C.I.T.Y (Catch and Inspire Them Young) is a
leadership development and character shaping
transformation program targeted at teenagers. It
is primarily aimed at re-orientating the minds of
teenagers in the areas of personal mastery,
leadership, educational excellence, national
development consciousness and
entrepreneurship.
Over the last 4 years, C.I.T.Y has engaged over 1,300
volunteers and scores of corporate partners to
reach over 7,500 teenagers with our award-
winning leadership development programs; while
other projects that have reached over another
5000 unique individuals.
In 2015, The C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership School
hosted over 450 teenagers in four multiple
locations simultaneously- Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan,
and Ota. This project engaged over 250 volunteers
sourced from the length and breadth of Nigeria,
and was a most exciting experience!
This year’s C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership Program was my best so far- it was stretching physically, ?nancially and mentally- it was indeed truly inspiring! I enjoyed every bit of time I spent working with over 250 extraordinary volunteers in Lagos, Abuja, Ota and Ibadan to inspire over 450 teenagers into becoming leaders, entrepreneurs and change agents.

Why are we doing what we are doing? Why should you join us to Catch and Inspire Teens Young?
Over ?fty percent of Nigerians are below the age of eighteen- this demography forms the foundation of a New Nigeria. To create this new Nigeria, the current limiting mind-sets, belief systems, value systems and mediocrity can be corrected by properly orientating teenagers- who are still very impressionable.
We cannot just fold our hands and expect a values-driven, innovative, entrepreneurial, insightful, courteous, disciplined and patriotic citizenry. Rather, we have to develop and implement the right strategic and systematic solutions to raise a new generation of leaders, while also trying to salvage older generations. C.I.T.Y is a leader in the teenager category- we are positioned to facilitate the transformation of Nigeria by raising teenagers to be leaders and change agents.
As we move into 2016, we are working harder to further optimise our curriculum, operations, and delivery. We are presently redesigning our C.I.T.Y Impact Model to incorporate e-learning modules, Training the Trainers systems, and action (problem-based) learning. Furthermore, in 2016, we will be launching the C.I.T.Y Weekend Boot Camps in other cities of Africa.

Welcome to the 2015 C.I.T.Y Program report. This year’s report features wondrous feats accomplished by the C.I.T.Y. program in the lives of its participants from inception till date.
For the past four years, I have had the privilege of serving as the program coordinator for C.I.T.Y. I am indeed awed at the growth of the program- from impacting just a few students to reaching out to hundreds of teenagers in multiple locations across Nigeria. We have accomplished this in large part due to supporters like you who have invested your time, talents, and resources in our mission.
As we begin to look towards a new year, I am excited by the new opportunities to expand the reach and impact of our programs. As usual, we are continuously enhancing our programs to ensure that participant’s are transformed for positive impact in their homes, schools and

H.O.P.E (acronym for Helping Other People Excel) is a community-development initiative of the Covenant University Alumni Association (CUALA). We launched in on October 1, 2011 at the African Leadership Development Centre in Covenant University and are fully registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria as The EAGLES' HOPE CHARITY FOUNDATION (CAC/IT/NO49157).
Our desire to help other people excel stems from our understanding that we have been called to serve as change agents in our world. We are propelled by the understanding that development takes a community effort, and that if there is going to be any change in our world, then it is going to be up to us.

CITY is more than a program, it's a movement for true leadership in Nigeria and Africa at large. We have a goal but no true destination as it’s a continuous journey to achieving leadership centered and empowered youths
C.I.T.Y. Summer Leadership Camp is a leadership development program focused on causing teenagers between the ages 13 – 18 to imbibe the culture of leadership. The program was conceived with the main objective of developing the leadership potential in these teenagers by training and mentoring them on sound leadership principles and values.
In the short years since our founding, we have contributed to the transformation of Nigeria’s youth, through our training and developmental programs that hold at various times all through the year. These programs are usually hosted in schools and other institutions for teenagers, but a key event for us each year is the C.I.T.Y Summer Leadership Program.
The C.I.T.Y journey began in the summer of 2012 and four years down the line and the passion for teen empowerment is still alive in us. We strongly believe that sound leadership is the key ingredient to achieving the Nigeria of our dreams. What better way to do this than to begin to teach our teenagers what leadership really is. With the help of our enriched curriculum and practical team activities they begin to think critically and creatively, they are taught to work more collaboratively, they are empowered to solve problems. At the heart of it all, they begin to see that they are leaders where they are; right there in their homes, schools and in their society. They learn that leadership is not in position but in accepting responsibilities for a people or a cause.

