On January 1, 2010, the residents of the City of Peoria will have a new garbage collection provider. PDC Services, Inc. (PDC) will be the solid waste collector for the disposal of residential garbage, landscape waste and recyclables in the City of Peoria. The City Council endorsed the company’s proposal in October 2009 that offers the same quality services that residents have come to expect plus the addition of a new recycling service at no charge. PDC is a local, family-owned company with over 80 years of experience in the waste collection business. Yard waste collection begins on the third Monday in March, March 15, 2010, and ends the third Friday in December, December 17, 2010.

Yard waste is collected on a weekly basis, the same day as garbage collection.

Yard waste consists of grass, leaves, tree limbs and/or brush. Limbs and brush must be in approved yard waste bags or cut and tied in bundles no longer than 5-feet in length weighing no more than 50 lbs. Please use only non-plastic/non-metallic rope, twine or other binding string.

Please do not mix yard waste with household waste or animal waste.

Fruit and vegetable plants will be picked up as yard waste if all produce is completely removed from the plant.

Yard Waste Containers Use one of the following: • 30-gallon biodegradable paper yard waste bags weighing no more than 50 lbs.

• 95-gallon roll-out cart weighing no more than 50 lbs.

• Customer’s own container should not exceed 45 gallons.

95-Gallon Roll-Out Cart Rental You can use your own garbage container as long as it is no more than 45 gallons in size. You can also rent or buy a 95-gallon roll-out cart through the PDC for your garbage and yard waste needs.

Recycling Drop-Off Sites Peoria County operates several free drop-off sites for recyclable items. For information, call the Peoria County Recycling Resource Conservation office at 681-2550, or visit their website at www.peoriacounty.org/recycle/files/get/ RecyclingLocations.pdf

Residential Recycling Materials Accepted The following is a list of recyclable materials accepted by the City’s program:

Co-mingled Containers: • Aluminum cans, trays & foil (trays & foil must be cleaned) • Steel cans and tins • PET soda, water, & flavored beverage bottles (#1 clear and green plastic resin) • HDPE milk & juice jugs (#2 clear plastic resin) • HDPE detergent & fabric softener containers (#2 colored plastic resin) • PVC narrow neck containers only (#3 plastic resin) ; such as health & beauty aid products, household cleaners. • LDPE grocery containers (#4 plastic resin) ; such as margarine tubs, frozen desert cups, six and twelve pack rings. • PP grocery containers (#5 plastic resin) ; such as yogurt cups, and narrow neck syrup and ketchup bottles. • #7 plastic resin narrow neck containers o nly. • Plastic buckets, such as kitty litter containers (5 gallon size maximum) . • Glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, green) : no window glass, dinnerware or ceramics.

Residential Paper Fiber: • Newspaper, including inserts (remove plastic sleeves) • Cardboard (no waxed cardboard or p izza b oxes) • Kraft (brown paper) bags • Magazines, catalogs and telephone books • Office, computer, notebook & gift wrap paper (no metal clips, spirals, binders) • Chipboard (cereal, cake & food mix boxes, gift boxes, etc.) • Carrier stock (soda & beer can carrying cases) • Junk mail & envelopes (no plastic cards, stick on labels or unused stamps) • Paper back books (no hard cover books)

Curbside Recycling WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The new recycling service is free of charge to residents in the City of Peoria and will begin on Friday, April 2, 2010. Registration is required for this service along with a one-time refundable deposit of $50 to cover the cost of the cart. Recyclables within the City of Peoria must be in a PDC 95-gallon roll-out cart. All recyclables need to fit in the PDC-provided cart.

Once you are enrolled in service, you will receive a calendar highlighting the once-a- month pick-up date for your area. Service

areas are based on your particular garbage pick-up date and will always be on a Friday, with the exception of holidays. Recyclable items will be listed on the recycling pick-up calendar and on the 95-gallon roll-out cart lid.

Current subscription recycling customers will not be automatically transferred to the new City’s recycling program. Anyone interested in signing up for the program should contact the PDC.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

Hearing Impaired Hearing impaired individuals may obtain additional information through the Illinois Relay Center’s toll free number, 1-800-526- 0844 (TDD only) or 1-800-526-0857 (Voice) . Alternative formats are available for persons with vision impairments.

Safe Needle & Syringe Disposal. Residential households only! NEVER put needles and syringes in your garbage or recycling container. Needles and syringes must be placed into a properly sealed container such as detergent or bleach bottles or proper Sharps containers. Some pharmacies will accept Sharps containers, please consult the Peoria County Solid Waste Management at 309-681-2550.

Paint Paint may be collected at the curb if non-pourable (dried out or mixed with sawdust, woodchips or kitty litter) . You must contact your local paint supply stores or autobody repair shops for acceptance and fees of paints in liquid form.

Nuisance Abatements You can do something about unsightly accumulation of junk or garbage on someone’s private property whether it’s in their yard, driveway or along the alley. Call the City of Peoria Code Enforcement at 494-8654 and state the address. The Nuisance Abatement Inspector will take photos of the problem and send a notice to the property owner to clean up the mess. If the owner fails to act, the inspector will arrange for pick-up and a bill will be sent to the property owner. Charges are assessed against the property for failure to pay the bill.

Dead Animals PDC will pick up dead animals on city right-of-ways within 24 hours of notice during business hours, Monday through Friday, by calling, 494-8850 (M-F, 8a-5p).
