2D Shapes:

Shapes having length and breadth only are called two

dimensional(2D) shapes.

Eg: Square, Rectangle, Triangle, Circle

3D Shapes:

Shapes having length, breadth and height are called three

dimensional(3D) shapes.

Eg: Cube, Cuboid, Cone, Sphere

NCERT TEXT BOOK Pg.No:126

Sweet box

Make your own sweet box and paste in your notebook.

Hint: Use the cut-out on page no:201. Fold the cut-out along its dotted

lines and make a sweet box.

Find out which of these can be made into a box:

Ans: a and c

CUBE

*A cube is a 3Dimensional (3D) shape.

*A cube is made by 6 squares. i,e, it has 6 faces.

*All the sides of a cube are equal in measurements.

*A cube has 8 corners.

*A cube has 12 edges.

NCERT TEXT BOOK Pg.No:127

Shapes that fold into a cube

Draw different shapes on a square grid paper(1cm) so that, it can be

folded into cubes.

*Area of each design is 6 squarecm. It is clearly known that. Cube has

6 faces.

*All the designs drawn above can be folded into cubes.

*Area of each face of the cube = side x side

Draw one shape which will not fold into a cube?

Look around and discuss which things around you look like a cube.

Ans: chalk box, dice, ice cube

Shapes for an open box:

OPENBOX

Q.1.Find out which of the other shapes (on page no:40) can be folded

to make an open box. (Draw it using square grid paper)

Q.2. Draw more shapes which will not fold to make an open box.

Boxes and boxes:

All boxes are not cubes. Here are some different kinds of boxes.

Match each shape with a box into which it fold.

Floor maps

The 2Dimensional representation of the map of a house is

called floor map.

For making a house floor map is first made.

It shows where the windows and doors are in the house.

Page 5: Class: V Sub: Maths Chapter: Boxes and Sketcheskvnagercoil.ac.in/.../Mat/CH10_Notes_Boxes_and_Sketches.pdf · 2019-04-23 · CUBE *A cube is a 3Dimensional (3D) shape. *A cube is

The side which contains the door is front side. There are two

windows on the front side.

Note: From the floor map, we cannot make out a house really looks

like or how high the windows are.

Deep Drawings:

The special way of drawing the house which is deep to show

its length, width and height is called a deep drawing of a house.

Deep drawing of a house is a 3D representation of the map of a

house.

Here are four deep drawings of a house are given.

c) d)

Which one is the correct deep drawing of the above given floor map.

Ans: ‘d’

Why do the other three deep drawings not match with the floor map.

Ans: (a) the back wall is not staight in the floor map.

(b) a window is drawn on the extreme side wall.

(c) the window is drawn in side wall is in middle, but in

actual figure(floor map), it is near to the corner.

Deep drawing of a cuboid

*A cuboid is a 3Dimensional (3D) shape.

*A cuboid has 6 faces.

*A cuboid has length, width and height of different measurements.

*A cuboid has 8 corners. *A cuboid has 12 edges.

2) Make a matchbox model which look like this.

From the top From the front From the side

Hint: Using match boxes, make a model which shows its top, front,

side as mentioned above.

*Also make a deep drawing of a model in your notebook.

3)How many cubes are needed to make this interesting model?

Ans: 95

Hint: 5 cubes in 9 columns ,5 x 9 = 45

4 cubes in 7 columns, 4 x 7 = 28

3 cubes in 5 columns, 3 x 5 = 15

2 cubes in 3 columns, 2 x 3 = 6

1 cube in 1 column, 1 x 1 = 1

Total no of cubes = 95

*Mark the correct top view drawing with ‘T’ and the correct side

view drawing with ‘S’of the given interesting model .
