Last September, in response to God’s encouragement, I
contacted every church leader and every church in our nation
that I could fi nd. The purpose was to invite every
church leader and every church to commit to pray through the month of November for a move of God that would lead to revival in our nation. The encouragement was for them to pray for the sake of the church in our nation and for the sake of our nation, in whatever format worked for them.
Revival is a church word. The unsaved have never had life; it is only the church who have had life and who are in need of the revival fi res of God. As the church goes, so goes the nation and our nation at its worst needs the church at its best. “Our struggle is not against fl esh and blood but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
More than 2000 churches and church leaders were contacted – twice.
I’m sure only a few were missed. Less than 1 per cent responded positively and were committed to praying through the month of November last year. A signifi cantly higher percentage responded negatively, some abusively. Some church leaders stated that there was no need for revival in the church in New Zealand. One church leader was offended that I would suggest that God judges nations! The vast major-ity of church leaders and churches responded by not responding.
In Ephesians 5:16, Paul speaks about redeeming the time “because the days are evil”. Vance Havner wrote that the days are evil because of anarchy in the world, apostasy in the church and apathy in the individual believer.
John R. Rice stated that present-day wickedness, apostasy and modern civilisation cannot prevent revival. Colin Urquhart says revival is about God, His children meeting with God, and the nation being confronted with Him. Dr Andrew Murray wrote that “a revived church is the only hope for a dying world”.
Come Lord by Your Spirit. Meet Your children and confront our nation with Your truth, Your presence and Your power. We need You.

God Defend New Zealand

In the fourth Century the Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great, adopted Christianity as the state religion and the era known as Christen-dom began.
Throughout the medieval period and through to early modernity, Christi-anity held a position of sociological, political, moral and cultural infl uence (even ‘power’) that was certainly not characteristic of the fi rst three centuries of the Christian movement. Over time, Christendom gradually gave way to secularism. In 1961 Gabriel Vahanian published ‘The Death of God’ arguing that modern secular culture in most of Western Civilization had lost all sense of the sacred or any sense of providence and that for the modern mind: ‘God was dead’.
Appreciating that we now live in a post-Christian context, Walter Brueggemann encourages Christians to understand their contemporary culture using the metaphor of ‘exile’. Not in the sense of geography but rather socially, cultur-ally and morally. In a post-Christian society it should not be surprising
that contemporary culture, governmen-tal legislation, mainstream media, and even social media promote ideals some would consider ‘un-Christian’.
It should be expected and need not be cause for alarm. The ‘exile’ despair is not a valid option, nor is assimilation.
Christians must creatively live out in their world faith, hope and love. Don’t sigh and despair. Don’t point the fi nger and judge. Don’t fi re off Bible verses as if they somehow have sway in a secular context. Rather creatively live out the counter narrative of the Bible. Let the light of your life lived in Christ shine all the more brightly as testimony and witness.
