Baronial L etterGreetings to the fair populace of Forgotten Sea from Their Excellencies Logan andYlva.

So much ha s happened in the months since our last letter! We have a new Kingand Quee n. We have had several local events. We have had more demos than inour entire p receding tenure! And the turnout and support from all of you has beenfantastic. O ur thanks to everyone who has participated.

And your activities have not been limited to events. The monthly "knit night" at thefirst populace meeting of each month has continued, as has the Persian dancing.The idea of turning the making of event tokens into a pewter casting class seemsto have been a big hit the past few months, proving once again that Calontiri wantto know how to DO stuff, not just own stuff.

Several improvements to the Baronial website ( www.bfs-kc.org ) have happenedthis summer. There is now an online Baronial award recommendation form. Youcan find it by clicking the "Officers" link. It is in the section about Us. Please let usknow who you think deserves recognition.

There is also a fabulous new section called "Articles and How-To Guides." Itcontains all the articles that have been published in the Clarion for the past severalyears. They have been groups by subject, making it even easier to find somethingyou might be interested in. One thing I noticed is how you can see someone'sprogression by the changing of their title on different articles (e.g. some by HLGwen and others by Mistress Gwen). What other trivia can you find? We highlyrecommend that you check out the web site periodically. New stuff is showing upall the time. (Keep an eye out for an online Baronial Order of Precedence listcoming soon!)

Speaking of digital changes, during the rest of the year the way the Baronydistributes emails is going to change. We are going to consolidate all the variousgroups and email lists down to two: an announcements list and a discussion list.The announcement list will be open to anyone joining without any vetting process,but it will be for outgoing messages only. This way people searching Yahoo groups

will be able to find a list they can join immediately and see archivedannouncements as well as receive future information. They won't have to requestaccess and then wait for someone to determine who they are. We also won't haveto moderate that list, since only approved people (Baronial and canton seneschals,web minister, chronicler, etc) will be able to post messages.

The discussion list will still be vetted, meaning that anyone wanting to join will haveto ask for permission and give some indication of who they are to preventspambots from joining the list. This list will allow any member to post, and is where

discussions of any topic of interest to the Barony (and not necessarily SCA or history related) can take place. It will be a moderated list, so any discussions thatget out of hand will be dealt with (as will multiple offense perpetrators).

Everyone who is currently on any of the Baronial lists will get an invitation to jointhe new lists once they are set up. You still have to join to get the email, but if youare invited, you don't have to wait for approval.

All other lists (with the exception of the Aston Tor and Loch Smythe specific lists)will be disabled. They aren't really in use anyway, so we are expecting no one tonotice.

Finally, by the time this is published, you may already be aware that Our fair barony has been challenged by the Uppity Baroness of Mag Mor. It seems shetook offense at an off-hand comment His Excellency made about Her failing hisspear at Cattle Raids, and she wants satisfaction. She has publicly disparaged thestate of readiness of Forgotten Sea to protect Calontir, and challenged Us to proveour prowess. To that end there will be combat at Toys for Tots. The first challengewill be a 6 on 6 melee consisting of one knight (His Excellency), one huscarl (Our

Champion Martus), two fyrdmen and two men at arms. Each team will provide 10toys, and the winner will get to claim all 20 toys for their count in the TfT total.

Another challenge will pit all right noble fighters wishing to fight for Forgotten Sea



against all those base fellows tricked into fighting for Mag Mor. The onlyrequirement to fight is the donation of toys above and beyond the toy you mustdonate to attend the event: one for men-at-arms and fyrdmen, two for knights andhuscarls, and three for royal peers. So come and fight and uphold the honor of Forgotten Sea.

And here's the fun part. I would like for anyone participating to wear the rattiest,most worn green or white fighting gear they can find. Our weapons should be legaland safe, but as ugly and beat-up as possible. After all, it was the state of aweapon that started all this, and we should prove that it is NOT the state of theweapon, but that of the wielder that matters most.

So keep safe and warm as the season turns, and we look forward to seeing you atupcoming events, the Tor Murder Mystery and Kris Kinder especially.

Many people had a chance to taste the lovely stew made by Her Excellency Ylva atthe Kansas City Renaissance Festival demo and interest was expressed in therecipe. The recipe is originally titled Bess' Oven Stew.

