  • Symptoms Physical development is often slower than normal and most children never reach their average adult height. Flat face Small broad nose Abnormally shaped ears Large tongue Upward slanting eyes with small folds of skin in the corners
  • Slide 3
  • Symptoms Children may also have delayed mental and social development. Mental retardation Impulsive behavior Poor judgment Short attention span Slow learning

  • How do people get Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is caused by nondisjunction, where a pair of number 21 chromosomes fails to separate during the formation of an egg (or sperm).
  • Slide 5
  • How do people get Down Syndrome? When that egg unites with a normal sperm to form an embryo, that embryo ends up with 3 copies of chromosome 21 instead of the normal 2. The extra chromosome is then copied in every cell of the babys body.

  • Put it Down on Me? Those whom Down Syndrome isnt inhibiting, can lead a fairly normal life. They can go to school and play with their friends. However they generally are required to make many trips to the doctors office to be screened for various complications of trisomy 21.
  • Slide 8
  • Life for Family Members The majority of families share that they are stronger and closer as a result of the experience of dealing with a disability. Children with siblings with down syndrome often exhibit a level of maturity above that of their peers
  • Slide 9
  • How to get UP How is the Disease Treated? There is no treatment and preventative measure for Down Syndrome. The various effects must each be treated on a case by case basis whether it be through surgery, antibiotic, or healthy life style.
  • Slide 10
  • John Langdon Down Jerome Lejeune Described the symptom in 1866 and the genetic disorder is name after him Identified the disorder as trisomy 21 after karyotyping was established in 1959 History of Down Syndrome
  • Slide 11
  • Famous People Some notable people who had Down Syndrome were Chris Burke, Jason Kingsley, and Karen Gaffney. There was even a tiger with Down Syndrome
  • Slide 12
  • DOWN SYNDROME IS REALLY THE ONLY TRISOMY COMPATIBLE WITH LIFE. IN 90% OF TRISOMY 21 CASES, THE ADDITIONAL CHROMOSOME COMES FROM THE MOTHERS EGG RATHER THAN THE FATHERS SPERM. DOWN SYNDROME IS THE MOST COMMON GENETIC DISORDER CAUSED BY A CHROMOSOMAL ABNORMALITY. IT AFFECTS 1 OUT OF EVER 800 TO 1,000 BABIES. THE FREQUENCY OF DOWN SYNDROME CORRELATES WITH THE AGE OF THE MOTHER: THE OLDER THE EXPECTANT MOTHER, THE INCREASED CHANCE DOWN SYNDROME OCCURS IN THE CHILD. FACTS Down Syndrome
