BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Marjorie E. Clagett’s father, John Henry Clagett (1856-1937), the son of John Gay Clagett and Mary Jane Harrell, was born in Grayson County, Kentucky. In 1884, he married Maggie Northcott (1864-1895) and they had three children: William Argo Clagett (1885-1978), Harry Northcott Clagett (1888-1974) and Kate Northcott Clagett (1892-1983), who married Carroll Allen Duncan. In 1898, after Maggie’s death, John H. Clagett married Hattie Caruth Strange, the widow of Ben Cooke. Their daughter, Marjorie Elizabeth Clagett, was born on 20 May 1900 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. John H. Clagett was a longtime teacher of English in Warren County, Kentucky, serving at Cedar Bluff College in Woodburn, the Pleasant J. Potter College in Bowling Green and, from 1908 to 1936, the Western Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College (now WKU).

Marjorie Clagett graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1918. In 1920 she received an Advanced Teaching Certificate from the Western Kentucky State Normal School (now WKU), where she studied French and Latin. She then earned a bachelor of arts degree (1923) and a master of arts degree (1926) from Indiana University in Bloomington. She taught at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota from 1926-1927, and spent July 1928 continuing her French studies at The Sorbonne and the Institut de Phonétique in Paris, France. Upon her return, she joined the faculty of the foreign languages department at WKU, where she taught French from 1928 until her retirement in 1964. She also directed the school’s French club, Le Cercle Français.

Marjorie Clagett was an accomplished amateur botanist. Her chief interest was in photographing and documenting the wildflowers of southcentral Kentucky, particularly in the Gasper River region. She lectured on the subject, and in 1989 published some of her research as The Waters of Gasper River. She also made studies elsewhere in the United States and in Great Britain. Another of Marjorie’s major research pursuits was the history and genealogy of the French in America, particularly in Kentucky. Studies of her own family history included On the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike Road, a collection of reminiscences and photographs, and Gentle Lady, a selection of writings by her half-sister, Kate (Clagett) Duncan. Marjorie was also a member of the Presbyterian Church and the XX Literary Club. She died at her home at 1645

    COLLECTION NOTE

This collection mainly covers four aspects of the life and career of Marjorie E. Clagett: family records, including genealogy, correspondence and photographs; her personal correspondence and papers; research materials and field notes relating to her studies of flora in Kentucky and elsewhere; and research materials on the French in Kentucky, including French surnames, place names, settlements and assorted historical data. An inventory, including genealogical notes, is in Box 1, Folder 1. The genealogy is intended to show relationships among the individuals featured most prominently in this collection and should not be construed as comprehensive. Box 1 contains primarily correspondence, Bible records, charts and other research regarding the history and genealogy of the Clagett (Folders 2-7), Adams (Folders 8, 9), Alexander (Folder 10), Gay (Folder 11), Harrell (Folder 12), Hays (Folder 13) and Strange (Folders 14, 15) families. Included is correspondence of both Marjorie Clagett and Kate (Clagett) Duncan with Brice M. Clagett (Folder 7), a Washington lawyer who conducted extensive research on the Clagett family. Correspondence regarding the estate of Frances (Stockwell) Adams, a cousin of Marjorie’s mother Hattie (Folder 9), as well as Mary (Strange) Stockwell’s letters to Hattie’s guardian, Tubal E. McDaniel (Folder 15) provide additional information on the Strange family and on Hattie’s early life after her parents died when she was still a child. Correspondence on the genealogy of the Alexander and related families (Folder 10) supplements materials found in a related collection: see Alexander Family Papers (MSS 505). Box 2 contains material relating primarily to Marjorie’s father, John H. Clagett. His letters (Folder 1) include two to his daughter Kate’s husband that demonstrate his affection for his family; to a former student and close friend, WKU art instructor Ivan Wilson, written during the latter’s extended illness in 1926; and a testy response to WKU dean Finley Grise’s request to complete a questionnaire. A memorial volume (Folder 5) prepared by WKU and presented to his family after Clagett’s death includes eulogies by fellow teachers. In 1938, WKU faculty member James P. Cornette published a biography (Folder 6) entitled John Henry Clagett: “His life was gentle…,” with family photographs and illustrations by Ivan Wilson. Also included are letters to Clagett’s daughters praising the book (Folder 7) and Cornette’s correspondence and research material for the book (Folders 8, 9). In 1986, Marjorie Clagett compiled a companion book to Cornette’s titled On the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike Road: Relating to John Henry Clagett by James P. Cornette, 1938 (Folder 10). This book also featured family photographs, illustrations by Ivan Wilson, and excerpts from family papers. The remainder of Box 2 contains material relating to Ivan Wilson and his friendship with John H. Clagett; included are themes written by Wilson as a student and graded by Clagett (Folder 11), cartoons by Wilson, many related to their hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities (Folder 12), and small pieces of artwork in oil (Folder 14) and pencil (Folder 15), some of which were used to illustrate the two books about Clagett. Also included are Wilson’s tribute to his beloved Irish setter Rufus the Red, also known as “Poody” (Folder 16), and data about Wilson himself, collected in a questionnaire he completed for Kate (Clagett) Duncan and narrated in her essay “Ivan Wilson: A Neighbor’s View” (Folder 17).

