• This article discussed a research study done with three different history classes. In each one of the schools where the survey was done technology was not used. The overall response was, “classes used digital technology in the belief that they knew better than their teacher how to pursue a school information-focused agenda”(Lacina, 2009).

• “In neither case, however, was there any indication of a fertile human-computer partnership, envisioned as the desired form of learning for the digital age”(Lacina, 2009). This quote shows that at times technology does not benefit the classroom. It is imperative to use technology where it can be beneficial and not just use it because it is available.

My ThoughtsMy Thoughts• I find this article interesting because I did not

start using technology in the classroom until about fifth grade and remembering sharing computers in the classroom that were not up to date. However, today technology is everywhere and I think that young people do understand a great deal of it better than their elders because they have grown up with it. The quote from a few slides earlier really stood out to me because I think this is a thought that most students think many times throughout their education.

• This article discusses the use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom. Today, this is an option all over the world. Great Britian and London both half about half of their classrooms equipped with an interactive whiteboard. In the United States areas are beginning to spend thousands of dollars in order to have these boards in the classroom. Still, there is the question, is it worth it?

• After look into cost and education, this particular author, Jan Lacina, finds it more important to have smaller classrooms with a more intimate learning atmosphere. As much as the whiteboards may be helpful, they need to be used in the particular areas of learning they can be beneficial. There are certain subjects that would benefit a great deal from whiteboards while others would put little to no use to them.

Personal ThoughtsPersonal Thoughts• After reading this article I realized the expense

that goes into technology. In order to have an up to date classroom with state of the art technology would cost a great deal of money. In addition, to keep that classroom up to date with all the emerging technology would be almost impossible. I now see that, as a teacher, I will have to pick a choose certain technologies to have in my classroom and will need to research and think about the benefits that will come from each one.

• This paper reviewed federal involvement in educational technology over the last fifty years. In particular, it analyzed fived programs that either had direct legislation or significant funding from the government. The research concluded that the most successful programs were those that had federal help with playing a role and design. It also concluded that without federal help these particular programs would not have reached the amount of people they did.

• “Although educational technology has been shown to produce learning gains as measured by standardized tests, it has done so only in a supplementary role and in certain subject areas.” This paper shows the importance of choosing technology that is beneficial as a whole to the largest amount of people possible. The five areas that received federal help were the following:

1. Sesame Street2. The PLATO computer-based system3. The Star Schools distance learning program4. Computer-assisted instruction5. The E-Rate initiative to build telecommunications infrastructure

These all had a very high chance of succeeding because they benefited a large group of people.

Some ThoughtsSome Thoughts• I again think this article shows how difficult it is

to reach a large audience to benefit due to the cost of technology. There are thousands of schools and not every single one is going to be helped by the government. I think it is very hard to pick and choose certain schools that should receive state of the art technology and others that will not receive any. I think this makes funding very difficult and that it is important to use the technology where it will be most beneficial and not just because it is available.

ConclusionConclusion• Overall I think technology is very important in the classroom.

I believe it can be very beneficial and helpful when used in particular situations. I think that there are certain areas where technology is not going to be as helpful as others. For example, I think that it would be very helpful in science but not as much in gym. There are certain activities that require technology more than others and I think that it is important to know this in order to take care of the more important areas first. I do not think every single classroom needs to be the same and that small steps are necessary to make the big picture possible. Technology has become a part of every persons life and especially children because it is all they have seen and known. I think it is our responsibility to teach them its benefits and use in a positive way.
