The shortage of fuel and the beating summer rays inspired a team of B.E. 3 rd year Mech. Engg. students named, K.Ashish, T.Himadeep Reddy, Ch. Abhilash, K.Sidhartha Reddy and Ms. R.Ananya, to innovate something practical and usable. Keeping the environment in mind, a “Solar Powered Vehicle” was thought as a good idea, which can be brought to existence. Not being an easy task, the project took off with lot of research both on and off field. With the help and guidance of various professors the issues of listing the components, materials and mechanisms required for building the vehicle were decided. Design of chassis, technical feasibility and financial viability were studied thoroughly. Finally, it ended by naming the vehicle with a Greek word - ‘AETHON’- Solar Car. The team received a prize of Rs.1,00,000/- (Rupees One Lakh only) by participating in A TV show – “What an Idea”, on 7 th April, 2010. The cheque was issued for purpose of working on the prototype of the car. “AETHON”- A Solar Car The fabrication of the vehicle was quite a difficult task. The team decided to use aluminum chassis to reduce the overall weight of the car in order to get more efficiency i.e., 40% more when compared to mild steel. The entire fabrication process took two months, ending with a few minor modifications. Next was the major task of designing a steering mechanism which was extensively worked for over a week under the guidance of an expert mechanic. Installation of DC motor (2.5 H.P.) and its shaft, with drum brakes was completed in a day. The controller is designed especially for the motor; Solar panels and connections were done lastly. Finally, at the end of the stressful and tiring journey, the team was proud to say that they successfully come out with a vehicle which could develop a maximum speed of 40 Kmph and batteries could provide enough power for the vehicle to run for over 2 hrs. The team’s confidence further increased when the vehicle won the 4 th place among 18 teams all over India in SHAASTRA the Technical festival of IIT MADRAS. The team is glad that this project is considered as one of our college's reason to be proud.

Impact Testing of Advanced Ceramic Composites using Experimental and Numerical Analysis:

Abstract: The increasing use of advanced Ceramic Composites in Aircrafts, Automobiles, Missile Systems and Space Structures has been well documented and has been continuously receiving the wide attention of industry. The structural engineer needs to be familiar with the property of the composite material structures. The behavior of ceramic composite material under impact load plays a pivotal role in designing such structures. The current article presents the dynamic behavior of the advanced ceramic composite material (Carbon-Silicon Carbide) under the impact load and the mechanical properties, viz., Fracture Toughness and Impact Strength. An impact test is a test for determining the energy absorbed in fracturing a test piece at high velocity. The impact resistance of a part is, in many applications, a critical measure of service life.

INTRODUCTION:

In the last 20 years, a great development has occurred in impact machines. The development of reliable mini-transducers has allowed researchers to apply to pendulums and drop weight instruments the same concepts widely applied in the past to the static loading machines. With oscilloscopes in the past and personal computers of nowadays it is possible to measure the force transferred by a striker to a specimen even at high loading rates. This revolution has provided researchers, industries with a new way to characterize material properties during impact. The minimum knowledge required about a material to characterize fracture properties comes from a force-time (or force-displacement) diagram [1]. When performing a test with an instrumented falling weight, it is possible to record the force acting on the specimen throughout the impact. The curve on ceramic materials at a certain loading rate provides an explanation of several physical phenomena. The Fractovis, CEAST S.p.A, Italy Falling Weight Tester, shown in Fig. 1 is designed to perform tests on specimens of different materials (ceramics and composites) under a wide range of variable conditions: energy, temperature, impact velocity. Special supports allow tests on real object of different shape. The Fractovis provides full details of the impact event, from the initial contact to the final failure of the specimen, monitoring the relative force/time curve on its data acquisition system DAS 8000 WIN. The Fractovis is the most advanced, safe, versatile and user-friendly instrument used in research and quality control laboratories. Features: • Possibility to interchange. • Specimen supports. • Strikers with different shapes and force transducers

(piezoelectric or strain-gauge, or accelerometer up to 40 kN force range).

• User-friendly: All test parameters are set on the PC with the software D8EXTWIN, which also controls the operational features of Fractovis through the data acquisition hardware.

• Versatile: Using CEAST Fractovis we get the full range of impact energies and speeds necessary for our materials.

• Safe: Due to the high energies involved, CEAST has taken particular care of the safety features within the Fractovis. Micro-switches and protective circuits ensure that the operator performs the test in totally safe conditions. A special key controls access for maintenance operations.

• Standards: Designed and built to meet the following standards - ISO 180, ASTM D 256, ASTM D 6110 and other equivalent.

DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM:

The new DAS 8000 WIN is CEAST’s innovative Data Acquisition System for instrumented impact tests. The DAS 8000 is designed to record data during rapid events such as impact tests and to control some instruments prior to and during test execution. The DAS 8000 is designed to be used in conjunction with the CEAST instruments Viz, Fractovis. The new DAS 8000 is based upon a modular structure which allows the acquisition of several simultaneous events. DAS 8000 has a main CPU board and it can be equipped with / up to 8 independent acquisition boards. Each board, which corresponds to one single channel, has its own system for acquisition: 1 MHz A/D converter and the memory, which guarantees the storage of 8000 (optionally 16000) data points. The 8 channels are synchronized and the acquisition starts at the same instant - the trigger system is the same for all the acquisition channels. The modular structure described above makes this system for acquisition of instrumented impact data very versatile and suitable to the different needs of advanced laboratories, which are interested not only in monitoring the force during the impact event but also in the analysis of other specific aspects involved in the impact test.

PROCESSING (LSI), SPECIMEN PREPARATION AND TEST METHODS:

The instrument used to perform instrumented impact is quiet similar to drop weight machines [2]. It is usually equipped with a piezoelectric or strain gauge load cell.

Carbon Reinforced, SiC matrix composites are processed using Liquid Silicon infiltration (LSI) Method. LSI is the relatively quicker process when compared with chemical vapour impregnation(CVI) and polymer impregnation processes (PIP), wherein a porous carbon-carbon composite is infiltrated with liquid silicon at 1500-1600oC in inert atmosphere. These composites can be made by controlling various process parameters such as Fiber Volume Fraction, Fiber Matrix Interface and the extent of conversion of molten silicon into silicon carbide, which govern the mechanical properties like fracture toughness[3]. The standard specimens are prepared with the composition shown in Table1.

After preparing the specimens (C-SiC) as per the required composition shown in table1, they are cut into required sizes according to ASTM D256 [4] standards (Figure 2). The Izod impact tests were conducted using CEAST Fractovis drop weight instrumented impact tester with a DAS 8000 data acquisition system.

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS:

Force-displacement curves: A typical F-d curve recorded in the impact test is shown in figure 3. First of all, when the striker touches the specimen the impact point is immediately accelerated from zero velocity to the initial velocity of the striker. This instantaneous acceleration, for the Newton’s second law, causes a first peak of force named inertial peak (because of the inertial nature of this phenomenon). After this strong oscillation force increases linearly. At low displacements, any material can be considered elastic, so that force is proportional to displacement (and therefore to time, if impact energy is high). When the specimen is affected by a great deflection, however, plastic deformation occurs: the load deformation curve deviates from linearity showing the characteristic yield region. Since the material chosen for test is C-SiC, which is very hard and brittle [5] there is no noticeable yield region. When the material approaches its maximum deflection, fracture occurs (if the striker energy is sufficient) and the measured force falls to zero. From the load displacement curve the evaluation is made on fracture toughness, i.e, the energy absorbed by the specimen during the fracture. The absorbed energy which is a measure of material strength and ductility can be graphically represented as the area beneath the load-displacement curve. Further, the impact strength is obtained by calculating the energy absorbed during fracture per unit cross sectional area of the specimen (Table 2).

In the specimens tested, a considerable fiber pullout is observed (Fig.4) indicating the increase of fracture toughness. The microstructure of the siliconised composite is shown in Fig.5 which clearly shows uniform silicon infiltration in the body.

CONCLUSIONS: An instrumented impact curve therefore gives rise to a lot of information about material properties. It is possible to carry out an integration of the load time curve to plot the more common load displacement curve. Since in most cases velocity and impact energy are very high, load time and load displacement curves are “interchangeable”. Also the information about the kind of fracture (brittle –ductile) is depicted graphically. The instrumented impact gives this information and provides a better characterization of the material in different test conditions (e.g. at different temperatures or loading rates).

Mrs. O. Hema Latha, joined as Assistant Professor in M.E.D. in February 2010. She pursued her B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from S.C.E.T., Hyderabad and post graduated/ M.E., in Automation and Robotics from Osmania

University, Hyderabad. She has over six years of teaching experience. Before joining M.J.C.E.T. she was working as Associate Professor in Shadan College of Engineering and Technology.

Mrs. S. Sahar Banu, joined as a Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department in February 2010. She acquired her B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from K.S.R.M. College of Engineering, Kadapa and

her post graduation in Thermal Engineering is from J.N.T.U., Hyderabad. She has three years of teaching experience and she also worked as AutoCAD Design Engineer in Cadsys India Ltd.

