Hunting: • Hunting will be expanded in the park. Bow hunting will be expanded west of Route 9D and shotgun/muzzleloading hunting will be allowed on the Northeast Fishkill Ridge area, the former Rodman parcel.
Overnight Accommodations: • Overnight accommodations at the former University Settlement Camp will be encouraged and supported by OPRHP. The former University Settlement Camp is managed by the City of Beacon through a management agreement with OPRHP.
Visitor Center: • A new visitor center will be developed off of Route 9D just south of the City of Beacon on the former Woodle property. The visitor center will also provide some environmental and cultural education and interpretation opportunities, office space and restrooms. • A new parking lot will be developed at this location that will accommodate approximately 60 cars.
Denning’s Point: • Denning’s Point will have improved public access by improving parking on the point; the agreement with the Beacon Institute will be revisited to help with the future management of the Point and achieving the goal of improving public access. • The bridge over the railroad tracks requires replacement and OPRHP will begin discussions with the MTA regarding the bridge.
Designations: • Hudson Highlands will be designated as a Park Preserve. • A Natural Heritage Area will be designated as well as a second Bird Conservation Area.
Little Stony Point: • The existing parking lot will be formalized and redesigned to improve the parking situation. • OPRHP will work with DOT to improve signage along Route 9D and to develop a crosswalk across Route 9D. • The existing trail system will be improved and trails will be reconstructed or rehabilitated as needed.
Natural Resource Management: • Management strategies for the following have been developed and will be implemented: Invasive Species, Summit Communities, Rare and Endangered Species, Constitution Marsh, Deer, and Landscape/Scenic.
Cultural Resource Interpretation: • A historic resource inventory will be developed for the facility. Once the inventory is completed, the historic resources identified will be interpreted and protected to preserve the history of the park and region. • It is recommended that a nomination be prepared for the former University Settlement Camp as it is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
Arden Point: • A new informational kiosk will be placed near the trailhead at Arden Point and the area will be cleared out to better define the entrance to the trail.
North Redoubt: • The plan recommends that lands adjacent to the trail head be acquired. This will improve access to the trails and will provide an established parking area that is away from the road.
