2009, will be revamped to allow theprocessing of ethylene feedstock froma nearby Mitsubishi Chemical plant toproduce surfactants for construction, toiletry and civil engineeringapplications. Surfactant units will alsobe renovated at the Chiba site in2010. At the Yokkaichi site, new resinemulsion plants will replace old ones. The Oppama site will be dedicated tothe production of solvents and theTokuyama plant will focus onmanufacturing disproportionated rosinsoap for the emulsion polymerizationof synthetic rubbers.

Surfactant: new from Chemguard
Chemguard’s S-764P is a short-chain, phosphate ester-derivedproduct that can compete withcurrently available longer-chainperfluoro-based products in terms ofsurface activity, without the need forincreased concentration levels.Potential uses include waxes, paintand metal plating.

Clariant turns spotlight on protectionand preservation at in-cosmetics 2010
Exciting concepts and new productinnovations designed to helpformulators perfect the performanceand efficiency of their cosmeticformulations formed the focus ofClariant’s “protecting and preserving”theme at in-cosmetics 2010 in Parisfrom 13 to 15 Apr 2010, booth M30.Clariant promises sunnier times forthe sun care market with the launchof its Sun Care Concept. TheConcept offers easy to process andtimesaving formulations, and UVperformance-boosting raw materialsthat provide the perfect basis forsunscreen formulations. Visitors toBooth M30 were the first to see thebenefits of Clariant’s “integratedpreservation concept” – a package ofsolutions to effectively preserve andviscosify cosmetic formulations withadded cost-effective and “green”
focused benefits for formulators. These include Velsan SC, a 100%natural, synergistic aid; a newthickening agent, Aristoflex TAC; anda new water-in-silicone/water-in-oilemulsifier, SilCareSilicone WSI. Neweffective preservative blends, preservative efficacy boosters andrheology modifiers are integrated toprovide formulators with effectivealternatives that preserve, andprovide thickening and other aestheticbenefits in difficult to achieve low pHformulations.

New Hyper-HASE polymer for difficult-to-thicken surfactant systems
Noveon Consumer Specialties of TheLubrizol Corp introduces Novethix L-10 polymer, a new hyper-HASEsolution for difficult-to-thickensurfactant systems. The newNovethix L-10 polymer thickens andcontrols the rheology of challengingsurfactant cleansing systems such asmild, sulfate/amide-free shampoosand facial cleansers or very lowsurfactant content formulations foreconomy markets. A highly efficient, hydrophobically modified, alkali-swellable emulsion polymer designedfor structuring most cleansingformulations containing anionic, nonionic and zwitterionic surfactants,Novethix L-10 polymer is also a costeffective improvement over manynonionic thickeners. It workssynergistically with electrolytes and isan easy-to-use, cold-processableliquid. Novethix L-10 polymerovercomes deficiencies generallyfound in surfactant systemscontaining nonionic thickeners, suchas poor viscosity reproducibility, jelly-like flow aesthetics and instabilitywhen stored at elevatedtemperatures. Nonionic thickenersoften require controlled heating andcooling protocols to achieveformulation reproducibility. SinceNovethix L-10 polymer is an aqueousdispersion, formulations can be coldprocessed without the need for heatand long mixing times. The shear-thinning rheology of Novethix L-10polymer provides smooth, honey-likeflow and excellent temperaturestability. Novethix L-10 polymer
delivers aesthetically pleasing,smooth-textured flow properties andhigh clarity in a wide variety ofcleansing applications. It can be usedto create economy (low surfactant)clear or pearlized body washes andshampoos, and mild, sulfate-free,amide-free shower gels, shampoosand facial cleansers.

Personal care
Momentive introduces Silsoft AXconditioning agent and Tospearl AQmicrospheres; advanced personal carematerials
On 10 Mar 2010, MomentivePerformance Materials announcedtwo new personal care products:Silsoft AX conditioning agent andTospearl AQ microspheres. Thesebreakthrough materials, which areavailable globally, are anotherexample of Momentive’s heritage:almost 70 years of being first tomarket with technology-basedsolutions that positively impact andimprove everyday life. Silsoft AXconditioning agent can helpmanufacturers of hair care productsoffer enhanced sleekness, shine andmanageability for hair. In hair careformulations, the molecular structureof Silsoft AX conditioning agent maysignificantly enhance the smoothnessand softness of damaged andundamaged hair, without stickiness orgreasiness, while improving colourretention. The INCI name of SilsoftAX conditioning agent is bis-cetearylamodimethicone. Tospearl AQmicrospheres can provide a smootherand silkier sensory experience, enhanced blurring of fine lines andwrinkles, and improved rub-in forwater-based skincare formulations, sunscreens, antiageing products andmoisturizers. Stable at low pH,Tospearl AQ microspheres are coatedwith a cationic polymer. Due to thiscoating, the product can beincorporated easily into the waterphase of oil-in-water emulsions. The