Mr. Rafiuzzama Shaik joined as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering Department in August 2010. He acquired his B.E. in Production Engineering from MJCET, Hyderabad in 1998 and completed his M.S. from the

BAJA SAE INDIA 2010:

SAE-MJCET, the first and the largest collegiate club in Andhra Pradesh, has certainly done more than said. Since its inception five years back, a series of high profile and intellectual events have made its history. MINI BAJA, the international competition has always been a target, but due to an alien environment and the distance of

the venue it never materialized. Now since SAE INDIA has taken the initiative and created BAJA INDIA, SAE-MJCET participated at ASIA level competition on "BAJA-All Terrain Vehicle Design and Fabrication”. The team cleared all the technical inspections and was appreciated for well versed implementation of new technology and new innovations made in the field of all terrain vehicle fabrications. The team was sponsored by Sultan – Ul- Uloom Educational Society (1.25 lakh) and Sujana Smart Steel (1.75 lakh).

Team MJCET at BAJA SAE INDIA 2010 in Peethampur.

The BAJA ASIA 2010 was scheduled from 29th to 31st January 2010 at NATRAX (National Automobile Test Tracks) facility of NATRIP (National Automotive Testing R&D infrastructure project) in Peethampur, near Indore, Madhya Pradesh., India. It has a specially prepared motocross race track, where ultimate endurance race takes place. The goal of the team was to design, model and analyze every part of the vehicle virtually before going into production, thus creating an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) that is safer, stronger, cheap, faster, with good maneuverability and easier to manufacture. The ATV manufactured will be tested under different elements of performance like brake test, acceleration test, hill climbing test, maneuverability test and endurance race. The overall mission is to have vehicles that will trek through outdoor terrain with ease. The 2010 team focused on minimizing the weight and improving driver comfort with strict adherence to the rule book, while maximizing the strength and minimizing the cost. Baja Asia 2010 being the 3rd competition of its kind in India, Team MJCET had the 3rd time experience to be a part of this majestic event. The Team MJCET had made best participation by finishing 26th place out of 173 team entries, scoring 537 points from 1000, which was the best performance up till the 3 years in the event. The team returned with a life time of experience and placement for some of the students in major Automobile Companies, making the three most unforgettable days in their history.

SAE-MJCET Achievements:

Convention: SAE INDIA, an affiliate of SAE International organized the SAE National Student convention 2010. The motto of the Convention 2010 was ‘Challenge ahead’. It

gave an opportunity to the students and collegiate clubs to showcase the achievements in the previous year. By means of conducting various competitions, SAE INDIA provided students with a platform to showcase student abilities in Technical knowledge, Design province, Fabrication skills, Problem solving capability. Conducted in 3-tiers, tier-1 at College level, tier-2 as ‘Mini Convention’ at the State level and tier-3 the Convention at the National level, it brought around 18000 student members across India. It provided a platform to the student members and the collegiate clubs for networking and to share experience. It provided students with 8 major competitions: 1) Technical Paper Presentation, 2) Aero Design and Fabrication, 3) Auto Quiz, 4) Modelling and Animation, 5) Computer Aided Manufacturing, 6) Computer Aided Analysis, 7) Graphic System Design and 8) Student Business Plan. The various teams, who won the college level competitions, were sent to state level competitions held at Kakatiya Institute of Engineering and Technology, Warangal. The Teams put on their best performance and made sure the flag of our MJCET was flying high and proved once again that we are the leaders of Andhra Pradesh. The various positions obtained by our college teams are as follows: 1. In the event “Technical Paper”, Mohd.Abdul Qayyum

& Abdul Wasay obtained the First Position. 2. In the event “Graphic System Design”, Mohd.Abdul

Qayyum, Habeeb Abdul Rahman & M.A.Waseem obtained the First Position.

3. In the event “Modelling and Animation”, S.Md.Ehatareen & Riyan Abdul Rehman obtained the Second Position.

4. In the event “Aero Modelling”, P.Imran Khan, Nayeem Dhanani & Ch.Satya Abhilash obtained the Third Position.

5. In the event “Auto Quiz”, Mohd.Abdul Qayyum, Abdul Wasay & Mohd.Umair Patny obtained the Third Position.

Students who won the State or Zonal level competitions were qualified to represent State Andhra Pradesh at National Level Convention held at JEPPIAAR Engineering College, Chennai. MJCET Students tried their best to prove their Mettle in various competitions mentioned above. Finally the team representing GRAPHICAL SYSTEM DESIGN won the THIRD Prize.

