Review of Items – 1st Semester l ___ Make an appointment with your Guidance Counselor and/or Career Specialist. If possible, have parent attend. Confirm that you are on-track for graduation. l ___ Make sure you are aware of the requirements for the different diploma options & designations. l ___Passing Grade 10 FCAT Reading & the Algebra 1 EOC (if Alg 1 was taken after 2010-2011) are graduation requirements. If you have yet to pass either/or, make efforts to prepare for retakes. l  _✔_Attend your Fall TSIC Mandatory Workshop on Wednesday, October 1st. l  ___ Narrow down college choices to a final list. Pay attention to the dates of

college visits to your school. If you have not done so, plan to visit the campuses of your final choices (if you are able to).

l  ___ Know college admission deadlines and all needed materials for applications. Be aware of Early Action, Early Decision, Priority, and Financial Aid/Scholarship deadlines (these can be as early as Oct. 15th or Nov. 1st).

l  ___ Continue and/or expand involvement in extracurricular activities & seek leadership roles.

l  ___ Review Bright Futures requirements and levels, ensure all is done for you to qualify.

l  ___ If needed re-take, SAT/ACT. As a TSIC Scholar it is mandatory you take either test at least once.

l  ___ Continue or finish earning community service hours. Track hours & turn in form to school. As many as 100 are needed for Bright Futures. Hours earned to date: ___________

l  ___ Submit University Applications. If you plan on attending a State College or Career/Technical Center, become familiar with their requirements & deadlines.

l  ___ Make copies & keep track of all forms you submit & the responses received (college application/admission, scholarship applications/awards, etc.)

l  ___ If you receive notice from a college or university requesting additional or missing information, make sure you provide them with necessary documentation immediately.

l  ___ Continue researching & applying for scholarships - don’t wait, a missed deadline is a missed opportunity! Pasco Education Foundation Senior Scholarships are available on their website from Dec. 1st – Jan. 25th.

Dos and Don’ts of Writing Your Personal statement

l  Don’t write a resume. l  Do be specific. Avoid predicable language and

clichés. l  Don’t use 20 words when 5 will do. Be tight and

concise. l  Do write what interests you. Be open and honest.

Use first person—this is your story, own it! l  Don’t make things up, lie, or exaggerate—but don’t

downplay your story either.

l  Do use concrete examples to support your theme.

l  Don’t try to impress with fancy vocabulary. l  Do revise, revise, and revise! l  Don’t be a joker. Resist using excessive humor. l  Do go out with a bang! End with a concise

conclusion that pulls together your theme. Most readers remember the end rather than the beginning (but they need to get there first)!
