CHILDREN’S SUMMERART PROGRAM

FIREHOUSE ART CENTER CHILDREN’S ART EDUCATIONThe Children’s Summer Art Program is designed to educate and encourage children to express themselves through the arts with original ideas and concepts. FAC classes help children build fundamental and advanced cognitive skills and promote diverse methods of critical thinking and learning. The FAC’s Creating with the Masters curriculum introduces children to the works of master and modern artists and teaches them about the history of art, museums, and art techniques while meeting the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. If you would like to sponsor a scholarship for a child, please call the Firehouse Art Center. Your small donation can have a great impact for a child in need.

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART PROGRAMMinimum enrollment: 9 // Maximum enrollment: 15Children attend daily, Monday through Friday, for either one or two weeks. Sessions are offered by age group, with two classes in each group. Children will attend both classes for their age group in the selected class session. A 15 minute supervised recess will take place in the park between classes. Tuition includes all materials. During the last half hour of the final class in each session, parents are invited to view a mini exhibition of work produced during the program. The Children’s Summer Art Program is funded in part by the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and the City of Norman.

Please visit the Firehouse Art Center or call 405.329.4523 to enroll.

CHILDREN’S SUMMER ART SHOWAugust 10 - August 25 | Reception: Friday, August 17 from 6 - 8 PMEach summer, the FAC Gallery features the work of students who participated in that year’s Children’s Summer Art Program. One piece of artwork from each student that took a class during the summer will be selected to be shown in the exhibition. The art show is an exciting experience for the students, allowing them the opportunity to showcase the effort they put into their art through a professional gallery setting. The Samo Ducky Project began in 2010 as a Firehouse Art Center initiative to develop an icon that would appeal to all ages and become a symbol of local arts by promoting and increasing the visibility of public art in the Norman community.

In 2011, the Public Arts Board (PAB) began searching for ideas to enhance our Norman Parks. The PAB liked the concept of the Cow Parade in Chicago and other similar projects, but wanted to create something unique, produced locally and that incorporated its mission, to create exciting, appealing, and harmonious public spaces through the integration of art into public places.

The PAB accepted a proposal to use the Firehouse Art Center’s original duck, “Samo Ducky,” designed by Douglas Shaw Elder. The PAB hired 3-D Extreme in Norman to cast fiberglass reproductions of the original duck and published a “Request for Proposals” to Norman artists to submit their visions of the duck sculptures to paint and enhance.

The goal of the duck project is to create a sculpture that is inviting, stimulating and that fosters social interaction while enhancing our community parks. In addition to Samo Ducky, residing next to the Firehouse in Lions Park, there are 23 ducky installations currently located in Norman:

The Firehouse Art Center’s Art Education in Schools programming primarily focuses on providing visual arts education and experiences to K-5 students in the Norman Public School (NPS) system. A majority of Norman’s public elementary schools are without regular art educators and are considered Title I, meaning 40% or more of the students are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. As a community institution dedicated to providing the highest quality visual arts education and experiences, the Firehouse Art Center supplements these challenges through the provision of both regular and project-based arts education programs in Norman’s public elementary schools. All in-school art education projects and programs introduce visual art education that connects the students’ current curriculum with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. Projects are designed to allow children to see their subject from a different viewpoint, to expand the ways in which they absorb information, and to express their understanding of their education in a vibrant way.

The FAC’s Art Education in Schools programs are made possible through grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council, Norman Arts Council, and Allied Arts, and through generous individual donations. To support, volunteer for, or donate to Art Education in Schools programs, please contact the Firehouse by email at [email protected].

Kids Art is Smart at Lincoln ElementarySince 2009, the Firehouse has partnered with the Norman Arts Council and Norman Public School System to produce the Kids Art is Smart program. Currently, the program is being administered at Lincoln Elementary School, where Firehouse instructor Jane Lawson provides comprehensive visual arts education to all 310 PreK-5 students. Instruction is provided on a consistent basis throughout the school year, supplementing the lack of dedicated visual arts instruction in Norman’s public elementary schools, while meeting the educational needs of Norman’s schoolchildren. Lawson works closely with PreK-5 teachers at Lincoln to develop comprehensive visual arts education lessons that challenges children to see their curriculum from a different viewpoint and to express their understanding of the classroom material in a visual way.

The Firehouse Art Center (FAC) is proud to announce that it has been selected as a recipient of funding by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for the coming year. The FAC was awarded the Arts Engagement in American Communities grant to provide visual arts programming to underserved and underrepresented groups in the Norman community. Through the FAC’s community outreach, Healing Studio, and new veterans program, the organization is able to serve community members that often lack the opportunity to engage with the visual arts. The Firehouse has endeavored to reach these individuals by providing arts programming, offered at no cost to participants, that is accessible to people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and ability levels.

Receiving NEA funding is an honor for the Firehouse, as it represents not only monetary support but national recognition of the quality of programming developed by the FAC. All of the FAC’s programs are built around educational visual arts experiences that focus on self-expression, creativity, art history, and technical skills, with a foundational curriculum rooted in the FAC’s Creating with the Masters and the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts: Visual Arts guidelines. The technical skills required of the projects and activities for these programs are adaptable and can accommodate individuals of all abilities.

ARTS ENGAGEMENT IN AMERICAN COMMUNITIES

The Firehouse Art Center is humbled and proud to have been selected as a finalist in the Arts & Humanities category for the prestigious Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards this past April. Executive Director Douglas Shaw Elder credits the committed efforts of the Board of Trustees and staff over the past ten years for the achievements leading to this recognition. “I have never worked with a more dedicated and community-minded Board and staff, and I am proud of the excellent service that the Firehouse Art Center provides to Norman. The diligent efforts and professionalism of these individuals results in the provision of high quality arts education to an average of 14,000 members of the community every year. Being recognized alongside deadCenter Film and Red Earth is an indication of the high caliber of work being done in the Arts in Oklahoma. We are so proud to bring this recognition to Norman.”