BAJA SAE INDIA 2011:

SAE-BAJA 2011 was scheduled from 29th-31st January 2011 and followed by placement drive on 1st & 2nd February 2011. This year Team MJCET was a team of 14 Automobile enthusiasts from Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Science Engineering Departments guided by the two Faculty Advisors Mr. A.S. Reddy, Associate Professor, M.E.D. and Mr. Mohd. Viquar Mohiuddin, Assistant Professor, M.E.D. The Team has been sponsored with 1.5 lakh from Sultan-Ul-Uloom Educational Society and 0.75 lakh from Vijai Electricals.

Learning from the mistakes of the previous team, the team had worked hard on the drive train system and the suspension & steering system. The team is a good blend of experience, theoretical knowledge and practical exposure. The team had used latest software and tried to keep it up with good implementation. The team made the cut of 80 out of 222 teams at the initial design presentation held at New Delhi on the 17th and 18th July 2010.

All Baja 2011 vehicles got lined up for final Endurance

race at NATRAX ground in Peethampur, M.P. At Baja SAE India 2011, Team MJCET vehicle was well appreciated by all technical inspectors for its design and aesthetics. The vehicle passed technical clearance inspection on the first day in the first attempt. It cleared brake test, acceleration test and gone through the Hill climbing event, but in maneuverability test the transmission failed and the team has to take the vehicle to pit area for repairs. Due to severe damage in transmission only temporary repairs were carried out and team managed to participate in final endurance race. During the second lap of endurance, the transmission broke down totally making it difficult to complete the race. And eventually the vehicle has to be taken out of the race tracks.

EWB (Engineers Without Borders):

EWB-MJCET Chapter has been established at Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology under the Society's Act, to involve young engineers, and other

professionals with special or general skills, in a movement of constructive change. It is inspired by an urgent concern for accelerating sustainable rural development, assisting in capacity building in backward rural and urban communities of India, protecting the country's natural resource base and working across national boundaries for social and economic justice and responsible use of technology.

1. Krushi Project:

KRUSHI HOME is a place for children in difficult circumstances, who are housed, educated and integrated with the main stream of the society (At Krushi, usage of the term "Street Children" is consciously avoided). Every effort is made to counsel and restore the children to their parents/relatives. Those children who cannot be restored to their parents / relatives, for various reasons, are retained in Krushi Home and educated, with the ultimate objective of making them self sufficient and responsible citizens. The effort has been fairly successful with almost all the boys going to schools / colleges or undergoing vocational training etc. It is presently is accommodating 80 children and 20 staff members to take care of the children. The Krushi home is located on an area of 2.3 acre land at Gowdavally village, near Medchal Mandal of Ranga Reddy District in Andhra Pradesh � Some Street children, specially the older ones, find the

regulated life in a home like Krushi hard to handle. In spite of adequate counseling and motivation, quite a few of them go back to their old ways.

� Even some of the long staying children do sometimes disappear for short periods only to come back and lead normal life.

KRUSHI HOME is constructed on the basis of go green in order to save the resources. It consists of five star rated electric equipments in order to increase the efficiency and to reduce the cost burden of electricity consumption.

Role of EWB-MJCET in Krushi Project:

There was an acute need of an alternate resource of electrical energy due to frequent power cuts and also due to high electricity bills, Infotech Enterprises had taken an initiative to set up a solar plant which can fulfill the needs of the Krushi home in collaboration with EWB MJCET in the month of Sept.-Oct. 2010.

The other activities which were carried along with the above mentioned major activity were electrical fittings and appliances replacement to energy efficient ones, to plan and execute a large scale plantation programme, which can improve the ecological condition at the Krushi home. The initiative was fully funded by overseas and Indian corporate and individual donors. The sponsors were, Infotech Enterprises, Ralph Noyes, Belcan, Engineers without Borders-India, MTU Aero Engines, Quest, Pratt and Whitney etc. The project was inaugurated on 13th October 2010. Certificates of appreciation were awarded to the students by Mr. Allan J. Brockett, Vice President, Engineering Module Centers, Pratt and Whitney – USA. 2. Fuel Briquettes as a Cooking Fuel:

In the current energy scenario, about 2 billion or 1/3rd inhabitants of the earth have no access to modern forms of fuel. Cooking fuel is a basic need. Poor availability and inability to pay for the same has compelled the poor to use wood, crop wastes in inefficient ways or fossil fuels which are heavily subsidized by the government cause serious environmental problems. We are providing an environment friendly alternative to traditional cooking fuels in rural India. This fuel is also cheaper than the conventional fuels and makes for an ideal fuel for the poor. EWB- India is promoting the use of Cooking Fuel Briquettes made from agricultural, industrial and domestic wastes. It is a cleaner fuel with low emissions. EWB-India conducted an information and training workshop in November 2008, which has ignited interest in participants who are keen to set up their own units in their local areas. Briquette technology is simple to understand and implement. It is emerging as a popular area for Small Enterprises. EWB- India aims to train NGO’s and other similar groups in a knowledge sharing exercise for widespread use of this technology and establishment of micro-enterprises. We are also researching ways in which an efficient and effective Briquette Technology Kit can be developed and delivered. EWB MJCET is currently on a project to invent a much simpler, easy to carry type fuel briquetting machine which can improve its productivity.

