Civil Engineer Designs pipelines to transport oil to oil rigs or to transfer oil to a tanker. Pipelines must be strong and flexible enough to withstand North Sea conditions, arctic temperatures and deserts. Work involves designing on a computer and visiting sites to evaluate and oversee projects. Part of his job involves working with schools to develop projects and raise awareness of Engineering as a career choice. Meetings with clients and project managers. 9.00am – 5.00pm unless a big project needs to be finished. Attend school to 18 years old and gain A Levels in Maths and Physics. Degree in Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Mostly in an office but sometimes on site work. Starting salary £25,000 (€30,629) Chartered Engineers can earn £60,000 + (€73,511) Good communication skills both verbal and written. Designing skills and ability to work Computer Aided Design programmes (CAD). Problem solving skills. Good ability to work with others and as part of a team. Technical skills to operate equipment.. Smart Clothes – shirt and tie. All design work is done on computers. Calculator and data equipment.