- 350 for 2 1/2 hours -

5 lbs of beef - trimmed & cubed into bite-sized pieces2 large onions, chopped2lbs of carrots, chopped1 medium turnip, peeled & chopped3 lbs potatoes, washed & chopped1/3 cup flour



1/2 cup soy sauce12 beef bullion cubes1 cup red cooking wine

Line the bottom of a lidded roasting pan (or heavy foil roaster with foil for lid) withthe onions, then spread over that the meat. Sprinkle with the flour. Layer thecarrots, turnip and potatoes. Add the soya sauce, bullion and wine then water untilit just covers the vegetables. Cover & bake for 2 hours at 350 - then stir and bakeanother 1/2 hour.

Reheats VERY well, but freezing is no friend to the potatoes.

I Have Fought -------------This past Gulf Wars (2012) was my first time at a foreign war, and while there I wasstruck by something, something unique about Calontir.

Where is the Trimeran army? Why, there they are, the ones in armor there on thefield.

Where is the Calontir army? Why, they are the ones on the field, in armor.

And those bringing us water and pickles and biscuits.

And those who stayed behind in camp to make soup and sandwiches for when wereturn.

And those who stand on the sidelines cheering us on.

And our archers who shoot for war point, clad in the same tabards as the fighters.

And Calontir Steel, adding their own brand of glory to our Kingdom.

And our Equestrians, who keep alive the skills that blend man and beast into asingle, powerful fighting unit.

And our craftsfolk who compete to show their prowess and whose works add to thebeauty and honor of Calontir.

And even those who could not make it to the war, but who cheer us on from afar,

helping where they can, supplying tabards and clothing and enthusiasm even fromafar.

And the Bards who supply inspiration and song, for we are Calontir, the Kingdomthat sings. Together. As one.

The Calontir Army is all of us, and from that comes our strength.



Freedom's Crusade-----------------In the year 555, the Saxons in what is modern-day Germany were vassals,

conquered by the Merovingian Dynasty of what would become the Frankish nation.The King who ruled over them was Theodebald of the Merovingian Dynasty, a boyof ill health who had come to the throne at the age of thirteen.



Only twenty years old, his health finally failed him -- and the Saxons chose themoment of his death to rise up against the Frankish.

I wrote this as their call to arms.

Until the 14th century, when mechanical tower clocks appear in cities across Europe, the peopleof the Middle Ages used unequal-length hours that changed with the seasons.

The daylight part of the day was divided into 12 equal parts, as was the nighttime. This meant adaytime hour in June was much longer than a daytime hour in January.

A sundial, after all, measures time this way. Its shadowmoves from dawn to noon each day whether it takesfour hours or eight hours to travel that distance. The sixhours from dawn to noon, therefore, are one-sixth of thetime elapsed and equal 60 of our minutes only twice ayear.

The differences were often significant. In northernEurope, an hour of daylight could be three times as longas an hour of nighttime.

Although water clocks could measure equal hours, theywere “corrected” so that their hours matched theseasonal, unequal hours that sundials showed.

To put this in modern terms, listed below are themodern clock times for the summer and winter solsticesin the area around London, or in northern Europe fromBrussels in the east to Dresden in the west (roughly the50 th parallel). The canonical hours are the ones in useduring the 6 th century. On the equinoxes, Terce would be about 9 am, Sext would be noon andNone would be 3 pm.

Did You Know?

That in 1152, during the war between King Stephen and Matilda, or “Empress Maud,” in England,John fitz Gilbert sent his five year old son, William, to King Stephen as a hostage to guarantee a

truce.

When John the Marshal violated the terms of that truce, Stephen’s entourage “urged him to hangWilliam at once.” Kind-hearted Stephen, whose gallantry in battle once cost him his freedom untilhe was ransomed, “was unwilling to execute a child without giving his father a chance to save him.…”

Stephen had John called to the walls of his besieged castle and reminded him his actions meant thedeath of his son. “But John Marshal, having four sons and a fruitful wife, considered the youngestof his sons of far less value than a strong castle.” Then he cheerfully told the king’s messenger “that he had the anvils and hammers to forge still better sons.”

When King Stephen heard this “brutal reply,” he ordered William to be brought to a tree. Stephenaccompanied the boy himself, with a sizeable number of men, in case John would try some kind of rescue. The young William had no idea what the parade of fighting men meant. “When he sawWilliam, earl of Arundel, twirling a most enticing javelin, he asked for the weapon.”

This “reminder of William’s youth and innocence” was too much for the king. “Taking the boy inhis arms, he carried him back to camp.” The king vetoed another plan to catapult the child over the

castle walls. In fact, Stephen played games with the child and from that point on, treated him as anhonored guest. If Stephen’s sympathy for a child’s plight hadn’t stayed William’s execution, henever would have grown up to become William the Marshal, flower of chivalry.
