Door Seal / Surround MKIII+The door seal on the Mini seems to have changed with each model update. The MK� & later door seal is notable because of its large ‘bulb’ area. The ‘bulb’ is the round section that the door closes against. The size is determined by how much gap the door leaves. If the bulb is too small then the air rushes in. Seal Fixed Quarter WindowNot every Mini has hinged rear quarter windows (rear side windows). This is the seal for the ones that don’t open. The original rubber is prone to being baked by the sun, and they dry out and crack. The other problem comes from having the car painted without removing the window seals, and so they are often covered with paint. SPi to SU Carb ConversionIn 1991 the first fuel injected Mini was produced. Know as Single Point Injected or SPi for short, the system also incorporated its first ECU into the car. The SPi Mini might have a c h i e v e d t h e objective of better

fuel economy and emissions control, but the loss of performance and reliability still plagues the life of the SPi Mini. In addition the SPi Mini is very difficult at best to upgrade to get any significant performance enhancements. Axle and CV Joint AssemblyThe ‘CV Joint’ connect the axle to the drive flange on the front of the Mini. It transfers tremendous loads at severe angles. Three designs of joints were used in the Mini throughout it’s history. The first ‘18 spline’ type was only used in ‘59 & ‘60 and are no longer available. The replacement type- 19 spline has always been the most common as it is the one used on all Minis with front drum brakes and were even used on the various Coopers with the small disc brakes. The nut size on the end of this joint

uses a 1 1/8” socket. The third type of joint is the much larger version as used on all other models and it uses a 1 5/16” socket for the nut.A worn CV Joint is typically caused by poor or no maintenance. The grease in them must be of the best quality and MUST BE KEPT CLEAN. When the grease is allowed to absorb brake dust and road dirt because of a torn rubber boot it will act like a grinding paste to destroy the inner balls. To determine the condition of your CV joint simply requires jacking up the front wheels, turning the steering to full lock and rotating the wheels. They should turn freely with no feel or sounds of “clicking”. Even the slightest sound means the joint is on the way out!
