Defining Cloud Computing ( with apologies to Rentsch )

...Cloud Computing will be in the 2010's what structured

programming was in the 1970's. Everyone will be in favor of it. “Every vendor will promote their products as supporting it. Every

executive will pay lip service to it. Every business will implement “

it (differently). And no one will know just what it is.

- Paraphrasing Rentsch, T. “Object Oriented Programming”; SIGPLAN Notices; Sept 1982; Vol.17 No.12; P51

Driving Cloud Standards is an Ugly Business

““ RedMonk has always positioned itself on the side of openness and positive community interaction, which is why after the recent muck

slinging and general unpleasantness in the Cloud standards space we’re pleased to see some sanity returning with a new initiative from the Freepleased to see some sanity returning with a new initiative from the Free

Ugliness in the space is all around

Dell applied to trademark the term "cloud computing" (U.S. Trademark 77,139,082) in the United States. The "Notice of Allowance" it received in July 2008 was canceled on August 6, resulting in a formal rejection of the trademark application less than a week laterlater

On 30 September 2008, USPTO issued a "Notice of Allowance" to CGactive LLC (U.S. Trademark 77,355,287) for "CloudOS". A cloud operating system is a generic operating system that "manage[s] the relationship between software inside theoperating system that manage[s] the relationship between software inside the computer and on the Web", such as Microsoft Azure Good OS LLC also announced their "Cloud" operating system on 1 December 2008

Conclusion

Bandwidth inversion and new multi-CPU & multi-Core computing architectures make a truly distributed and networked computing model possiblenetworked computing model possible

Management complexity is the last straw that breaks theManagement complexity is the last straw that breaks the IT infrastructure. The Cloud revolution will break the cost escalation cycle of improving ROI and lowering TCO through simplificationthrough simplification.
