Our Christmas social was fun with the Christmas IQ test (located elsewhere in this newsletter), our exercise with the 12 days of Christmas and ‘Twas the night before Christmas gift exchange! Thank you everyone that joined in.

I really would like to see our club sponsor two delegates to the Youth Leadership & Diversity Conference July 9-14. Civitan makesa difference!

December 13, 2017 Tim Kraayenbrink presented Michelle DeLaRiva, executive director of Community and Family Resources. She was also assisted by Annie Sullivan, campaign director. Michelle has been with CFR for 13 years and started with them as a substance abuse counselor in Webster City. They deal with mental illness and alcoholism (the majority being alcoholism). They will mark their 50th year next year serving individuals and families.

One in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences a mental illness in a given year as well as 1 in 10 individuals aged 12 and up are diagnosed with a substance abuse disorder. They work primarily with ages13 to 65 years, 68% male and 32% female. Thirty-two percent of the clients they serve are in Webster County (they serve a 10-county area). In Webster County this year 2017, 786 different residents were served in all treatment areas, primarily extended outpatient. So what is CFR’s total 2017 impact? 3,000 individuals served in treatment programs, 13,000 individuals served in prevention programs (with an 83% overall client satisfaction rate) in 10 counties: Pocahontas, Humboldt, Wright, Franklin, Hardin, Hamilton, Webster, Calhoun, Boone and Story, with 77 employees.

The following are the programs they provide: Crisis Stabilization. This is in the South 17th building. They assist clients with resolving the issue that brought them in for services. Detoxification: They are one in three in Iowa that provide this. The staff is duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Adult Residential Services: They offer inpatient residential treatment programming to adults 18 years and up for addictions or gambling disorders. This is a full-time program. Adolescent Residential Services (STARS):

They are located near Corpus Christi and they offer treatment for ages 12 to 18, who live there 3 to 6 months for drinking problem. Capacity is 15 and currently there are 10 youth there. Recovery House: not just traditional housing but an extension of the therapeutic community. They house men with chronic substance abuse. All 10 live together with a case manager. They are required to

get a job and have job skills. Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment: This is for both adults and adolescents, and is housed in a building on 31st Avenue North near Sports Page. Each treatment track offers a mixture of individual and group counseling, random drug screens, and opportunities for family participation and support. Mental Health: Through counseling and other services, CFR helps each client assess, understand and work toward resolution of their concerns, including depression, anxiety, self-esteem, relationships, anger, emotional regulation and important life decisions. Problem Gambling: It has been described as one of the most deniable, hidden addictions, however it is just as real and devastating as addiction to drugs or alcohol. She said that

the adults age 50 and above start looking for things to do and this is one they’re attracted to. Professional Development: They work with businesses to help professionals reach their full potential. Prevention Education: They offer several programs that focus on preventing use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and gambling.

Their funding comes from Iowa Department of Human Services, private insurance, Medicaid, County funding, federal contract and foundation grants. Note: it does not come from Medicare. They have now broken ground west of the former Colonial Inn (east of Youth and Shelter care) for a building that will house all of their programs. Expected completion is March 2019 and total cost is $6.6 million They are currently running a $2 million campaign and the rest will be bank financing.

December 18, 2017 We met for our evening meeting/social at Pizza Ranch with a good attendance of 16! Thank you everyone. I think only 3 locals were missing of which two I believe are gone for Xmas and a winter vacation. Pretty much President Nancy just gave reminders of things coming up: Next Wednesday, Xmas gift exchange and fun time at Zakeers. Reminder all month of January to bring items for Youth Shelter Care; items are listed in December newsletter, but Pat also handed out the list as well. She also said she did deliver the rest (about 15) Xmas gift bags remaining from the Xmas dance to YSC as well. Pizza Ranch fundraiser on January 29 and we will finalize workers at the January 15 meeting. Fundraiser reminders were that we will sell Braid bread and chocolate chip cookie dough between March 2-16 and to keep using the RADA online catalog ordering. With the braid bread we get at least $5.00 for each item we sell and if we

FundraisingBraid-Bread FundraiserIn order to supplement our future projects and giving, we need to continue to do fundraising. The membership voted to try selling the braid-bread during March 2-16. We can only sell for the two-week time, collect the money at the time of the order, and submit the order to the West Bend, Iowa plant on March 17. They will deliver to us the next week in time for Easter on April 1st. No, this is NOT an April fool’s joke. We keep $5.00 for each item we sell. For example, if one member sells 20 items, we will make $100. If 10 members sell 4 items apiece, we make $200.00. If more than 200 items are sold, then we keep $6.00 each. Rememberm this can be designated to be used for the future Youth Leadership conference or handicapped summer camps.

Youth Shelter Care

During the month of January we will collect items for Youth Shelter Care! We voted at our recent business meeting to bring needed items to each of the meetings in January including the Pizza Ranch meeting to the Youth Shelter care. Right now, they have

15 youth and for the month of December, we will donate our remaining Christmas bags from the party we just had. Here is a list of the following items:

Wish List: Twin sheets, pillows, bath towels, wash cloths, cleaning supplies (kitchen, bathroom, dusting, sanitizing), oven mitts, hand sanitizer, first aid kits, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, combs/picks, hair brushes, hair ties, lotions, makeup kits, nail polish and remover, hats and gloves and scarfs, snow pants Size 8Y to Adult, Socks youth XS-XL (boys and girls), basket balls, footballs, soccer balls, assorted batteries, arts and craft supplies (paper, markers, scissors, glue, washable paint, etc), craft kits, stress balls, water bottles, playdough/moon sand, youth books, Barbie and baby dolls, clock radios, post-its or notebooks or construction paper or journals, wall clings for youth to decorate their rooms, gift cards, or monetary support is always a huge help.

