1 Mayor Tran, Vice Mayor Grilli and Council Members, AFFORDABLE HOUSING WEEK May 11 18, 2018 was Affordable Housing Week.During this week-long celebration, Planning Department staff attended: a) AARP Livable Communities Charette; b) Accessory Dwelling Units; c) Homebuyer Assistance; d) Vallco Community Forum; e) Mind the Affordable Gap; f) Law Foundation Gentrification and Displacement; g) Affordable Housing Finance; h) SB827: Where Do WE Go From Here?; and i) Policy Luncheon. City Council members held a Special Meeting of the City Council and had a tour of Apex Apartments on Saturday, May 12, 2018. It’s Here! The all new style Ballot Box for your voted Vote-by-Mail ballots for the Gubernatorial Primary Election of June 5, 2018 is now available in the Milpitas City Hall lobby. In 2018, a new larger drop-off box in a new location for completed ballots sent by the County Registrar to those who vote at home was delivered and installed in the rotunda. It is a large white metal container with a pull down handle for inserting ballot envelopes. The box is securely attached to a lobby post and cannot be removed or opened by anyone other than Registrar’s authorized staff. It will be available through election day on Tuesday, June 5 for all Santa Clara County voters. For those seeking a ballot or for any questions about the primary election, call 408-299-8683. GREAT WORK, FIRE DEPARTMENT! Fire Department received a wonderful phone call Friday morning from a Father at a hospital with his son who wanted to thank Milpitas Fire for saving his son. The son was involved in an SUV T-bone accident a few nights ago, but had a seatbelt on. The Father is a driver in the Milpitas area and has witnessed Milpitas Fire in action on several car accident scenes and wanted to recognize the great work our Fire personnel do day after day! Ventura County Fire sent a THANK YOU letter for our team’s response and assistance to last year’ s Thomas Fire when we sent a Fire Engine and a Strike Team Leader. National River Cleanup Day is Sat., May 19 from 9AM to Noon: Milpitas will host three creek cleanup sites at Coyote, Tularcitos and Los Coches Creeks. Community promotions will occur on social media, in The Milpitas Post and City website and KMLP-15. The door hanger was distributed on Monday, May 7th. Stormwater Social Media Campaign, April - June: Information about reducing plastic litter and reusable beverage cups along with other ideas that reduce waste is part of an annual social media campaign that started in April and runs through June 2018. The campaign is featured on the City’s Facebook account and is targeted at all desktop systems and mobile devices in Milpitas. A report about campaign reach and “likes” will be provided to Council in late June 2018. Sample posts are on page 6. NEW FIRE ENGINES have arrived in Sacramento at the local vendor. Delivery is forthcoming. Thanks to Finance for the help in acquiring these units. The Fire Department mechanic completed repairs on the Sutphen Aerial Truck. Thanks to Public Works for the hard work on this project. FIRE TRAINING: The Fire Department continues to build our technical rescue training facility. The “rubble pile” is built to simulate collapsed structures following an earthquake. We also trained six personnel as designated infection control officers. This is an OSHA compliance piece for reducing employee exposures to blood borne pathogens. FIRE RECRUITMENT: The Human Resources assisted the Fire Department in receiving 500 applications for the current firefighter open recruitment. CURRENT EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. The City is currently operating with 44 vacancies (approximately 12.5% vacancy rate Citywide). Human Resources is accepting applications this week for the following employment opportunities. Building permits were issued to:

1. KB Homes Developer, for the construction of three, 3-story buildings with a total of 22 units out of 98 townhome residential units’ development at Lucente located at 1256 Piper Drive at an estimated construction cost of $ 6.7M.

2. DR Horton, for the construction of two, 3-story building with total of 14 units out of 241 townhome residential units’ development located at 1501 Centre Pointe Drive at an estimated construction cost of $4.8M.

3. Pulte Homes developer of Metro Flats & Rows, 303 townhome and single family units’ development located at 1401 South Milpitas Boulevard (formerly Milpitas Station) for the construction of two buildings consists of 12 units at a total estimated construction cost of $3.71M.

4. Flex, electronics manufacturing company, for tenant improvements at their facility located at 927 Gibraltar Drive at an estimated construction cost of $300,000.

5. Kaiser Permanente, for tenant improvements at their facility located at 770 East Calaveras Boulevard at an estimated construction cost of $209,000.

Shell Station submitted a building permit application for the replacement of storage tanks and underground fuel piping located at 1780 South Main Street at an estimated construction cost of $550,000. Occupancy permit applications were submitted by three new businesses moving to Milpitas:

1. Bliss, a shoe store located at Great Mall. 2. CPA Shah an Accountancy Corporation, accounting office relocating from Sunnyvale to 500

East Calaveras Boulevard. 3. Salt Tree, women’s clothing store located at Great Mall.

The following businesses have received final inspection and are now open for operation:

i. CEC Capital management LLC, semiconductor design office relocating from San Jose to 1900 McCarthy Boulevard.

ii. MED appliances services, general office for home appliance repair business relocating from Sunnyvale to 16 Corning Avenue.

iii. Allegra Home Care LLC, Office for care assistance for elderly located at 40 North Park Victoria Drive.

Constructions Update: Green Foot and Spa located at 1734 North Milpitas Boulevard: To allow earlier start of operation, a temporary occupancy permit was issued to Green Foot and Spa, a foot and spa massage parlor. South Main Senior lifestyles, 5-story, senior assisted living and congregate care facility with 199 residential unit’s development by SRM Development located at 1620 South Main Street: The aerial photo on the right shows the excavation is in progress for the South Main Senior Lifestyles development.

EVENTS THIS WEEK: Last weekend, Police Chief Armando Corpuz attended the Silicon Valley Latino Fireside Chat featuring Councilmember Bob Nuñez and David Lopez. The Event was held on Saturday, May 12th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the San Jose City College Milpitas Extension Campus located at 1450 Escuela Parkway.

On Sunday, May 13, 2018, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm, Milpitas Police Department Field Evidence Technicians held a Jr. Detective Party for an 11-year old girl. The party was auctioned off at a Milpitas Rotary Event. Please see photos below.

Human Resources Department hosted the Annual Employees Service Awards Luncheon on Wednesday May 16th, celebrating employees who have been with the City of Milpitas for 30+, 25, 20, 15, 10, and 5 years. The Police Community Relations Unit presented a Run, Hide, Fight! Presentation to Milpitas Unified School District staff on Thursday, May 17th at 3:30pm. On the same day, a Crossing Guard Luncheon was held at 11:30am to thank Crossing Guards for their service and recognize those with perfect attendance. At 7:00pm, Chief Corpuz, Command Staff, and officers attended Burnett Elementary’ s Open House located at 400 Fanyon Street. On Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 6:00pm to 9:30pm, the Milpitas Police Department held their third Citizens Police Academy class. The group learned about Arrest Control Tactics from Officers Jamison and Le, and participated in hands-on scenario. Dispatcher Hagen gave an introduction to 911 Communications/Dispatching, and Officer Lynch and K9 Ares gave an introduction to the K9 Unit. (Please see photos below)
