The Police Department consists of a Chief, three Captains, 6 Lieutenants, 22 Sergeants and 127 Police Officers, inaddition to civilian personnel. After sufficient experience in the department, specialization is available to PoliceOfficers in the areas of Patrol, Investigation, Juvenile Services, Motorcycle Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigation,Vice-Narcotic Enforcement, and Canine Handling. An outstanding in-service training program provides officers withextensive, continuous instruction in basic and specialized police techniques. Officers work four days a week, 10hours per day. Three junior colleges and two state colleges in the immediate area offer degrees in Administration ofJustice and pursuit of higher education is encouraged.

COMPENSATION , BENEFITS AND EXPECTATIONSCOMPENSATION , BENEFITS AND EXPECTATIONSCandidates who are successful in our selection process will be hired in a non-sworn capacity as a Police Recruit andplaced in a California POST-approved Basic Recruit Academy. Recruits then receive 968 hours of rigorous andintense training in all aspects of law enforcement. Compensation for this non-sworn, civilian position is $18.00 perhour, plus medical and dental benefits, while in the academy. The process of being selected as a Police Recruit islengthy. It involves a written test, physical agility test, oral interviews, background checks, and physical andpsychological examinations. Candidates selected from this process would start in the next available police academy.

Whether or not a Police Recruit gets hired as a sworn Police Officer following academy graduation will be based onoverall academy performance, evaluations, referrals and availability of positions. The Recruit’s performance will besubject to review by City staff prior to appointment as a regular Police Officer. All new Police Officers serve an 18-month probationary period. Currently, compensation for Police Officers ranges from $3878 to $5201 per month, withfull benefits, additional compensation for certified bilingual skills, and great educational incentives.

COMPENSATIONCOMPENSATION• The salary range is: $4074 - 5201 per month; initial salary placement for Laterals may be dependent

upon experience and qualifications. Progression through the salary range occurs annually, based onsatisfactory performance; an excellent benefits package is also provided. All new Officers serve an 18-monthprobationary period.

• Retirement: Police employees are covered by the “2% at 50” option of the Public Employees’ RetirementSystem (PERS). Currently, employees pay their own 9% contribution on a pre-tax basis; the City alsocontributes. PERS retirement will go to “3% at 50” in October, 2001!

• Educational Incentives: Police Officers are eligible for the following:• 2.5% above base salary for possession of AA/AS;• 5% above base salary for possession of BA/BS OR an Intermediate POST Certificate;• 7.5% above base salary for possession of a BA/BS degree and Intermediate POST Certificate OR for

possession of 90 qualifying semester units;• 10% above base salary for possessing an Advanced POST Certificate, with the ability to increase to

12.5% over time, under special circumstances.• Bilingual Pay: Upon certification, Police Officers may earn additional pay for use of bilingual skills. Spanish,

Vietnamese, Korean, Cambodian, or Laotian-speaking applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.

THE JOB:THE JOB: Level II Reserve Police Officers are “career reserves,” meaning they are not pursuing lawenforcement as their primary occupation, but have a career outside law enforcement or are retired.These Officers work 20 to 80 hours per month performing a range of law enforcement activities underthe supervision of a regular Police Officer. They are assigned to various details such as Patrol, GangSuppression, Bicycle Patrol, Transportation, DUI Checkpoints, Investigation and the Community LiaisonUnit. Additionally, they assist in special community events. Quarterly qualification with firearms isrequired.