In a nation where over 50% of its population are under 18 years of age, the greatest investment that can be made is in the lives of those people.
It has been habitually said over time that children are the leaders of tomorrow, but if they don’t begin to learn of leadership today, what hope do we have of tomorrow?
For these teenagers will grow to become the doctors, business men, artists and policy makers of Nigeria. They are essentially the future. If we

inspire, develop and train them in the solid foundation and principles of true leadership, then we are indeed securing the future.
Research shows that youth with high self-esteem, self con?dence, and good social and communication skills will have more successful academic, social, and vocational outcomes. Effective leadership is also dependent on social, emotional, communication and interpersonal competencies. Programs such as CITY program that can successfully teach and sustain these skills in teenagers are thus very valuable tools.
We believe that leadership can be taught and learned as a way of life and with a well articulated curriculum and developmental activities, we can raise leaders!.
At C.I.T.Y, we provide an enabling environment for participants to develop the ability to analyze his or her own strengths and weaknesses, set personal and vocational goals, and have the self-esteem, con?dence,, and abilities to carry them out. Beyond this, participants are able to develop the ability to guide or direct themselves ?rst and then others on a course of action, in?uence the opinions and behaviors of others, and serve as a role model in their communities, schools and homes.
We also foster a culture where participants/teenagers are referred to as leaders through out the program. By doing so, they begin to see themselves as important and vital ingredients to successful development of the society, they begin to see themselves as leaders.

C.I.T.Y. 2015 Summer Program at a glanceC.I.T.Y program has provided a platform for teenagers to understand their role in the community and encourage them to fully participate in community life and effect positive social change.
The 2015 C.I.TY summer program was a non-residential program that took place simultaneously in four locations across Nigeria; Lagos, Ota, Abuja and Ibadan. The geographical spread allowed us to reach a wider audience of participants and volunteers. Unlike our usual camp model where participants are boarded in the school facility for the duration of the program, this year, participants attended the program daily from their respective homes. The program ran from August 5th to August 15th and came at no cost to the participants.

Being a non-residential camp, a lot of
security measures were taken to ensure
every child was accounted for at all times.
The participants were split into squads for
easy management and administration. All
activities were carried out at squad level as
working in these smaller units fostered
teamwork and enhanced learning
capabilities.
This year, our volunteer base also
experienced a leap and involved interactions
with volunteers outside Nigeria. The program
facilitated the engagement of over 200
volunteers across the nation to bring about a
successful summer experience.
The number of volunteers for the program
was suf?cient to adequately cater to the
needs of the students. Our buddy system
ensured that at most, three participants were
assigned to a volunteer in their squad. All

and the participants reaped maximum
bene?t from attending the program.
Parents of participants were carried along in
this transformational journey and were a part
of the closing ceremony. The scores of
accolades and kind words spoken by some of
them during the program emphasizes the
need for continuity and improvement of the
program.
We at CITY are indeed honored to serve the
community once again through this means
and are set for more years of achieving our
leadership objectives through teenage/youth
focused programs.

Key characteristic of this curriculum
enables participants to develop major

achievement skills, character values, purposeful living
perception, leadership skills, positive relationship
building skills and creativity skills.
Classroom trainings and squad activities/competitions
are designed with a focus on creativity, critical thinking,
communication and collaboration in order to prepare
teenagers the future. Participants learn to approach
problems with a creative mindset, collaborating within
their teams to come up with solutions and effectively
communicate their thoughts and opinions to an
audience.
With the growth of technology and media, we also take
care to teach participants how to positively harness the
power of technology and social media to collaborate
and make individual contributions on an
unprecedented scale. They learn to go beyond basic
elements of status updates and instant messaging to
meaningful researching, collaborating, advertising and
advocacy.
Feedback from participants showed that classroom activities were most enjoyed part of the summer program. This year, we introduced our students to the use of workbooks to aid learning. The workbooks were designed to spur re?ective learning and provides spaces and clean pages for participants to utilize.

The C.I.T.Y Program ActivitiesThe Summer program features a number of activities that work together to create the ultimate summer experience for participants. Key highlights of these activities include:
Classroom trainings: Classroom training were focused on C.I.T.Y’s key thematic areas. This includes : Leadership, Personal Mastery and Transformation, Innovation, creativity and Entrepreneurship, Educational Excellence and National Development Consciousness. Other topics covered in addition to the thematic areas are: etiquette and personal branding, sex
education , relationships and con?ict resolution.
Speak for change: The Speak for change competition is aimed at driving research and advocacy in the participants. The competition was done at squad level. Each squad was given a topic to research on and deliver a compelling speech to drive positive change. Topics ranged from social, political, economics and environmental facets.
Case Challenge: The purpose of the Case challenge competition is to stimulate the

