1 UTAMA RAINFOREST INTRODUCTION HISTORY This site is located in a shopping complex called One Utama Complex. It is located in the Ground level of the mall. There are about 50 species of plants and trees. There are also waterfalls and ponds with koi fishes. Opened in the year of 1995. Owner of the shopping mall- Bandar Utama City Centre Sdn Bhd built the rainforest to create awareness of nature. A Malaysian botanist, Dr. Francis NG worked on establishing this rainforest. 2003- trees were selected and replanted 2004- GO GREEN campaign started. It has the FEED THE FISH Charity Campaign where 10,000 shoppers participated. The park is located in the shopping mall. Inside, Outside the mall, it is surrounded by buildings. There are also car parks. Surrounding the rainforest inside, there are restaurants, and shops.

Human activities

 NIGHT TIME OBSERVATION

TALKING Families and friends can hang out and converse. Nature lovers would have interesting talks. +: improve their relationship and create a nice atmosphere -: block peoples way STROLLING

Shoppers walk around to get some fresh air and observe the surroundings. +: relax their minds

TAKING PICTURES People take pictures in the rainforest for memories and students can do their research. +: gain knowledge by observing the nature and have fun

FEED THE FISH There’s a vending machine where you can buy fish food for RM 1.00. +: Entertainment for children to feed the koi fishes -: Excess food can cause pollution and kill the fishes

CANOPY WALK Located on top of the rainforest, shoppers can cross the bridge and enjoy the view. +: easy to get to the other wing. -: no safety awareness board At nighttime, we observe something different and saw some problems.

LIGHTS +: give a nice view -: The forest is dark and the light is very dim.

BRIDGE +: Good scenery with relax atmosphere -: No security or supervision.

PAVEMENTS -: Can’t see clearly and very dangerous at night when its slippery

  POND: There are fishes such as koi fishes, and turtles. Plants surround the pond. +: Entertain people -:

SUSPENSION BRIDGE:

WATERFALL: +: flow to the pond and benefit the fishes -: the water spill all over the floor and make it slippery.

BRIDGE: A mini wooden bridge to cross over the pond.. +: More efficient for people to go to the waterfall and fun for kids. -: Unsafe for kids because there’s no fence.

Located on the 3rd floor, it connects from the East to West wing. +: enjoy the top view -: no safety awareness board

           GROUP 2: TREES Most of the trees are alike. +: Blocks the small plants from sunlight. -: It looks crowded and not organized.

PAVEMENT: There many types of pavement: rocks, metals and wood. +: easy to walk on. -: when its wet, its slippery and dangerous.

GROUP 1 : SHRUB This shrub is found near one of the entrance. +: start off our stroll into the forest with interesting and unique plants.

Circulation pattern (pedestrian only)

Space/zoning

The area is divided into three zones: Indoor park, shops and restaurants. PUBLIC SPACE: generally open and accessible to people. Restaurants: Teh Tarik Place, Secret Recipe, and O’Brien.

BRIDGE: Linear/straight pattern. Relationship: Terminate in a space +: short and stable. Reach the other side in no time -: too small (only can have max of 4 people on it. And it is also not safe for kids because there’s no handle.

PATHWAY Curvilinear pattern Relationship: Pass by a space +: save space as well as create more space to walk on; It also gives off a mysterious feeling… -:

The pathway have 4 main starting points.: 2 near the escalator, 1 near the restaurant Secret Recipe and the other one from outside, (Plants giveaway)

+: Space arrangement is planned well. It’s organized and suitable to surroundings. It’s not too crowded and not too big. -: Not much people come by to the area. They are not that lively with events. ZONING AREA OF THE SITE

 Site synthesis – SOLUTIONS!

SOLUTION 2 Build a fence around the bridge to prevent people, especially kids, from falling

SOLUTION 3 Add more light for nighttime

SOLUTION 1 Increase the support of the bridge; make it stronger.

SOLUTION 9 Add some chairs to sit on.

SOLUTION 5 Add safety awareness board for both lower ground level and the 3rd level at the suspension bridge.

SOLUTION 4 Add a warning sign saying, “Do not overfeed the fish”

SOLUTION 7 Have someone supervise the forest and increase the security system- especially at night.

SOLUTION 8 To decrease the risk of people falling from slippery floor, have a supervision comes in and check the safety around the park.: They can clean the water off the floor or they can put a big sign to warn. SOLUTION 6

Organize the plants more neatly and have labels with general information on the side as a guide.
