Report Shows Numbers of Ducks Remain High

Major Fish Die-Off at Olive Creek Lake Under Investigation

LINCOLN – Esti-mated duck breeding populations are strong, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Ser-vice’s recent 2018 wa-

terfowl population sta-tus report. Although the numbers are down from 2017, the report shows abundance of most duck species above their long-term averages (1955-2017).

In general, habitat conditions during the 2018 Waterfowl Breed-ing and Population Habitat Survey were slightly poorer relative to 2017, with a few ex-ceptions. Habitat qual-ity generally declined across the survey area compared to last year, except for southern Al-berta and eastern Mon-tana, which improved.

Overall, habitat qual-ity remains good over a large part of the region and should lead to aver-age waterfowl produc-tion this year.

“For most Nebras-ka duck hunters, the trends in the dabbling duck species – mallards, teal, gadwall, wigeon, shoveler and pintail – are the most impor-tant to examine,” said Mark Vrtiska, water-fowl program manager for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commis-sion. “The top two birds in terms of harvest in

Nebraska – mallards and green-winged teal – both are doing very well.” Mallards and green-winged teal still were 17 and 42 percent higher than their long-term averages, respec-tively.

The estimated mal-lard breeding popula-tion this year was 9.3 million birds, down 12 percent from the 2017 estimate.

Green-winged teal were estimated at 3 million birds, down 16 percent from last year. Gadwall, northern shov-eler, northern pintail and blue-winged teal also showed decreases, while wigeon numbers were up slightly.

“From a duck num-bers standpoint, it’s looking good,” Vrtiska said. “The amount of water on the landscape and the right weather are the two remaining factors that will deter-mine just how good our waterfowl hunting suc-cess will be.”

Results from this sur-vey, which primarily assesses duck popula-tions, and other surveys are used to help develop harvest regulations.

LINCOLN – Low oxy-gen levels have caused a major die-off of fish at Olive Creek Lake, ac-cording to the Nebraska Game and Parks Com-mission.

The die-off was re-

ported by the public and investigated by Game and Parks on Aug. 16. Game and Parks staff found extensive numbers of dead largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, black crappie, saugeye

and black bullheads. An evaluation of the

fish kill and remain-ing fish population will be conducted later this summer or fall. Restock-ing likely would not take place until 2019.