Out-of-town Civitan members: If you feel this is a worthwhile cause, you may send a check to our club and we will purchase items for you!

sell more than 200 items we keep $6.00; the RADA we keep 40%.

Members were thanked for helping out with Salvation Army Bell ringing and we made in the 7 hours a total of $591.44. Also, Mary told us that the Younkers days will be in March, so we will plan for that.

Members were asked about giving a Xmas gift (money) to the waitress, etc at Zakeers next week. Being that they have had a turnover of help and Shelly been with us about a month, we decided to not do this year but consider it next Christmas.

President Nancy asked if anyone was interested in doing the tours for Community Family Resources that our speaker last week talked about on December 29 or January 4. Consensus was that no one was interested at this time.

President Nancy explained that she would like to do a new service project for a handicapped bowling tourney. More than likely it will include the 32 bowlers on the Wednesday night league at Family, give them 90% handicap so that it is fair and the top 9 or whatever gets a trophy. Currently there are 9 trophies; mention was made to maybe look at medallions for participation to the rest and to look at Party Productions. Also talk was given to maybe look at paying for their lineage; most said that they usually expect to pay for it but finalization will be made at the January business meeting and

maybe look at doing this in February.President Nancy also explained would

like to do a progressive dinner, which would be homes for the appetizer, salad/soup, main entrée, and dessert. It was decided to look at doing in spring, probably April when the weather would be better. Currently, the following said they may use their homes: Passow, Scheer, Jessen, and Metzger. We will decide this at the February business meeting.

President Nancy wished everyone a Merry Christmas and passed out cherry candy canes and to Jordan and Danielle, a gift of their favorite soda. Jordan loves Rootbeer and Danielle Diet Dr. Pepper.

Honoree was Danielle and Glad hand winner was Cheryl Passow.

December 27, 2017 We had a fun Christmas social today! Even on a COLD morning! We got warmed up with our song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” hmmm.. how many got up when it was their turn for the specific number? Actually, I believe most did! Good job! We then did a 28-question Christmas IQ test that president Nancy found in some “older” years of Civitan stuff. I will print this test in the newsletter and answers on a different page! It was a little tricky, but Judy Lang got 15 of them right! After that, Pat Scheer read the “The Night Before Christmas” to us where we passed our white elephant gifts either “right” or ‘‘left” when the specific word was mentioned in the story. At the end the members opened up their gifts.

Clergy Appreciation Week

Clergy Appreciation Week is a significant event throughout North America. Held each year on the week of February 3, this event shows appreciation

to the clergy of all faiths. Clergy Appreciation Week aims to promote world brotherhood and religious understanding among all people, regardless of religious persuasion. It is a time to reflect on our individual religious beliefs and to promote an understanding and acceptance of the rights of others to participate in a religion different from our own. Clergy Appreciation Week was inspired by an event which occurred during World War II.

The Four ChaplainsOn February 3, 1943, the USS Dorchester was pushing through the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic. With 905 American servicemen aboard, the Dorchester left its convoy a few hours short of its destination. A German submarine, stalking the ship undetected, took this opportunity to fire a torpedo straight toward the ship’s stern. The torpedo struck amidships and exploded in the boiler room. Many on board died instantly, and some were trapped below deck. Others, jolted from their bunks half asleep, clambered to reach the decks of the stricken vessel. Taking on water rapidly, the ship began listing to starboard. Because security reasons prevented use of distress flares, escort vessels, still close enough to assist, pushed on into the darkness, unaware that the Dorchester was sinking. Overcrowded lifeboats capsized; rafts drifted away before anyone could reach them.

On deck, amid confusion and terror, Army chaplains George L. Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark V. Poling and John P. Washington moved about calming frightened men, directing bewildered soldiers to lifeboats, and distributing life jackets with calm precision. Soon, the supply of jackets was exhausted, yet four young soldiers, afraid and without life vests, stood waiting. Quickly the chaplains stripped off their own and forced them upon the young soldiers.

The four men of God (one Catholic, one Jewish and two Protestant) had given away their only means of saving themselves in order to save others. Men rowing away from the sinking ship in lifeboats saw the chaplains clinging to each other on the slanting deck, arms linked together and heads bowed as they prayed to the one God whom each of them loved and served. The Dorchester sank beneath the icy waters of the North Atlantic, pulling with it the four chaplains and 675 servicemen.

It is this moment which Civitans annually pause to remember, and in so doing, pause to say thank you to the clergy of their communities.

Junior Civitan News

Junior Civitan has recently completed a fundraiser in December with the Candy Gram (candy cane with a note) sales at the high school. Profits were put toward general supplies. Juniors

purchased fleece fabric and made 6 child-sized fleece blankets. They will be delivering these on Wednesday, January 10 to Unity Point Pediatrics.

Currently they have 11 Juniors of which the majority are Senior Class members. I will be encouraging those Seniors to fill out the Shropshire Scholarship application.