Events Organized by EWB-MJCET:

� On 15th Oct. 2009, EWB-MJCET chapter conducted an inaugural session, in which Prof. Aliuddin Ansari, Professor of M.E.D., M.J.C.E.T. President, EWB-International, Regional Director, Asia, has given an introductory seminar to the students of MJCET.

� On 11th March 2010, an event of promotional exhibition of EWB projects was organized by EWB-MJCET chapter.

� On 9th & 10th April, 2010 MUTATION 2010 - a technical fest was conducted by EWB chapter, in parallel with Students Technical Symposium of Mechanical Engineering Department.

ZEPHYR 2K11:

ZEPHYR 2K11, the Annual Technical fest of Engineers Without Borders MJCET chapter was held on 10th and 11th February, 2011 in Mechanical Engineering Department of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology. The two day extravaganza witnessed an overwhelming participation from MJCET and various other Engineering, Pharmacy, Degree and Junior colleges in and around Hyderabad and many participants among them bagged fabulous prizes. Participation Certificates were awarded to all the participants.

The fest was marked by all sorts of emotions like pride for victory, frustrations, joy and celebrations. The events conducted were Wiz Quiz, World through your window, Create havoc, Poster presentation, short film making and campaign for speechless, by the team of EWB MJCET. The students mainly involved in organizing the event are Mr. Zia Mohammed Khan, Mr. Mohammed Sufiyan, Mr. K. Ashish and Ms. Rachel Regina N. The fest was sponsored by Endura - Controls & Automation.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP - CELL

Festivity 2010: The E-Cell is a student body at MJCET, which was started in 2007. E-Cell was instituted to inculcate the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst the young college students who are also the future pillars of the global economy. Since inception, E-Cell has expanded massively in terms of its initiatives and membership, relying on its continuous association with the National Entrepreneurship Network (NEN). Along the way, E-Cell has received recognition for its achievements by initially being the National Runner-up in 2008 and then, the National Champion in 2009 at the

National Entrepreneurship Week. The National Entrepreneurship Week is an annual event with participation from over 600 leading educational institutions from across India. This week-long event is a celebration of the spirit of entrepreneurship through a plethora of activities ranging from panel discussions, awareness drives to cultural events. Not being able to participate in the National Entrepreneurship Week 2010 due to certain unavoidable circumstances, E-Cell kept the entrepreneurship spirit running by organizing the “Festivity 2010”. Festivity 2010 was held from 9th to 10th April, 2010 during which time five departmental fests were also held. These two days had a great concoction of fun and inspiration. The event began with a panel discussion, “The Summit”. The theme of the Summit was “INDIA - the opportunities within”. The panel consisted of four young entrepreneurs, all of whom have left an indelible mark in their respective entrepreneurial engagements. These “resolute visionaries” were: 1. Sunil Kumar, AP State Director, RDI. 2. Hemant Nitturkar, CII New India Ventures. 3. Ayesha Rubina, Education and Social Entrepreneur,

Director of Genesis. 4. A. Mujeeb Khan, Founding President, Bhumi

(Hyderabad). The panelists spoke at length about how India was the most favored destination for employment and that it was the greatest emerging hub for innovation and research. This changing paradigm is reversing the brain drain of the past by opening the window for the Indian youth to build great careers within the country. To think of it, one of the panelists had spent most of his formative career days abroad. Of particular mention was A. Mujeeb Khan, who seemed to be the most intriguing and inspiring. Mr. Khan is from the M.J.C.E.T., 1994 batch and is presently leading “Bhumi” – an NGO focusing on transformational leadership within the Indian setup. He started off his career with an advertising agency in Mumbai, after graduating from MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad). All along his distinguished career, Mr. Khan had plenty of experiences in different environments. Noteworthy is his stint as a dairy farmer for three years in a far-off Indian village. It is from this experience, he says, that he saw and experienced the ‘real’ India from close quarters. His talk was really inspiring for aspiring students and alike. On the sidelines of the Summit, there was an exciting line-up of different events, such as market your product, business quiz, idea generation, hand painting, verbal wars and many more. While these events were a great fun and learning experience, the event organizers had streamlined a number of cash awards for different event winners. The

festive atmosphere cannot be complete in Hyderabad without a good food spread and so there were numerous stalls put up at the venue catering to varied tastes. All in all, the event was a stupendous success. There is an earnest hope of seeing this rich legacy being carried forward by future students of M.J.C.E.T.

