A Legendary Evening!Benefiting The Child Abuse Prevention Programs Of Family Compass

Co-chairs Brynn Bagot Allday, Amy Camp and Michelle Meadows, with honor-ary chairs Diane and Daryl Johnston, invite you to A Legendary Evening benefiting Fam-ily Compass (formerly Child Abuse Prevention Center) on Saturday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ritz-Carlton. Kelly Hogland Compton will receive the “Spirit of Compassion Award”.

This year’s event promises to be an energetic evening of cocktails, dinner, music, silent and live auctions, and mingling with some of Texas’s living legends. Moving away from the celebrity waiter theme of the

past, guests will enjoy engaging dinner conversation with a favorite luminary, bid on one-of-a-kind auction items, and be inspired by larger than life icons who have helped guide our commu-

nity through their work in business, sports, philanthropic endeavors and entertain-ment. The inimitable Dale Hansen will serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.

Legends and luminaries confirmed to date include: professional golfer Justin and Amanada Leonard; former Dallas Stars goalie Marty Turco; Dr. Ron

Anderson, retired President and CEO of Parkland Hospital; WFAA-TV news anchor and reporter Gloria Campos; country musician

Rudy Gatlin; American Idol season 10 contestant Tim Halperin; restaurateurs Tracy Rathbun and Lynae Fearing; journalist, in-vestigative reporter and teacher Hugh Aynesworth; Miss Texas USA 2013 Natlie Clarke, Dallas County Commissioner Mike Cantrell; former NFL player James Yarbrough; 98.7 KLUV’s

host Jody Dean; reality TV star Melissa Poe; co-founder of DSVP Bob Wright; Uncle Julio’s CEO Todd Conger; res-taurateur Mico Rodriguez, founder of M Crowd Restau-rant Group; PR maven Martha Tiller, President and CEO of Martha Tiller Company; and model/actor Kris Clinton.

Individual tickets are $250; sponsorships be-gin at $1,000 through $25,000. For sponsor and ticket information, visit www.family-compass.org

The mission of Family Compass is to build healthy families and a strong Dallas community by preventing child abuse and neglect. There are four educational and therapeu-tic programs for families at increased risk for child abuse.

Work is well underway on the 2013 Fashion Show & Luncheon, and they are excited to share the progress. Please mark your calendars for May 6. They will return to Brook Hollow Golf Club where Jan Strimple will, once again, produce one of the liveliest and most exciting fashion shows of the year. Tickets are $250 and about 650 guests are expected. Chairing the event are Karen Dealey and Nancy Bierman. Honorary Chairmen for the will be Nancy Perot, Suzanne McGee, Carolyn Rathjen, Katherine Reeves, and Sarah Perot. They are thanked for their support, along with their mom, Margot Perot, who was the founder of this event. It is particularly special to honor these women who contribute so much to our Dallas community and for their continued support of The Salva-tion Army. Nerissa Van Hempstill and TOOTSIE’s (Preston Center location) will serve as Chair of the Chic Bou-tique. TOOTSIE’s hosted the ‘Shop ‘til you drop….off’ experience on Easter weekend. Members dropped off their gently worn clothing and accesso-ries donations for the Chic Boutique and received a $25 gift card in return. TOOTSIE’s hosted another special event in February. The event was held at the store and included modeling of luncheon dresses by some of the Auxiliary and Echelon members, re-freshments, plus a 10% discount on all purchases that evening. The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary is comprised of outstanding women in the commu-nity who through their influence or ac-tivity can further the work of The Salva-tion Army. The group provides effective support for various programs through-out the year. The Salvation Army DFW Metroplex Command serves five coun-ties: Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton, and Ellis. They care for the poor, feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and befriend the friendless.

Jennifer DeLaughter and Elizabeth Farr are chairing this major fundraiser for it’s 25th anniversary. Tickets are $150 or $1,250 for a table. Troy Aik-man and Roger Staubach have been heavily involved with the CCF luncheon since the beginning. Roger said, “It is a privilege to be involved with this wonderful organization.” The Children’s Cancer Fund 25th Annual Luncheon and Fashion Show brings together children, celebrities and sponsors for an unforgettable and heartwarming ex-perience. The Luncheon and Fashion Show raises funds for children’s cancer research at Children’s Medical Center while serving as a positive social-psy-chological experience for children un-dergoing cancer treatment. Celebrities and our distinguished sponsors escort the children down the runway in outfits of their choosing donated by Dillard’s. The Luncheon and Fashion Show is a day to rejoice in successes, reflect on losses and look forward to making childhood cancer curable. Nationwide 46 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. Each year, more than 300 children and adolescents at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas are newly di-agnosed with cancer, with more than 650 children receiving therapy at any given time. Through CCF’s work, the survival rate for all childhood cancers is now close to 80%, significantly better than the 50% chance a child was giv-en 30 years ago. The increase in sur-vival is a huge improvement for some cancers, but some other childhood cancers still have a less than 50% cure rate. There is much work left to be done. By joining together, we can do more to find cures for childhood can-cers. Children’s Cancer Fund supports families and doctors in the fight against childhood cancer. Through strategic investments, we champion real results in research and provide care for our North Texas community.

