At the tourist information you are able to acquire a free fanfold that describes the Walk of Wagner in further detail. Bayreuth City Centre Bayreuth by bus – Route map Start your tour at the tourist information located on Opern- straße 22. The Wagner bench 1 in front of the tourist infor- mation’s entrance invites you to take a souvenir photograph with Richard Wagner himself! Only a few metres away on the other side of the street is the Margravial Opera House 2 . Not only was this opera house labelled a UNESCO World Her- itage site in 2012 but it is also one of Europe´s most beautiful Baroque theatres, still today it bears testimony to the life and influence of Margravine Wil- helmine. An all-sense encom- passing multimedia presenta- tion will guide you through the attractive world of Wilhemine’s Baroque opera house which inspires the muse and allows the arts to come to life. Through the interaction of architecture, paint- ing, music and drama visitors will experience how this extraor- dinary monument of Baroque festival culture developed. Next you should stroll along the Rich- ard-Wagner-Straße towards “Haus Wahnfried” 3 . This is the former residential house of Richard Wagner that served as will, after a short walk, reach the Jean-Paul-Square. Here, next to the Friedrichs-Forum that was built within the walls of the for- mer margravial riding arena, you will find the former Gymnasium of the city. The corner house was home to Bayreuth’s first university which was founded in 1742. Now turn off towards town and in to the “Friedrichstraße” that was creat- ed in 1730 and is full of splendid townhouses and noble residenc- es. Your route will lead you past the Steingraeber Piano manufac- tory 7 that used to be responsi- ble for tuning Richard Wagner’s pianos. Opposite is the former last resi- dence of Jean Paul 8 . The poet Jean Paul was the first profes- sional poet of his time. His pub- lications were highly circulated and even though his literary compositions are not easy to read for the contemporary read- er he is still highly admired and adored. Next, on the left side of the street and through the Steingraeber passage you will arrive at Richard Wagners first Bayreuth residence in the “Dammallee 7” 9 Wagner began living in this city apart- the “Maximilianstraße”, the old town square and vibrant city cen- tre. Whilst you will find the Old Baroque Town Hall, which is now home to the Art Museum, on the left to the “Brautgasse” you will be able to see the Old Palace directly opposite. 11 . From 1603 the Old Palace was the margravi- al seat of government until it fell victim to fire in the 18 th century. The margravial domicile was then moved to the New Palace in the “Ludwigstraße”. Continue on through the arch in the palace courtyard and into the inner patio from which you will be able to see the Palace Church 12 and the Palace Tower. The Palace Church also known in Bayreuth as the “Hofkirche” was erected 1753-1758 by the margravial couple Wilhelmine and Friedrich. Upon their explic- it request both were laid to rest there with their daughter Fried- erike after their death. The over ground crypt beneath the organ gallery remains to this day. Directly next to the Palace Church is the Palace Tower. This octagonal tower was built on older foundations in 1565 and natively a visit to the “Festspiel- haus” 15 located on the so called Green Hill is worthwhile. The Festival House is unique in its architecture and acoustics and is among the biggest opera stages worldwide. Richard Wagner had it constructed 1872 on the north periphery of Bayreuth in order to be able to dedicate himself fully to his musical works. On the “Walk of Wagner” you will be able to reach the “Festspielhaus” within 30 mins. On your way you will learn a lot about the big com- poser but if the approximately two kilometres walk is a little too far for you, don’t hesitate to ment in Autumn 1872 after he had spent the summer in Hotel Fantaisie in Donndorf not far from Bayreuth. Now your journey will lead you further into the inner city through the “Sophienstraße”. After 50 metres turn right in to the “Kirchgasse”, after a few steps you will be directly in front of the city church 10 . This mighty, gothic church goes back to a Romanesque church built in the year 1270, the remains of these Romanesque walls can still be seen today in the lower part of the north tower walls. The appearance of the church now- adays dates back to 1375 and its two slate covered steeples that are connected via a stone bridge are one of Bayreuth’s well-known landmarks. Onwards through the cities narrow alleys you will reach dates back to a template sketch by Leonardo da Vinci. Only once, namely in Bayreuth, was da Vinci´s idea of a tower in which a nearly stepless path twists around a spiral stairway to facil- itate the transport of goods real- ized. The Palace Tower is hence one of Bayreuth´s biggest and oldest landmarks. On through a passageway you will reach the Baroque Palace Ter- races 13 . It is here where you can gaze upon a statue of Wilhelm- ine just slightly to your right. Now go down the stairs and over the bridge of the “Mühlgraben”, a small stream laid open around 20 years ago and that the Bayreuth people call the “Canale Grande” after its famous archetype. If you now cast a backward glance you will see one of the most classically portrayed views of Bayreuth 14 . A splendid view of the Palace Terraces, the two Palais by the court architect Carl von Gontard, the Old Palace and the octagonal tower in the back- ground can be seen from here. Follow the “Mühlgraben” for a few metres and you shall end up at your starting point. Alter- provide a recreational landscape for everybody. At the west end of the court garden, passing the German Freemason Museum you will reach the New Palace 5 . This palace, erected by the French architect Joseph Saint- Pierre, served as a new city resi- dence to Margravine Wilhelmine and her husband Friedrich after the Old Palace suffered immense fire damage. Margravine Wil- helmine took great influence in its design - amongst other things she designed the Mirror Shards Cabinet and the Old Music Room herself. Also well worth seeing is the Palm Room with its precious nutwood panelling that is char- acteristic of the Bayreuth Rococo style. Continuing on from the New Pal- ace you turn off to the left and a domicile to the Wagner family right up until the 1960’s. Richard and Cosima Wagner’s graves are situated in the garden behind the estate, it is also here that you can visit the redesigned Richard -Wagner-Museum. Here the beautiful court gardens 4 invite you for a stroll. The origins of this park can be traced back to the 16th century. In the year 1753 the park was largely expanded by orders of Margravine Wil- helmine. Later on, also Wagner himself enjoyed promenading through this timeless park. Today the court gardens are nicknamed the “green lungs” of the city and use Bayreuth’s excellent public transport. The bus lines 305 and 309, which depart from the closely located central bus sta- tion called ZOH, regular- ly stop at the “Festspiel- haus”. Tip: Visit further sights that we owe Wilhelm- ine. One example would be the Hermitage, a his- torical park just outside the city. You can reach it by car or with public transportation (bus lines 302 and 303). Further sights well worth seeing, dating back to margravial era are the rock garden in Sanspareil (about 25km west of Bayreuth) as well as the Palace Fantaisie in Donndorf which was erected for Wilhelmine’s daughter Fried- erike. Its park, which shares the same name, is now home to the Garden Art Museum. Another suggestion is the visit of the Wilhelminen landscape in which the Bavarian horticultural show was hosted in 2016. City Tour „Historical Bayreuth“ During the approximately two hour long city tour, guided by a knowl- edgeable tour guide, you will be shown the city’s model replica locat- ed in the historical museum. After- wards you will pass through the old part of the inner city towards the new palace and stroll through the “Hofgarten” to House Wahnfried where the grave of Richard and Cosi- ma Wagner is situated. The Palace Church also known in Bayreuth as the “Hofkirche” was erected 1753-1758 by the margravial couple Wilhelmine and Friedrich. Upon their explic-it request both were laid to rest there with their daughter Fried-erike after their death. The over ground crypt beneath the organ gallery remains to this day.Directly next to the Palace Church is the Palace Tower. This octagonal tower was built on older foundations in 1565 and