Entrepreneurship Week India 2011:

Entrepreneurship is not just a notion which fosters the ability to obtain profit generating idea, but it is also an effective tool which encourages people around to implement their ideas and innovations in one of the most satisfying manner. E- Week India, 2011 was hence an attempt to kindle the Spirit of Entrepreneurship in each individual. The fest started from 4th February and lasted till 11th February. It marked for the coming together of great Entrepreneurial and Technical minds thereby enabling an effective exchange of ideas varying in inception and execution. The first day of the week started with an E- Conference which had various Entrepreneurs giving their views on the current state and opportunities in various fields. This was followed by an Event ‘Case Study’ in which students were asked to come and present their solutions for the many famous and impending problems the world is facing today. The next day a panel discussion was organized. The panel consisted of people who have been endlessly working to make a difference in the various sections of the society. They presented their views as to how the concept of Entrepreneurship can profit the society as a large scale. Engineers innovate and Entrepreneurs validate. Keeping this idea in mind ‘Strategia’ an event aiming to bring together the ‘TecnoBiz’ minds, was organized. On the third day the first phase of this event was held asking participants to present their various technically oriented ideas. The next day these participants along with the many other people were enlightened with the idea of how technology can be exploited in today’s times to help the belief of Entrepreneurship through the ‘Tech Summit’. Every waste is bad until it is put to some good use. Keeping this in mind ‘Trash Hunt’ an event was a tailor made opportunity for the participants to exhibit their creative as well as marketing capabilities, by designing and conceptualizing their ideas, and then putting it up for sale. This event was held on the 4th day of E- Week. The second phase of ‘Strategia’ was organized the day after. On this day the various prototypes presented by the participants were displayed as a marketable asset by the various B-School Professionals. The last two days of the E- Week India, 2011 showcased a volley of events investigating the various facets of entrepreneurship in the society and inculcating this idea in every individual. Our efforts for the event got us the National Championship Runners up Trophy.

Hence the Entrepreneurship Week, 2011 was a celebration of the essence of one of the most important topic the world has been searching meaning for, since time immemorial. It brought to fore the idea that, no invention is perfect, if it cannot be thought about in terms of service it can give to others. An Entrepreneur just needs to put in efforts to find out what the world needs and then proceed to implement it.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering had organized a Two day Student Technical Symposium – “MECHALUTION 2KX” on 9th and 10th April, 2010 under the guidance of Mr. Shaik Khadar Vali as Convener and Mr. Mohammed Viquar Mohiuddin as Faculty Coordinator of the Symposium. The events organized were Dexter’s Lab, First Flight, Technical Paper Presentation, Techno Quiz, Test Ur Brain-memory Games, Drawing Board, Auto CAD, Solid Works, Technical Reasoning, etc. In a very short span of time, students have tried their level best to live up to the expectations. All the events were successful; the certificates were distributed to the winners and student organizers. The prize money distributed was Rs. 16,750/- among the winners of the events.

ADSOPHOS - 2011:

Adsophos 2011, a biannual fest, was organized by the students of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology belonging to various branches i.e.; Mechanical, Production, EEE, ECE, EIE, CSE, IT & Civil. All branches planned their own competitions independently and were carried out simultaneously on 10th and 11th February, 2011.

The organizing committee of the Mechanical department was headed by the faculty organizers Mr. Sadak Ali khan and Mr. Mohammed Viquar Mohiuddin; and the student organizers Mr. Mirza Azmathullah Baig and Mr. Mirza Khalilullah Baig. The students of mechanical department showcased a wide variety of technical events such as PAPER PRESENTATION, DEXTER’S LAB, JUNKYARD WARS, TECHNO QUIZ, AUTOCAD and SOLID WORKS. These events were so designed so as to test the non-scholastic skills of the students. Though the events were organized by the students, the judging was done by well experienced faculty members in a planned and orderly

manner. This further enriched the learning experience of the student participants, both from this college as well as other colleges. Out of the various events carried out, paper presentation and Dexter’s Lab were the most prominent ones which gave the participants a chance to display their soft skills as well as technical expertise. Based on the judging, the winners were awarded with cash prizes and certificates. The prize money distributed was Rs. 20,750/- in cash and Rs. 47,400/- in form of Coupons. Most of the events had multiple rounds to ensure that the participating teams use a range of diverse skills rather than one. This made the event both learning and entertaining. Thus, the Adsophos 2K11 fest gave an opportunity to the students to identify and hone their various talents by getting them into a competitive spirit thereby increasing their overall intellect.

