How do I get participation points in this class? Participation:Participation points will be given in this class based on your use of the iClicker during class

document.doc 5/5/2023 2

Page 3: Class Syllabus - Porterville College Bulletin Boardhome.portervillecollege.edu/eKeele/Nursing Fundamental…  · Web viewPTVN P009: Nursing Fundamental Concepts – Class Syllabus

if you miss more than one (a minimum of 90%), you will receive no participation points for the day. Dead batteries, “I forgot my iClicker at home” and other types of excuses still result in zero points. Are there any other general rules that I should know about? General:

Students are expected to attend each class, be punctual, and assume responsibility for assigned activities, be active participants in the learning process, and meet all established level objectives. You cannot make up a missed quiz. Only excused absences will be given an opportunity to make up an exam (see Quizzes & Exams). The instructor reserves the right to drop any student who misses two or more classes. Cell phones and pagers must be turned off or placed in silent mode during class time. Children are not allowed in classroom or clinical setting. Computers and computer usage are allowed in the classroom as long as they are not a distraction to other students. Children are not allowed in classroom.

What do I need to know about quizzes in this course? Quizzes:A quiz or exam will be given on a regular basis (weekly). Scan trons will be used for the majority

of the quizzes however some quizzes will be administered using the iClicker or fill in the blank, matching format. Please bring a scan-tron form #882-ES to all quizzes and exams. Exams and quizzes are timed – 1 minute for each question. If you do not use/bring a scan tron, 10% will be taken from your score. Arriving late and after the quiz has been distributed to the whole class will also result in a 10% deduction from your score.

Quizzes and exams are based on reading and lecture notes. There are to be no cell-phones out during test or quiz time! Electronic devices other than a calculator may not be used for in-class calculations work (ie. Cell phones, ipads, etc). Students are responsible for material presented during their absence. There is one opportunity to make up one missed quiz; this is done at the final exam time. All students will have an opportunity to make up a missed quiz or their lowest score. One quiz score (the lowest) will be “dropped” at the end of the grading period, and replaced with the score on their “make-up” quiz. Students will not be allowed to retake any exam or quiz on which an unsatisfactory grade was earned. Students may make arrangements with the instructor to review an individual exam up to two (2) weeks after the exam is returned.

You are allowed to use a calculator on all quizzes; however there some rules. Only approved calculators are allowed (please see the section “Text & Supplies”). Let me emphasize here that NO CELL PHONE may be used during quizzes or tests – the calculator must be a stand-alone calculator. Also there is no sharing of calculators during quizzes or exams. Students are expected to be professional and bring all of their necessary equipment and supplies with them to class.

What is the format for the final exam? Final Exam:The final exam is a 100 question comprehensive exam covering all of the concepts covered in

this course and is based on reading and lecture notes. Please bring a scan-tron form #882-ES to the final exam. The final is timed – 1 minute for each question. There are to be no cell-phones out during test! Electronic devices other than a calculator may not be used for in-class calculations work (ie. Cell phones, ipads, etc). If you do not use/bring a scan tron, 10% will be taken from your score. Arriving late and after the final has been distributed to the whole class will also result in a 10% deduction from your score.

What is the honesty and integrity policy for this class? Honesty: There will be zero tolerance for academic dishonesty, including plagiarism. Plagiarism is the

intentional use of another person’s idea, data, information, or work without giving credit. I require honesty on tests and assignments. If a student cheats on a test or assignment, or plagiarizes, I will give an “F” grade (0/zero points) on that assignment and I will report the incident to the Dean. I will also notify the chair or the Health Careers division.

Students caught trying to cheat with iClickers (whether trying to copy answers or trying to get participation/quiz points when you are not present) will automatically lose all participation points (for the whole semester). A second offense will result in being dropped from the course.

Using a cell phone during an exam or quiz is considered cheating. No cell phones should be even visible during an exam; and if they are made visible constitutes cheating.

What learning resources and tutorial resources are available? Learning Center / Tutorial Services:The Learning Center, located in the Library (LMC), offers individualized programs in English,

math, reading, vocabulary, and various learning skills. Flexible scheduling allows students to use the center almost any time their schedules will permit. Tutors are available to at no cost to students who feel a need for assistance. Appointments with tutors may be made in the Learning Center located in the LMC. Please make use of these resources that are available to you.

If I have learning disability and ness accommodation what should I do? Reasonable Accommodation:If you have a disability that may require assistance or accommodation, or you have questions

related to any accommodation for testing, note takers, readings, etc., please speak with the instructor as soon as possible. Students may also contact the Disability Resource Center (559) 791-2215 with questions about such services.

Can I record lectures? Instructor’s Intellectual Rights:Individual instructors retain intellectual property rights to lectures and class presentations and

related material; notes or other class materials may not be exchanged or distributed for commercial purposes, for compensation or for any other purpose other than study by the individual student enrolled in the class. Unauthorized use of class notes or recordings is subject to the federal Copyright Act, California Civil Code, and Program policy and may subject an individual to failure of the course and/or legal proceedings brought by the instructor, as well as the Health Careers Department. Examples of violation of this policy include, but not limited to, audio recording, and any electronic posting such as YouTube, blogging, podcasting, etc. Students may not tape record during any test preview or review; however students are welcomed to record lectures for their own review and benefit.

When is the research paper do? Do I have to do a research paper? Research Paper:There is a mandatory research paper required to pass this course. This paper is due on

November 10, 2016. This paper is not accepted late. Failure to turn in a paper on time or receiving a grade of less than 50% results in an F in the class.
