread the word about up-coming events and the importance of meals and Senior Centers to everyone in Lexington County. July first marks the start of the 2015-16 campaign. Your con-tributions and those of your family, friends, and the community continue to

be important as the numbers of seniors needing meals increases. Senior hunger is a real issue in Lexington Coun-ty. Thank you for being a huge part of the solution.

Are you age 65 or older and on both Medicare and Medi-caid? If so, you are considered “Dual Eligible” and have additional health care options. Please carefully read the materials that you have or will receive in the mail from S. C. Healthy Connections Prime, get your questions an-swered, and choose the health care option that is best for you.

Exciting things are happening at the Pine Ridge and Gilbert-Summit Senior Centers. Both Pine Ridge’s new facility and Gilbert-Summit’s expansion and renovation are well underway!! Hopefully, both will be completed by Thanks-giving. Many thanks to the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging for funding towards the cost of building the new Pine Ridge Senior Center.

This is the first year we have hosted Senior Games jointly with Irmo-Chapin Recreation Commission. New venues, new faces, and lots of fun for everyone. Congratulations to all of our athletes! Thanks to all who participated in the 2015 Senior Sports Games. It was inspirational to see all of you. This year, we had an outstanding delegation of Lexington County athletes go to Florence for the South

Carolina Games. There certainly are a lot of ribbons to be admired!!

Many, many thanks to all of our Christmas in Lexington County volunteers. We have received some wonderful words of appreciation from the homeowners whose homes were repaired and yards cleaned-up.

What a lovely day we all had at Camp Kinard for the Senior Appreciation Picnic. You could not have asked for nicer weather! Fishing, a nature walk, horseshoes, corn hole, music, dancing, snow cones, face painting, great food and wonderful folks attending – what a perfect day.

Many thanks to Southern Care for hosting the 2015 Seniors Art Show at Tri-City. The items entered were amazing. An incredible amount of talent and creativity was on display. Congratulations to everyone who en-tered!!

The 2015 SC Seniors Farmers’ Nutrition Program was an overwhelming success! Please be sure you use all five of your $5 vouchers by October 15, 2015. Remember that the farmers can’t give you change for the vouchers.

Summer has arrived! Lazy days, warm evenings that are prefect for cooking out, gardens and yards to relax in, the beach, the mountains … what summer activities do you enjoy the most? Each of our Senior Centers offers a wide variety of fun things to do this summer. Take a look at the activities listed in this issue of Classic Times to see if there is something you would enjoy participating in. Come join us and bring a friend or come make new ones.

Keep moving, stay hydrated, and have a wonderful summer!!!

Be Safe this

Summer... When

the Temperature,

Humidity, and Heat

Index Rise

It’s HOT outside! A heat wave is more than 48 hours of 90˚ or greater temperatures and 80% or higher humidi-ty. The heat index tells you how hot it really feels. If you do not have air conditioning or it’s not working, how do you safely survive the extreme heat that can be a part of South Carolina summers? The American Na-tional Red Cross, the CDC, and the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging offer the following tips.

During the hottest part of the day, turn off lights, and stay in the coolest part of your home.

Partially open up windows for ventilation. Air trapped in the house will heat up during the course of the day.

Don’t go outside during the hottest part of the day. Drink lots of fluids, preferably water. Remind others

to drink plenty of water. Skip alcohol or bever-ages with high amounts of sugar.

If it gets too hot in the house, take a cool bath or shower.

Put cool cloths on pulse points: wrists, ankles, arm-pits, and the back and sides of your neck.

Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. Eat small meals and eat more often. If you go outside, slow down, avoid strenuous activi-

ties, and take regular breaks. Pets can get overheated, too. If possible, keep them

inside and make sure they have plenty of fresh water.

If your home is too hot and you have transportation, go to an air-conditioned place, such as the li-brary, book store, mall, grocery store or senior center.

Adults over 65, children under 4, people with medical problems, and those without air conditioning are most at risk for heat related health problems. For more information, visit www.aging.sc.gov.
