TRANSCRIPT
Dear Members,
“The starting point is a sense of wonder. It can take you into science, it can take you into art. Other human beings are amazing and beautiful!” Mary Catherine Bateson, daughter of anthro-pologist Margaret Mead, and author of “Composing a Life,” spoke these words in a recent interview.
Bateson proposes the analogy of “composition” in contrast to “juggling” when considering the multiple demands on our lives. “Composition” offers a sense of artistic exploration and possibility at every life stage.
When I feel overstressed, I try to slow down and pay attention to beauty and wonder. (And the changing of the seasons is a lovely time to pay attention!) Every bridge or poker game, every luncheon, every bus trip is an opportunity to learn what is beautiful about the person next to you, and reveal your own wonder. I invite you to take—and make—more opportunities to be amazed by the wondrous people all around.

NEWSBRIEF: November-December 2015, January 2016
Jazzin’ at the Shedd, Fashion Show & Raffle, “Artist
Couples”, Jim Kenney, Watercolor Art Show and More!
Early fall here at Dickinson Hall started with a warm-weather excursion along the Chicago River, on an Architectural River Cruise. It concluded with sweater weather and the trees changing colors for the season.
This past season, and the one coming up, reflects one of the best aspects of our community: a great variety of people and programs. A leisurely evening at the Shedd Aquarium, with live jazz music and a buffet spread offered time to stroll and chat. Lectures from Jim Kenney, James Meierhoff, and Barry Bradford inspired debate, memory, and imagination. The familiar rhythm of bridge, movies, mah jongg, and exercise kept a steady pace.
Now we look forward to the holiday season! Traditions such as the Veterans Breakfast, Thanksgiving gathering, Pancake Breakfast, and New Year’s Champagne Brunch will deepen our roots as good neighbors. Trips to Cedarburg, Chicago performance venues, and the Milwaukee Art Museum will broaden our horizons. An exciting Fitness Festival in January will keep our blood pumping in the Midwest cold.
Let’s look forward to a new season!

November Featured Artist Photographer Laurie Giesen will display her photographs of active women in their 80s and 90s through the month of November. The exhibit, previously shown at the Lake Forest Library, features eight local women all engaged in physical activity, whether it be swimming, walking, strength exercise, or boxing.
Laurie is a native of Lake Forest, who has also lived and worked across the country from New York to Seattle. She says, “We all know the power of an image that has truth. I hope this show will serve to inspire others to think of themselves as artists making their selves—both inside and out—their greatest masterpieces.”
Dickinson Hall is pleased to show member and local art in the Great Room hallway. If you are interested in showing your work, please contact Patty Jenkins at 847-810-4679.