minds of the leaders to think critically and proffer creative and innovative solutions to a given challenge. This year’s challenge was focused on building a social enterprise that offered a solution to world hunger. The participants were also given the task of using the business model canvas to pitch their idea/solution. The technicality of this challenge spurred an over?ow of creativity and resourcefulness in the participants.
Career Fair: The Career fair was so successful that at the end of the program, we had many participants with clear perspective of their career choice and what they would want to become in life. It was an expository program that involved many different occupations and practicing professionals. The participants had time to interact with these professionals who offered personal experiences and fact based information on their various careers and advised the young leaders based on their individual needs,
Workshop: This involved hands-on training in bead-making, bag making, pastries, tye and dye, photography, public speaking and many more. The participants were involved in at least one workshop session at a time.
Sports: Sports were played at an inter-squad level. The games were designed with a focus on building team spirit and fostering team work among participants.
Movie Show: The movie selected for screening this was “spare parts”. Being a movie focused on teenagers, participants were able to relate with the characters and their story and were inspired by the outcome and lessons learned from the movie. The movie reiterated the importance of sound leadership and the power of believing in one’s dreams.

Had the largest reach of both volunteers and campers. This year involved
interactions with volunteers from Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroun and Ghana.
Introduced our ?rst C.I.T.Y workbook for participants based on C.I.T.Y Curriculum
Since 2012, C.I.T.Y has engaged over 7000 teenagers from the south-west zone of Nigeria in its different training and development programs. The C.I.T.Y Summer Camp has remained a major event for us, attracting many teenagers from various parts of the country. Since 2012, C.I.T.Y Summer program has hosted a total of 1106 campers/participants under the care and mentorship of over 390 volunteer for a period of 10 – 14 days.

Program Benefits
Feedback showed that at the end of the program, participants demonstrated a greater improvement in their understanding of purpose and their role in the community. “Working on my C.I.T.Y Action project made me realize as a 15 year old, what have I been doing with my life ever since? Participants demonstrated a greater improvement in their social awareness and interpersonal understanding. These individuals are dependable, can work in a team, can understand and relate well with others, and have developed adequate social skills. “Before the program, I was very shy and would never speak a group. I have gained so much con?dence now, I can speak to any crowd and present my ideas without fear.”

In essence, we believe that we can develop, train and nurture the leaders that we yearn for. Through the C.I.T.Y. platform, teenagers can learn that leadership is beyond a person leading a group of people, but a group of people leading themselves to achieve a greater purpose
By supporting and promoting Leadership programs, we are playing a huge role in in?uencing the future of the nation and Africa as a whole.
The bene?ts of the program also extend to our volunteers. Due to the delicacy and importance of training, all our volunteers undergo extensive trainings to ensure they can deliver on C.I.T.Y goals and objectives. These trainings go beyond the C.I.T.Y curriculum to include courses on emotional intelligence, presentation delivery and public speaking that aid the personal development of the volunteers . Through tasks assigned to them, volunteers are exposed to new skills and
are stretched to new heights of knowledge and expertise. Coupled with this, our volunteers are opened to our network of partners and in some cases, have been offered jobs based on our referral and their stellar performance during the C.I.T.Y program. Most of all, volunteers enjoy the satisfaction that comes with helping others excel and are ?lled with a greater sense of purpose and achievement.

Impact to the
CommunityWe don’t stop at just trainings, we empower our participants to be agents of change in their homes, schools and communities. At the end of every camp/summer program, each participant is expected to carry out a change project called C.I.T.Y. Action Project (CAP), either as an individual or as a team, to directly impact their community positively.
If Education doesn’t inspire action, nothing has been learned
C.I.T.Y. Action Project is a platform for teenagers to proffer practicable solutions to problems in their communities and take part in nation building. CAP offers an outlet for the teenagers to put into practice all they have learned and accept responsibility for a cause or for a people. They begin to see their role in community development by providing practicable solutions to everyday problems, where they are with what they have.
Categories of projects commonly undertaken by teenagers include: Advocacy, Trainings, Relief Projects, Community Development. Some of these projects are : (see next page)

Adekunle Aremu holds a Masters and undergraduate degree in Architecture. He is a project management consultant and a proli?c architect who works on high-pro?le projects across Nigeria.
Reginald Bassey earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the reputable Covenant University, Nigeria and also holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA) with a concentration in Public Affairs Policy from the City University of New York. He has worked in various capacities from University Research, Policy Advisement, and Community Mobilization in organisations such as City University of Baruch and the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, both in New York. He is currently a Plantain Farmer in Cross River State where he hopes to raise a small community of aware citizens caring for one another and creating a society that truly works.

