Hello Claremont! Can you believe that this summer, like no other, is coming to a close and that we will soon be coming back together as a school family? I hope that you have enjoyed your time off and that you are beginning to prepare for a full-remote start to the school year! We sure do miss you! It is therefore with pleasure that we share with you our 2020-2021 School Theme.

Clare & Monte, our school mascots, are gearing up to continue their work in helping all students to strive to be PAWSITIVE at CES and have designed a set of virtual learning expectations for all students to follow.

A Message from Vice Principal Madlen Rizkalla

Hello CES Families! I hope that your summer has been restful and that you have had the opportunity to spend quality time with your family during this unique time. The theme for the 2020-2021 school year reminds us to pause, be centered, and create a balance within our “new normal.” For me, as for many working parents, the balance is between my family and work. What centers me is focusing on what is important and truly living in the moment. This year will continue to have something new for all of us to experience. I truly look forward to the day where I see all of your smiling faces back in the building!

A Message from Vice Principal Nikkii Tatum

Hello CES Families! I hope that you all had a restful summer and were able to spend some quality time with your families. I know this school year is beginning very differently than what we are used to, but we can take this opportunity to see how resilient we can be in the midst of adjusting to our “new normal.” While working remotely, in alignment with this year’s theme, I educated myself in ways to ensure my own self-care through mindful movement and rest which has helped me “find my balance.” I can’t wait to share all that I’ve learned with the students and staff at CES! Although navigating remote learning will be challenging for all of us, find solace in knowing that we will get through these uncertain times together. We are stronger together! Claremont Strong!

Keep a Routine Since changes in routine can be stressful, it will be helpful to talk with your kids about why they are staying home and what your daily structure will be during this time. Let them help create a daily schedule that can hang on the refrigerator or somewhere they can see it each day. Be sure to include breaks from tele-work or schoolwork to relax and connect with each other. Here are some ideas to help you create a daily schedule:

• Wake up, get dressed and have breakfast at a normal time.

• Decide where everyone can do their work most effectively and without distractions.

• List the times for learning, exercise and breaks. o For younger children, 20 minutes of class

assignments followed by 10 minutes of physical activity might work well.

o Older children and teens may be able to focus on assignments for longer stretches, taking breaks between subjects.

Conversations About Remote Learning

Address the Physical Aspects of Learning at Home • Let your child pick out their school space at home

and help set it up. • Create different seating options for your child using

items you have at home. For example, office chair, beanbag, stool, the floor or allow them to stand.

• Provide a second workspace to give your child the ability to change environmrnts.

• Make sure both you and your student are taking breaks, where you walk away from work.

• Give your child recess, play or PE time during the day. Physical activity is an important part of supporting overall health and offers both cognitive and emotional benefits.

Social, Emotional, & Physical Health At least half an hour of daily outdoor time and physical activity is important for maintaining mental health for both kids and adults. And it’s also important for parents to have open conversations with children about the things they miss: Maybe they are sad the the school play or spring sport has been canceled, or they feel disappointed about missing an eagerly anticipated field trip or birthday party. Giving kids room to vent about their difficult feelings is the priority, rather than trying to fix” the situation.
