After 25 years in the RNZAF I was ready for a change. Civil construction appealed, as I like working outside and was keen to learn how to use heavy machinery.TPP’s Certificate in Civil Plant Operation (Introductory) ticked all the boxes. I enjoyed its practical hands-on focus and got plenty of experience on different

machines, as well as learning about soils, environmental impacts, site works and so much more. It was the best move I ever made. TPP made the transition from military to civilian life easier and gave me the skills and confidence to look for work in a new area.

CIVIL CONSTRUCTION CAREER PROSPECTSTimes have changed! There was a time when a qualification at the commencement of a career would last a lifetime. In order to achieve the mostof a career, employees today must embrace the life-time learning philosophy.

Civil construction is a vast industry with a huge number of speciality fields. This means an employee can identify the type of work, or perhaps a certain machine they would like to specialise in. This will maximise job satisfaction and ensure a secure future within the greater civil construction industry.

Civil construction is not ‘easy’ work, but most of those who work within this industry love it. It is a career that will allow you to make a difference in the lives of ordinary New Zealanders and pay you well for the privilege.

Some graduates have worked for a short time in New Zealand after graduation and have then travelled to countries such as Australia and Canada to work in mines or on large construction projects.

Regardless of what you would like to do in the future within the civil construction or mining industries, a civil construction programme will give you the best possible start. Any fees and time spent attending the programme will be the bestinvestment in your future that you could possibly make.

Fees paid for the Certificate in Civil Plant Operations (Introductory) or Civil Construction, Quarrying and Mining are eligible for an interest free student loan from Studylink for all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.

Many trainees also qualify for training allowances during the programme.

WHAT WILL YOU STUDY ?This qualification provides training for people involved with the use of explosives. The unit standards cover the knowledge and use of explosives and their storage as well as the actual design and carrying out of blasting for land operations.People who successfully complete this qualification will receive the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Land Operations Using Explosives). This qualification recognises the skills of operators such as agricultural workers, seismic blasters, conservation workers, or firewood contractors who have blasting on land responsibilities. The qualification has a significant health and safety component in recognition of the hazards associated with the extractive environment and blasting responsibilities. The holder of this qualification is able to demonstrate knowledge of explosives and their properties, and can outline the legal and operational requirements of blasting for an approved handler.A graduate of the qualification is able to demonstrate skills in storing explosives, designing blasting layouts, and carrying out blasting operations for land work.

• 21152 - Demonstrate knowledge of storing explosives for use in extractive industries

These units are core compulsory units for all of the above National Certificates.A typical blasting programme is set around theory lessons describing the storage, properties and handling of explosives. Trainees then go into a practical setting where blasts are planned and initiated to remove such things as rocks, stumps and split trees for firewood and clear drains and dams.

PROGRAMME STRUCTUREPrior to the on-site days there is a pre-course component which students are required to complete and bring to class on day one. There is an on-site component for 3 days. Trainees return home and complete the assessment tasks and return them for marking.

ASSESSMENTTrainees are assessed with their practical work during the on-site course and with written assessments pre and post course. They are required to complete the explosives log, recording their blasting experience.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?These courses are suitable for any persons using explosives in occupation such as:• Mining• Agriculture• Firewood• Quarrying• Construction• Seismic TestingThe mining, quarrying and construction areas require further training.

‘I love driving the diggers.’

I knew I wanted to work outdoors, but it took a while for me to work out what I wanted to do. After considering different options, I signed on for TPP’s Civil Construction, Quarrying and Mining programme.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. The tutors were very understanding and helpful - and I loved driving the diggers.

I now work at a goldmine loading and off-loading screens, and drive a 27-tonne digger on the job. It’s so big that I have to climb up into it. One day I’d like to get my own piece of land and run my own gold claim.