ALUMNI MEET 2011

MJCETAA - Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology Alumni Association have organized its Annual Alumni Meet on 22nd January 2011 in Ghulam Ahmed Auditorium of MJCET. This event was an opportunity for the Alumni to gather at the college and meet their faculty and friends. In this event a banquet was also arranged in honor of the alumni of the college. This year Alumni Association has felicitated the students of 1982-1986 batch for their completion of 25 years of engineering. The Association also felicitated the staff members who taught this batch to recognize the services rendered by them to the college and its students especially to the batch of 1986. From Mechanical engineering department Associate Professor Mr. A.S.Reddy was felicitated for completion of 25 years of his service and Lab technician Mr. Mohd. Rafathullah was felicitated for his Superannuation retirement.

There are times in life, when you think that the road ahead is far too easy for your liking, when no challenge seems interesting and you want to make a difference. Well, one such occasion we got together and decided that it was time to Gamble Big... As Engineers, we were often termed as brilliant by friends, family and faculty. But what we did, never seemed difficult enough for our liking. At the offset, let me clarify that we are no geniuses; neither are we boasting about what we did. All we are saying, is we dreamed to make it BIG. We wanted to do something that would make heads turn towards us, outside our circle of influence. A feeling that makes you like the man you see in the mirror, and to be someone one who is respected and loved alike. Dreaming is one thing, working towards it is another. Especially when you don’t even know, what is it that you are going to do? When you are down and out with a question, which has no straight and simple answer, you have to look up to the skies...God Has His own way of

delivering messages, when we did look up, we saw a Chopper hovering over the city & the rest as they say is history! I recall the expression on my face, when my friend said, this is it! We are going to make a Chopper, an American Chopper; one that this city has never seen, a ride that no one here has ever taken & to make it BIG, we will do it Old style. When I heard it first, I did not bother to react. The thought to me was as crazy as someone telling me; we are going to build a road to Moon! It sounded impossible! But the thought kept growing, till it became an idea. We realized that it was going to be difficult, extremely difficult, and that was precisely the reason we decided to GAMBLE BIG. All Big things begin small; we started off with sketches and designs, inspired from every model that we could find. The Internet came to our rescue. Here, we were missing an important factor, we may have had the engineering skills for the task ahead, but designing is the work of an artist. We needed a hand, and we found just the Right one. The third of our crew joined & did the sketching for us. After running through a whole bunch of papers and boxes of pencils, this is how the final sketches looked.

Our grey cells were now working in overdrive. The sketches were ready; but engineering the same was the task of a lifetime. The unconventionally long forks in the sketch presented two major challenges: maneuverability and stability. Solid works (CAD software) helped us test the geometry & dynamics for the same. With all the data & statistics ready, it was time to convert the fictional components to reality. The one thing that all three of us were clear about right from the onset was that, we were going to do this Old school. This added to the aesthetic quality and compounded the engineering woes! Gamble big was meant to rule the roads, hence the components needed to be just right. I’m not exaggerating when I say that finding each part was like looking for a needle in a haystack. What made it more challenging is that we did not compromise on the quality of material & labour. Just to illustrate, Jig boring was used for Triple tees instead of a regular drilling; Surface grinding & cylindrical grinding were applied, instead of regular grinding, to ensure a smooth and lustrous finish. Precision was the key word. Fender mountings, seat and tank mountings were disguised to ensure the aesthetic quality remained intact. Since this was a custom design, most components needed to be

manufactured in house, right from the seat , tank to the foot pegs! The challenge that we faced here was to infuse our passion and commitment to every person that helped making the components. While I tell you about the design, let me not forget the impressive power & unique specifications of this beast! Gamble Big is equipped with a 350 cc, 19 BHP air cooled engine aligned on a modified Bullet chassis per design requirements. It comes with a 4 speed transmission and boasts of a top speed of 120Kmph. The bike deals with the road on an 110Front and a 130Rear tyre. The exhaust is self fabricated & beats like a true classic. Impressive Laser inscription, a classic design, a custom paint job add the beauty to this beast...

