Where is Nigeria?

The book takes place in NigeriaFor those of you who do not know this, Nigeria is in Africa

The major rivers are the Niger and Benue

The rivers provide a natural division of the country

The largest ethnic groups are the mostly Protestant Yoruba in the west, the Catholic Igbo in the east, and the predominantly Muslim Hausa-Fulani in the north

The original religion of the Igbo (Ibo) is not Catholic, but rather the British missionaries imposed this religion upon the Igbo

Physical Environment of Nigeria

Nigeria's diverse climate, from the tropical areas of the coast to the arid zone of the north, make it possible to produce virtually all agricultural products that can be grown in the tropical and semitropical areas of the world

Despite an abundant water supply, a favorable climate, and wide areas of arable land, productivity is restricted owing to low soil fertility in many areas and inefficient methods of cultivation

Palm oil is derived from the palm fruit and is used for cooking – similar to how we use vegetable oil

Kola Nut

People are more than willing to explain the ceremony, and where there is no kola nut available, the host will need to do the explanatory apology to his visitors. The kola nut tradition is used for a variety of events, but principally to welcome guests to a village or house.

British people in Nigeria? Oh yeah, baby!

During the 19th century, the British government slowly invaded and occupied Nigeria

The British moved into Nigeria with a combination of government control, religious mission, and economic incentive.

In the north, the British ruled indirectly, with the support of the local Muslim leaders, who collected taxes and administered a government on behalf of the British.

In the south, however, where communities (such as Umuofia in Things Fall Apart) were often not under one central authority, the British had to intervene directly and forcefully to control the local population.
