“The large Millau viaduct is the last link in the Meridian chain, a free autoroute linking Clermont-Ferrand and Béziers … When in 2005, the viaduct will span the majestic gorges of the Tarn west of Millau and just nearby the famous cellars of Roquefort, the most direct and least costly way to go between Paris and the Mediter-ranean or Spain will surely be a popular hit.” Construire –No. 62 – Nov. 2001 (Revue Eiffage Construction) When completed, the Millau Viaduct will be a world record for multi-cabled spans. The variant in deck and towers made of steel proposed by the Eiffage Group constitutes a premiere resulting from its innova-tive building mode for an exception-ally sized structure : the launching on very high pile rows. The materi-als are high performance : S460 ML steel for the center coffer dams (pile) and B60 concrete for the very high piles.

The construction of the piles, the assembling and the launching are the strong points of this outstanding viaduct for which SETEC TPI employed for the Eiffage Group high-performance software which allowed obtaining a detailed analysis of the wind’s actions on the structure, the launching phases of the metal deck and all the new developments of the PYTHAGORE software involving the non-linear analysis of the reinforced concrete piles, and the stability of the stiffened sheet metal panels according to the Eurocode .