An excerpt from an interesting lecture by an IIM professor:

Who sells the largest number of cameras in India? Your guess is likely to be Sony, Canon or Nikon. Answer is none of the above. The winner is Nokia whose main line of business in India is not cameras but cell phones. Reason being cameras bundled with cell phones are outselling stand alone cameras. Try this. Who is the biggest in music business in India? You think it is HMV sa re ga ma? Sorry. The answer is Airtel. By selling caller tunes Airtel makes more money than what music companies make by selling music albums. Incidentally Airtel is not in the music business. It is the mobile service provider with the largest subscriber base in India. That sort of competition is difficult to detect, even more difficult to beat. By the time you have identified him, he has already gone past you. These kinds of wars are raging all over the world. Hiding behind all these wars is a gem of a question-“who is my competitor”? Once in a while, to intrigue my students, I toss a question at them-what Apple did to Sony, Sony did to Kodak. Explain? The smart ones get the answer immediately. Sony defined its

market as audio (walkman). They never expected an IT company like Apple to encroach into their audio domain. Come to think of it, is it really surprising? Apple as a computer maker has both audio and video capabilities. So what made Sony think he won’t compete on pure Audio? So also Kodak defined its business as film cameras. Sony defines its business as digital. In digital cameras the two markets It did not ask the question “who is my competitor for tomorrow?” The point is not who is today’s competitor .today’s competitor is obvious. Tomorrow’s not. One last illustration.20 years back what were Indians using to wake them in the morning? The answer is alarm clock. The alarm clock was a monster made of mechanical springs. It had to be physically keyed up every day to keep it running. it made so much noise by way of alarm, that it not only woke you up, but the rest of the neighborhood too. What do we use today for waking up in the morning? Cell phone!! an entire industry of clocks disappeared without warning thanks to cell phones. Big watch companies are the losers, you never know around which corner your competitor is lurking! Future is scary. The boss of an IT company once said something interesting about the animal called competition. He said “have breakfast …or…be breakfast!” That sums it up rather neatly.

Automotive Engineer Vs. Vanilla Ice Cream

A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors: "This is the second time I have written you, and I don't blame you for not answering me, because I kind of sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night. But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we've eaten the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it. It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy vanilla ice cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine. I want you to know I'm serious about this question, no matter how silly it sounds: 'What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?'" The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start. The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, the man got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.

Now the engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And toward this end he began to take notes: he jotted down all sorts of data, time of day, type of gas used, time to drive back and forth, etc. In a short time, he had a clue: the man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to find the flavor and get checked out. Now the question for the engineer was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time. Once time became the problem -- not the vanilla ice cream -- the engineer quickly came up with the answer: vapor lock. It was happening every night, but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapor lock to dissipate. Moral of the story: Even insane looking problems are sometimes real. By Akram Hussain, (B.E.-2/4 M.E.D.)

In some foreign country a priest, a lawyer and an engineer are about to be guillotined. The priest puts his head on the block, they pull the rope and nothing happens -- he declares that he's been saved by divine intervention -- so he's let go. The lawyer is put on the block, and again the rope doesn't release the blade, he claims he can't be executed twice for the same crime he is set free too. They grab the engineer and shove his head into the guillotine, he looks up at the release mechanism and says, “Wait a minute, I see your problem......”

A Three Day National Workshop on

“Recent Advances in Mechanical Engineering” (RAIME -2KX)

RAIME - 2KX was organized by department of Mechanical Engineering, M.J.C.E.T., during 27th to 29th December, 2010. The workshop focused on the recent advances and emerging trends in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The Convener of this Workshop was Mr. Shaik Shafee, Sr. Assistant Professor, M.E.D. and the organizing secretaries were Mr. Mohammed Mohinoddin & Mr. Mohammed Anwarullah, Sr. Assistant Professors, M.E.D., M.J.C.E.T.

Principal, M.J.C.E.T., addressed the gathering and released the souvenir. Dr. V. Vasudeva Rao, Principal, S.N.I.S.T., was the Chief Guest, and also gave an illuminating lecture on Heat & Fluid flow, Dr. Sri Ram Venkatesh, Chairman, B.O.S., O.U., who was the Guest of Honour gave very informative lecture on Rapid Prototyping Technology.

In the afternoon session Dr. L. Shyam Sunder, SNIST gave lecture on Nanofluids, Dr. A. K. Prasad Rao, S.N.I.S.T.

presented a lecture on Metallurgy, and Dr. K.N. Krishnan, M.J.C.E.T. had given a lecture on Heat Transfer in Electrical machines.

On Day 2, an industrial visit was arranged to M/s. Mahindra & Mahindra, Automotive division, Zaheerabad where the

delegates were taken around the plant and shown the various aspects of Automobile Manufacturing. On Day 3, in the morning session Dr. R.S. Reddy, Principal, CMRCE gave lecture on application of heat pipes in

industry, Mr. A. Rajendra Prasad, A.G.M., B.H.E.L, on Air cooled condenser and Dr. V. N. Mani, scientist F, C.M.E.T., Hyderabad on Nano-electronics.

In the final session Dr. P. Ravinder Reddy, C.B.I.T., the Chief Guest of the Valedictory function, gave a lecture on

Design Optimization.
