The courses offered are based on industry standards and propel students into high-demand careers and professions. Through CTE courses students may:

Earn industry certification in key areas such as web page designing

Earn dual high school and college credit

Be selected into local industry apprenticeship and internship programs

Earn high school elective credit for paid employment

Build strong portfolios for marketing individual skills and job readiness

Explore careers; learn about jobs of the future and how to be on the cutting edge of employability over the next decade.

Programs of Study The North Kitsap School District Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department have developed Programs of Study to show students and parents a clear pathway to their career and educational goals. The Programs of Study are detailed guides for students, mapping out specific course options for a chosen career path from high school through postsecondary education. Programs of Study show how to smoothly transition into postsecondary education and/or employment from high school. They exemplify the importance of career planning, beginning in middle school. The finished programs of study will be available in the counseling offices, as well as on our school website. If you have any questions, please contact the counseling offices or the NKSD CTE office.

What is TECH PREP?

TECH PREP is a way for students to earn FREE college credits while enrolled in their high school CTE

classes. As they complete the class, and earn a “B” or better, students will receive credit for the equivalent college course. This saves time and money on college. Agreements vary with different colleges. The majority of TECH PREP agreements for North Kitsap School District are with Olympic Community College. Each course is different and must be taken for at least one year or more. Please speak with your individual CTE instructor for more information.

What is VAPA?

Visual and Performing Arts are courses that support the creative development of the individual student.

These classes include band, choir, art, digital graphics, engineering I, web design, technical theatre and yearbook. Each class encourages students to tap into their creative expression and problem solving abilities to make them a well-rounded individual. Most colleges require at least 1.0 credit of VAPA exploration during high school.

ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Add/Drop Policy: Students are expected to carefully plan their academic program and to register for appropriate classes during regular registration. Changes will occur only when a valid educational need is evident. When dropped after the first ten school days of a year-long class or after the first five school days of a semester class, a grade of “E” (withdraw/failure) will be given. Any appeal of the “E” grade must be made in writing to the building principal. Late Arrival/Early Dismissal/Partial Schedules: All students are encouraged to take advantage of the educational opportunities available in school as well as in the community. Some of these community opportunities might exist for students during the regular school day and would require a late arrival or early dismissal from school. These could include internship or mentoring programs, job shadowing experiences, and work-site learning options among others. When these circumstances do occur, students need to apply for a late arrival or early dismissal designation on their schedule. Approval is based on the following criteria:

Student must be of junior or senior standing

Student must be enrolled in sufficient courses to be on track for graduation

Parent, counselor, and administrator must approve the application

Student must not remain at school

Application forms are available in the counseling offices and must be approved before any schedule adjustments are made.

Students are expected to carefully plan their academic program and to register for appropriate classes during regular registration.

There will be LIMITED SCHEDULE CHANGES.

Student\Parent Initiated Schedule Changes

Schedule changes are only considered if a student's schedule is in conflict with their ability to graduate on time, meet post-secondary preferences, or accommodate extraordinary circumstances. Preferred classmates, lunches, or teachers are not considered reasons to change. Furthermore, the appropriate time for a schedule change is before the end of the first week of the semester. Anything later than that places a noticeable strain on students, staff, and curriculum. Should you feel a schedule change is necessary, please take the following steps:

1. Fill out a schedule change form from the counseling office

2. Submit the form to the counselor with a parent signature

3. Follow your existing schedule, even if it’s in error, until schedule change has been granted

If the deadline for a schedule change has passed, please know a schedule change will not be considered unless the following has taken place:

1. Student has accessed available academic interventions first: tutorials, homework club, etc.

2. Student has met with the teacher individually

3. Student has discussed their rationale for a schedule change with their parent or guardian

4. Parent/guardian contacts the teacher in a good faith effort to address concerns

5. Parent communicates the situation to a counselor or administrator

Schedule changes are subject to many variables including class size limit, conflicts with classes offered at the same time, pre-requisites, grad requirements, etc.

Teacher changes will not be considered.