Box 3 contains material relating primarily to the families of John H. Clagett and his first wife, Maggie Northcott. A letter to Sena Ballard (Folder 2) from her future father-in-law John H. Clagett congratulates her on her engagement and praises her choice of a husband in his son William Argo Clagett, known as “Argo.” A letter (Folder 2) to Argo from author Lida Calvert Obenchain (“Eliza Calvert Hall”) reports on her life in Texas and on the health of her daughter Margery, a contemporary of Argo’s. A World War II-era letter from a Bowling Green serviceman to his mother (Folder 3) notes a book reference to the service of Argo’s son, John Henry Clagett, wounded in a Japanese attack at sea. Papers of the senior John H. Clagett’s sister Mary Ann “Annie” Clagett (Folders 4, 5) include letters and postcards relating to her service as a missionary in Japan, and a travel diary documenting her trip from Japan to New York via the Middle East and Europe in 1907-1908. Northcott family materials include genealogy (Folder 8) and papers relating to various family members. Included are notes by Kate (Clagett) Duncan of a Northcott ancestor’s encounter with Lost River Cave in Warren County, Kentucky during the Civil War (Folder 10); letters, including one with a pro-temperance theme comparing the loss of life on the Titanic to that wrought by liquor, and a journal of religious doctrine of Reverend Henry Clay Northcott, the father of John H. Clagett’s first wife, Maggie Northcott (Folder 11); letters to Maggie’s sister Martha Catherine “Kate” Northcott from an admirer and from her future husband, Bruce Thomas (Folder 12); and letters of Maggie Northcott (Folder 15), including to her sister announcing her engagement, and to her father asking that he perform her marriage ceremony and describing her wedding plans. Papers of Kate (Clagett) Duncan include a letter of recommendation from a teacher at the Cincinnati College of Music (Folder 17); a letter of her husband, Carroll Duncan, describing the newly married couple’s move to Binghamton, New York (Folder 18); various writings of Kate’s, including a story, “The Good Retriever,” based on the family dog “Tawny Boy” (Folder 22) and a play (Folder 23); and comments collected by Marjorie Clagett on a book of Kate’s writing compiled after her death entitled Gentle Lady: Selected Writings of Kate Clagett Duncan (Folder 25). Box 4 contains personal papers, mostly correspondence, of Marjorie Clagett. Included are childhood items such as a school primer (Folder 1), records of the “Mother Goose Society,” a literary club begun with her playmate Ruth Alexander (Folder 2); diary summaries and pages from her Little Colonel’s Good Times Record (Folder 3); a “birthday book” with contributors’ autographs beside their birthdates (Folder 4); and a theme, “Horatio,” with her father’s grade and comment (Folder 5). Marjorie’s letters written during her month at The Sorbonne (Folder 6) are to her parents and describe the voyage over, her lodgings with a Paris family, her studies, sightseeing and entertainments, and French life and customs. Her general correspondence from 1910-1984 (Folder 7) includes condolences on the deaths of her mother and of Kate and Carroll Duncan that elicit personal memories from the writers. Correspondence from 1985-1987 (Folder 8) includes praise and reminiscences from recipients of Gentle Lady and On the Louisville and Nashville Turnpike Road. Correspondence from 1988-1993 (Folder 9) includes annual Christmas letters and other letters from family, friends and former students, and praise from recipients of The Waters of Gasper River. Correspondence from 1994-1995 (Folder 10) includes annual Christmas letters and cards from friends and former students. Undated correspondence (Folder 11) includes a letter and anecdote from a former student of John H. Clagett’s who composed of one of the themes in Box 2, Folder 2, and a note from poet Jim Wayne Miller responding to Marjorie’s comments on some of the images in his book Copperhead Cane.

The correspondence includes personal greetings as well as annual Christmas letters and other letters updating her on the activities of the students and their families. In some cases, photographs are included. Also included in many cases are Marjorie’s own summary notes on milestones in the students’ lives, such as studies and family, job or residence changes.

Box 6 contains Marjorie Clagett’s notes and travel diary of a trip to England in 1970 (Folder 1) as well as letters to her from various individuals, several of whom are friends and fellow naturalists in England and Scotland. Of interest are letters (Folder 7) from Hope MacDougall, a photographer and noted collector of artifacts documenting Scottish domestic life, as she exchanges information with both Marjorie and her sister Kate on topics of mutual interest. Letters of advice (Folder 8) from physicist John O’Connor, a former student, show Marjorie’s interest in mastering the technical details of photography. Box 7 primarily contains materials relating to Marjorie Clagett’s teaching and study of the French language and people. Included are programs and study materials of WKU’s French Club, Le Cercle Français (Folder 3); postcards and photographs of France (Folder 4, 5); and various written material in French (Folders 7-12). Of interest (Folder 6) are collected World War II letters and accounts (some in French, some in English) relating to encounters with French soldiers and civilians in France and North Africa. Box 8 contains programs and background material presented by Marjorie Clagett to her literary club, the XX Club, as well as botanical study and research material. Boxes 13 and 14 contain files on French surnames related to Marjorie Clagett’s research on the French in Kentucky. The contents vary in size, but many contain biographies, genealogical data, correspondence or clippings. A separate file (Folder 56) is devoted to Franklin, Kentucky resident Eugénie Pingon, who assisted students of French at WKU in the 1950s and 1960s. Box 15 contains mostly miscellaneous historical research and information collected by Marjorie Clagett on the Presbyterian Church (Folders 6-9) and other topics. Oversized items (shelved separately, list in Folder 12) include a photographic presentation on student dress at the Western Kentucky State Normal School in the 1920s, and Marjorie Clagett’s diplomas from Bowling Green High School and the Western Kentucky State Normal School.
