Our 2012/13 season continues in the capital with our mini festival in April, celebrating the life and times of one of the most charismatic and influential French composers of the 20th Century: Francis Poulenc. Half a century after his death, we’ll be performing many of Poulenc’s pivotal compositions and delving deeper into his colourful personal life, as well as focusing on the links between his music and religious beliefs.

Michael Collins conducts a concert dedicated to Poulenc’s woodwind compositions at St Giles’ Cripplegate, featuring an array of solo and chamber performances from City of London Sinfonia’s principal players. Audiences will be transported back to 1920s Paris as our informal concert series CLoSer invites you into a 1920s style Parisian café; the beloved hangout of Poulenc and the movers and shakers of 1920s Paris. The Orchestra performs Poulenc’s stunning Gloria and his Organ Concerto at Southwark Cathedral, conducted by Stephen Layton and accompanied by the superb Holst Singers. BBC Radio Four’s Saturday Live host the Revd Richard Coles and novelist Anne Atkins also join us to consider the effect and

limitations both religion and sexuality have on artists and their work, in a live debate.

For the youngsters our hugely popular family concert series Crash Bang Wallop! returns with two concerts at Cadogan Hall; a brass extravaganza in May, preceded by Beatrix Potter’s much loved Tale of Squirrel Nutkin in March. We then go in search of Mr Enormo Biggins’ Great Fun Park with the award winning children’s poet and author Michael Rosen, as part of Spitalfields Music’s Summer Festival in June.

We return as resident orchestra to the capital’s favourite opera festival, Opera Holland Park, where we perform a deliciously diverse range of operas including Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, and lesser known gems such as Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari’s I gioielli della Madonna.

From the luscious, haunting movement of Finzi’s Prelude for String Orchestra, to the dancing folksong melodies of Holst’s vibrant St Paul’s Suite, this concert captures a snapshot of yesteryear Britain. Incorporating texts by the great British poets – Cotton, Tennyson, Blake, Jonson and Keats – Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings is particularly evocative in its depiction of pastoral Britain. Tenor Ronan Busfield is joined by horn player, Stephen Stirling, for a performance of this unique song-cycle.

Join Squirrel Nutkin and his friends as they introduce you to the sounds of the Orchestra. Composer Stephen McNeff’s fun musical retelling of Beatrix Potter’s delightful classic children’s story offers youngsters a fantastic introduction to the world of classical music. Poulenc and Darius Milhaud were members of ‘Les Six’ a group of early 20th century French composers, who worked in Montparnasse and challenged the status quo of European classical music. Poulenc was particularly fond of woodwind instruments and his chamber music is full of clarity, simplicity, and grace, while Milhaud brought a natural elegance and charm to his compositions, combined with an incredible harmonic sophistication.

Our Principal Conductor Michael Collins conducts as well as performs as soloist on both the clarinet and piano, alongside City of London Sinfonia woodwind principals.

With music inspired by jazz, music hall and the cabaret scene of the so-called “Crazy Years”, we explore the lighter, more humourous side to Poulenc’s music, and the short, atmospheric piano compositions of one of his greatest influences: Erik Satie.

Poulenc’s dormant Catholicism was reawakened in 1936 and had a profound influence on him as a composer. Much of his work thereafter was liturgical in nature and moved away from the irreverence of his youth towards greater depth and meaning. His Organ Concerto is hugely powerful and forbidding, whilst being poetic and emotional at turns; his Gloria is a mixture of solemnity and mischievous exuberance, both in contrast to Ravel’s nostalgic and beautiful miniature Pavane. Hot Tunes, Cold WarThis mini festival explores the influence of jazz on composers from across the Iron Curtain including Britten, Copland and Shostakovitch, as well as considering the impact of the politics of the era on art and wider culture.