natively a visit to the “Festspiel-haus” 15 located on the so called Green Hill is worthwhile. On your way you will learn a lot about the big com-poser but if the approximately two kilometres walk is a little too far for you, don’t hesitate to

ment in Autumn 1872 after he had spent the summer in Hotel Fantaisie in Donndorf not far from Bayreuth. The appearance of the church now-adays dates back to 1375 and its two slate covered steeples that are connected via a stone bridge are one of Bayreuth’s well-known landmarks. Onwards through the cities narrow alleys you will reach

dates back to a template sketch by Leonardo da Vinci. Only once, namely in Bayreuth, was da Vinci´s idea of a tower in which a nearly stepless path twists around a spiral stairway to facil-itate the transport of goods real-ized. The Palace Tower is hence one of Bayreuth´s biggest and oldest landmarks.

On through a passageway you will reach the Baroque Palace Ter-races 13 . It is here where you can gaze upon a statue of Wilhelm-ine just slightly to your right. A splendid view of the Palace Terraces, the two Palais by the court architect Carl von Gontard, the Old Palace and the octagonal tower in the back-ground can be seen from here. Follow the “Mühlgraben” for a few metres and you shall end up at your starting point. Alter-

provide a recreational landscape for everybody. At the west end of the court garden, passing the German Freemason Museum you will reach the New Palace 5 . This palace, erected by the

French architect Joseph Saint-Pierre, served as a new city resi-dence to Margravine Wilhelmine and her husband Friedrich after the Old Palace suffered immense fire damage. Margravine Wil-helmine took great influence in its design - amongst other things she designed the Mirror Shards Cabinet and the Old Music Room herself. Also well worth seeing is the Palm Room with its precious

nutwood panelling that is char-acteristic of the Bayreuth Rococo style. Continuing on from the New Pal-ace you turn off to the left and

a domicile to the Wagner family right up until the 1960’s.Richard and Cosima Wagner’s graves are situated in the garden behind the estate, it is also here that you can visit the redesigned Richard -Wagner-Museum. Here the beautiful court gardens 4

invite you for a stroll. The origins of this park can be traced back to the 16th century. In the year 1753 the park was largely expanded by orders of Margravine Wil-helmine. Later on, also Wagner himself enjoyed promenading through this timeless park. Today the court gardens are nicknamed the “green lungs” of the city and

use Bayreuth’s excellent public transport. The bus lines 305 and 309, which depart from the closely located central bus sta-tion called ZOH, regular-ly stop at the “Festspiel-haus”.

Tip: Visit further sights that we owe Wilhelm-ine. One example would be the Hermitage, a his-

torical park just outside the city. You can reach it by car or with public transportation (bus lines 302 and 303).Further sights well worth seeing, dating back to margravial era are the rock garden in Sanspareil (about 25km west of Bayreuth) as well as the Palace Fantaisie in Donndorf which was erected for Wilhelmine’s daughter Fried-erike. Its park, which shares the same name, is now home to the Garden Art Museum. Another suggestion is the visit of the Wilhelminen landscape in which the Bavarian horticultural show was hosted in 2016.

City Tour „Historical Bayreuth“During the approximately two hour long city tour, guided by a knowl-edgeable tour guide, you will be shown the city’s model replica locat-ed in the historical museum. After-wards you will pass through the old part of the inner city towards the new palace and stroll through the “Hofgarten” to House Wahnfried where the grave of Richard and Cosi-ma Wagner is situated.
