CLASS ASSIGNMENTS
Class Assignment # 1 - Examine the impact of cultural policy on one arts or cultural organization with which you are familiar or which interests you. The organization must be cleared with Professor Zemans by the end of the second class. (Do not use a national cultural institution as this will be the focus of assignment #3). Be sure to include the organization’s engagement with cultural diversity as part of your analysis. Your findings from this assignment will be presented and discussed in weeks three and four.

Class Assignment #2– Using the discussion questions from the course outline as a guide, compare the Massey-Levesque Report, the Applebaum-Hebert Report and The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage’s A Sense of Place, A Sense of Being. Your comparison should begin with a consideration of the overall terms of reference of the reports, their findings and their and recommendations regarding a discipline or sector with which you are familiar or in which you are particularly interested. You should also identify any recent major report(s) on your specific area written in the last decade, include its/their key recommendations in your analysis.

Class Assignment # 3 - Select one FEDERAL cultural institution, i.e. the Canada Council, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the National Arts Centre, the CRTC, Telefilm, the National Film Board or the CBC. Examine the institution’s mandate and its current role nationally and with respect to international activity, as well. Identify the organization’s mandate, key objectives, and current issues. Consider trends in federal funding over the last decade. Identify the issues/problems it is currently addressing. (In the case of the Canada Council, make sure to consider the impact of the most recent plan and the current review of operating grants).
You may use the organization’s website as a basis for your discussion but you should also include current articles, etc. and empirical research where possible. Please make sure you include the institution’s response to the issues of cultural diversity and Canada’s changing demographics and technology.
Note: You must confirm selection of institution with Prof. Zemans before beginning this assignment.
