SELENE
In Greek mythology, Selene was the goddess of the moon and was Endy-mion’s companion. Recognized today as one of the metro area’s most successful krewes, Selene is the result of a 1998 meeting of a group of professional women who wanted to establish a fi rst-class nighttime parading krewe in the city of Slidell. In their inaugural proces-sion, Selene rode with 260 women. www.kreweofselene.net
The 22-year-old Krewe of Selene in Slidell includes 300 female members. This year’s 17-fl oat procession, built by Mardi Gras Decorators, is entitled A NEW
ORLEANS STAYCATION. Floats depict subjects such as Relaxing in City Park, Drinks at Pat O’Brien’s, and Afternoon at the Aquarium of the Americas. The procession will also include a Community Outreach fl oat bearing past Athena Award winners. WDSU’s news anchor Sula Kim rides as grand marshal. Hand-made elaborately decorated purses are Selene’s top throws. Selene also tosses lighted headpieces, signa-ture medallion beads, and lighted fl eur de lis beads. Queen and King Selene XXII are Dayna Burkhardt and Chad Nichols. They were crowned at the Krewe of Selene’s annual coronation ball on December 7, 2019, at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans. Theme of this year’s ball was Geaux for the Gold.

Parading on the West Bank, New Orleans’ Most Talked Of Club (NOMTOC) is sponsored by the Jugs Social Club, which was organized in 1951. In addition to entertaining mem-bers and guests, the Jugs give generously to youth groups, schools, and numerous com-munity civic programs. The size and quality of the procession have steadily grown since the inaugural 1970 parade of six fl oats, one posse, and a half-dozen bands. NOMTOC’s membership includes men and women.www.nomtoc.org
King Lawrence Jourdan Jr. and Queen Blair Brunet Burns reign for NOMTOC’s 50th anniversary Carnival parade in Algiers. The 625 members, led by the gold
Jugman theme fl oat , will present a 26-fl oat procession that will depict past parade themes. Each year NOMTOC employs a unique and commendable tradition—the Jugs Social Club sponsors two academic student leaders from each participating school and allows them to ride in the procession as guests of the krewe. WGNO personality Tamica Lee is Grand Marshal, and Downtown Leslie Brown radio person-ality rides as Celebrity Guest in the parade, which will also feature the Pussyfooters dance team and the Southern University Marching Band. The NOMTOC proces-sion traditionally includes more than 100 units, including several out-of-state bands. Members throw many krewe-logo items, including cloisonné bottle openers and 50th
anniversary medallion beads. The ball is set for February 1, 2020, at the Ernest N. Mo-rial Convention Center.