Kunle Jinadu has over 6 years of invaluable international service delivery experience from banking to publishing to telecoms servicing and e-commerce. He is the founder/CEO of the nationally-acclaimed Gingerbox, a start-up that delivers fresh fruits to homes and of?ces. His start-up was recently featured on CNN African Start up in September 2015. Kunle is a serial entrepreneur who has founded a number of ?rms.
Kemi Onabanjo was a member of the 2013 class of 25 Future Leaders inducted by Nigeria Leadership Initiative (NLI) as Associate Fellows. In April 2014, Kemi was selected as part of the 500 Washington Fellows of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) by US President, Barack Obama. In July 2011, after an extremely successful career at LM Ericson, Kemi moved to Global Management Consulting giants, McKinsey & Co. She was the engagement manager in the Sub-Saharan Africa of?ce of McKinsey & Co, based in Lagos. She served public and private sector clients across the continent, including Nigeria, South Africa, Tunisia and the Middle East. Kemi has a ?rst-class degree in Computer Science from Covenant University and she is currently studying for an MBA at INSEAD.

Our Partners’ Investments
workat C.I.T.Y programs are designed to provide trainings and leadership mentorship to teenagers. Since inception, the program has been provided at no costs to all its participants. This has been made possible through the ?nancial support of public spirited organizations that are committed towards leadership development and community building.
This year, the core of our ?nancial spend was geared towards feeding and program training supplies and logistics. This was to ensure that we provided a conducive environment for participants and volunteers to function and achieve developmental goals. The commitment of partners and sponsors to support the 2015 C.I.T.Y Summer Program ensured the provision of healthy meals, beverages and water for the duration of the program at all locations. Also, the development/procurement and distribution training materials and teaching aids like the C.I.T.Y workbook to all locations was made possible through our partners who provided both in cash and in kind.
Through the support of our partner network and sponsors, we have been able to continuously drive our mission and cater effectively to the scores of participants’ and volunteers’ needs each year.

second spent with our amazing volunteers. They have been a huge part of our success over the years and we are indeed
thankful for their support and commitment.

As we move into our sixth year of C.I.T.Y program, we will keep striving to deepen the impact of the C.I.T.Y experience for both our participants ,volunteers and partners.
In 2016, we will continue to increase the capacity of our volunteers, by numbers and by knowledge. As our volunteer relations has become diverse in terms of geography, we aim to provide more virtual opportunities for people to remain engaged in C.I.T.Y. activities in spite of location. Also we aim to strengthen our local base and develop initiatives to cater for out of town volunteers where they may occur.
The next C.I.T.Y Summer program is set to attempt a record breaking feat in one or more of its activities. Another goal for the summer program is to increase our reach and serve more teenagers than we have ever done before. We are set to hold multiple summer camps across regions in Nigeria and engage volunteers beyond
the borders of Nigeria. Hence, our camp model for 2016 will include one residential camp in the western part of Nigeria and multiple non-residential programs in other parts of the country.
The continuous success of the C.I.T.Y summer program emphasize the importance of such programs in Nigeria. As such, C.I.T.Y will be embarking on other impactful programs that will run through the course of the year. This will help us cater to the growing base of participants and ensure a wider and effective reach with valuable impact. These programs include:
C.I.T.Y Fellows: This is a fellowship program for National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) members. It is designed to run concurrently with the NYSC program. The selected fellows would be trained on C.I.T.Y’s curriculum and attached to a secondary school as their primary place of assignment during which they would

execute trainings based on C.I.T.Y’s curriculum at their designated schools. Beyond delivering C.I.T.Y trainings at schools, the corp members will be trained by HOPE and other partnering organizations for his or her own personal development and to aid their workforce readiness. They will also be eligible for short internship programs during the school break, with corporate organizations where they can take up challenging roles and build up their employability.
C.I.T.Y Weekend Bootcamp: This features intensive weekend programs for secondary students to train them on CITY’s curriculum. The weekend programs will be based on one of C.I.T.Y.’s thematic areas at a time. The thematic areas are: Leadership, Educational excellence, Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, National development Consciousness and Personal Mastery and Transformation
C.I.T.Y.Homes: This program that is primarily focused on youth correctional facilities and orphanages and is aimed at the development of the mental and spiritual well being of this demographic. This involves hosting educational programs, seminars and faith based conferences to encourage and empower them.
Coupled with this, we also intend to develop online training programs accessible to volunteers and participants via the CITY website. This will facilitate continuous learning and development beyond a scheduled program and increase our interactions with volunteers and participants
With these programs, we can ensure a wider reach and a more intensive impact on the leaders of tomorrow.
