arts news Autumn 2018: Page 4

Local Casey artist, Gino Ciancio was born the son of Italian immigrants in Echuca in 1960. He began his journey into the world of creative arts during a Year 12 art and design course and has continued to expand into the arts world as he studied to achieve his goals.

Over the years, Gino has worked with a range of design studios before finally opening his own art and design studio business. In tandem, he has been driven through his work as an art and design teacher with TAFE for 27 years.

Gino has worked with an amazing range of medium including clay, glass, wood, steel, paper, paints and inks, as well as photography and digital media of all types. Today he puts his creative energy and passion into digital art using an iPad, describing this as his canvas.

Gino has travelled Australia and the world and brings inspiration gathered from his visual experiences. Interestingly, Gino describes himself as being motivated by listening to other people’s stories, adding

another perspective to the visual interpretation. “I can work on several concepts at one time; I have ideas moving about constantly in my mind. When it gets a little crowded up there I journal thoughts, ideas and full concepts on paper… love doing that.” After his travels where he has been able to work from any location, Gino has finally built an art studio to showcase his work and focus his attention. Visit jgcartstudio.com.au to find out more.

Gino is a member of the South Eastern Contemporary Art Network (SECAN), a group of contemporary artists. The group is made up of emerging, mid-career and professional artists who either live or work in Melbourne’s south-east. Gino understands that many artists

struggle to make a living from their art, and through SECAN, is able to provide business support to members.

Don’t miss upcoming exhibitions of the SECAN members, including Gino’s work, at the Gate 6 Gallery, Gate 6 Akoonah Park, Cardinia Street, Berwick. Visit secan.com.au for more information.

New Men’s A cappella chorus is in town!Although they are still to decide on a group name, this men’s A cappella chorus is seeking new members to join. The chorus will sing popular songs from past and more recent years in the barbershop harmony style. In the A cappella chorus, the barbershop lead (tenor) voice sings the melody, the barbershop tenor (counter-tenor) harmonises above the lead, the bass sings the lowest notes and the barbershop baritone finds a fourth harmony note sometimes above and sometimes below the melody line.

The group, who rehearse in Hampton Park, is a satellite chorus to ‘The Melbournaires’, Melbourne’s foremost A capella chorus who sing in the barbershop tradition. This four-part A capella harmony chorus is a member of Barbershop Harmony Australia and is a non-profit organisation. They perform under the Directorship of Robert Simpson, qualified music teacher with extensive experience with choirs in the UK and Australia.

The new chorus will comprise amateur performers who want to be part of a quality singing organisation. If you can hold a tune, love close harmonies, want to perform and would like to become a member, then get in touch.

For more information on how you can get involved, contact Ian Boag on 9776 5690.

Casey Choir

arts news Autumn 2018: Page 7

An insight into Paulien George’s inspiration is shared as she describes her role in the vocal group Voices of Casey. Paulien is the volunteer Manager of Voices of Casey, a vibrant group of singers from Casey and surrounds, under the Music Directorship of Dr Jonathon Welch, AM.

In addition to participating as a member of the choir, as a volunteer she coordinates the many administrative functions of the group. For Paulien, she sees the most significant connection for the group in their love of singing and dedication to do their utmost.

The group originated as part of the 2013 Absolutely Everybody program from the School of Hard Knocks and has gone from strength to strength as they share their joy of singing together. The group attracts enthusiastic amateurs as well as seasoned singers, and Paulien proudly acknowledges the wonderful benefits of belonging to include friendship, fun and joy.

Voices of Casey practice on a weekly basis in Berwick, with Dr Jonathon Welch, AM leading each practice session. Paulien selects the music for each practice session. Starting with a warm-up which can consist of breathing exercises, stretching, singing in rounds or other ways to relax the body and oil the vocal chords, Jonathan always adds something to make it a fun occasion. After this, music is practiced with time for each to practice their own part, whether they be a soprano, alto or baritone. Each part is finally sung by Jonathon, and a recording of this is distributed by Paulien to each member for study at home.

The choir have performed at many events, small and large, including the opening celebrations at Bunjil Place in October 2017. During 2018, Paulien and the choir are busy practicing and planning for a range of concerts including a themed concert at Hampton Park Baptist Church on Saturday 12 May. Here they will sing a repertoire of songs about fire, snow, mountains and water, aptly titled ‘The Elements Mark II’. In addition, they are planning a concert to be held in Casey during Social Inclusion Week in November,

themed to sing out about family violence prevention.

People over the age of 18 years are welcome to come along and join in! It is helpful if you can sing in tune, but the ability to read music is not essential. Paulien’s genuine passion and joy for singing with a choir is positively infectious.

For more information, or to get involved, phone Paulien George on 9769 8611 or email [email protected].