With the sound and spirit of a true rock legend, the songs of Rodriguez have gained an audience around the world. An inventive and innovative lyricist, known simply by one name - Rodri-guez created two lost classic albums: Cold Fact and Coming from Reality back in the 1960s inbetween shifts at Detroit’s auto plants and factories. Tapping directly into the social angst of generations before and of those to come, Rodriguez is as relevant today as his original recordings from the early 70s. His unique blend of psychedelic folk-rock has withstood the test of time and lives on for a new genera-tion of enthusiastic listeners. The suc-cess of Searching For Sugar Man, the critically-acclaimed documentary directed by Malik Bendjelloul and the film’s soundtrack album has led to an incredible renaissance for Rodriguez, and was the subject of a CBS “60 Min-utes” segment which aired in October. A man always ahead of his time, Ro-driguez’s music still resonates today as it pulls at the heartstrings and pierces the collective social conscience. His songs are fueled with his passionate and poetic critique of lost love, missed opportunities, and the struggle to find hope in a decaying inner city. Now there is a resurgence of interest in his music and his unbelievable true story has reestablished his rightful place in music history–fueling a renewed ap-preciation for his music and sparking successful tours around the world. His songs and story have inspired legions of fans, artists, writers, filmmakers, and fellow musicians internationally. Rein-terpretations and remixes of his work have been recorded by artists such as Paolo Nutini, David Holmes, and Nas. Rodriguez’s amazing discovery of fame in South Africa is told in the documen-tary Searching for Sugar Man which continues to receive accolades and awards.

They used the finest athletes

of the age as models and as

the Greeks practiced sport-

ing in the nude, sculptors were

able to observe the human

form in a wide range of poses.

They used these models as a basic form to cre-

ate works centered on the favorite subject matter

of the times- the Gods. They believed that their

Gods were like humans, only more spectacular

and beautiful and they worked tirelessly to cre-

ate works they felt were perfect replications of

ideal form and beauty. Likewise, the Greeks had

a large amount of marble at their disposal which

they used freely for architecture as well as art

which contributed to delicately smooth sculp-

tures we now hold as the classic Greek style. The

Roman learned sculpture and painting primarily

from the Greeks and they helped to advance the

art form later in history. Iconic marble and bronze

sculptures, vessels, funerary objects, and jew-

elry all explored the human form, some dating

back to the second millennium B.C. This exhi-

bition is organized by ten thematic sections de-

picting the various ways the Greeks experiment-

ImpressIons of europemartin rico

This exhibition is the first ever comprehensive exhibition of the work of Martin Rico y Ortega, one of the most important Spanish painters of the second half of the 19th century. Rico was born in 1833 in Madrid, Spain during a time of civil unrest which eventually led to a civil war through the 1830s and 40s. In the 1860‘s, he traveled across Europe, hiking through Switzerland, Brittany and England to study the landscapes of those regions. His sketchbooks from this era show his varied interests. He also traveled to perfect his own style as he imitated the work of the leading landscape artists of the day until he discovered the light and life of Italy in 1873, where he truly developed his artistic style and created his most

notable works. From his very first trip to the city until his death, the artist spent nearly every summer creating his romantic real-life art in

Venice. He is best known for his light-filled paintings of the architecture and traditional scenes in and around Venice, Italy. Rico is revered for completing his works en plein air and many of his most beloved works were created as he traveled the waterways of venice via gondola, selecting the very best angles and scenes from that unique perspective. Many of his other subjects include urban landscapes of Paris and rural scenes from his native Spain. It was not only landscape setting that captured the artists attention. His earlier works indicate an interest in both European men and women and the animals which populated the cities. This exhibition will

feature 106 works of art.

Often described as a Neo-Dadaist, artist Jasper Johns is pri-marily known for his paintings which draw their inspiration from pop culture. He is perhaps best known for his 1954 painting entitled “Flag” which was inspired by a dream. Many of his ear-lier works focused on simple elements such as flags, letters, numbers, maps and even targets.

Johns later began to redefine his subjects and his treatment of subject matter so that he could convey the meaning of the work solely through the portrayal of conventional symbols and iconography. When the artist works with canvas, his approach is typically thick and painterly.

He is also known to incorporate such media as encaustic and plaster relief into his works. When the artist works with sculp-ture, he creates the sculpture in wax first and then casts the work in bronze. He then treats the surface of the sculpture to develop a patina. In many of his sculptures during the wax phase of their creation, he creates impressions before casting them.

Many of these impressions include letter blocks, keys, news-print, footprints, hand prints and stencils. Since 1960, the art-ist has worked in a variety of printmaking techniques with a special emphasis in lithography.

Using lithography he was able to print versions of the subjects which fill many of his paintings. In 1976, he partnered with Samuel Beckett to create a book entitled “Foirades/Fizzles” which includes 33 etchings and five text fragments by Beckett. Since the 1980s, Johns has produced approximately four to five paintings a year.

From fields of endless bluebon-nets and sunny wildflowers in Mason County, to old weathered schoolhous-es in Gillespie County, and continuing on to the unique perspectives of the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall, this exhibition of finely crafted photographic prints by Scot Miller, Alan Ross and R.P. Washburne features a wide range of stunning Texas Hill Country imagery. In addition to the fine prints on display, High Definition video of the LBJ Ranch shot by Artist-in-Park, Scot Miller, will be screened in the gallery through-out the exhibition along with audio recordings of telephone conversa-tions between LBJ and others. Artist Scot Miller is a native Texan. He began working with photography in the early 1970s. Through his work, he attempts to inspire an appreciation and under-standing of the uniqueness of places such as Yosemite, Walden, the Maine Woods, the Texas Hill Country and the Great Trinity Forest. Alan Ross served as Ansel Adams’ Photographic Assis-tant in Carmel from 1974 to 1979, and by doing so, has earned an interna-tional reputation as a specialist in the art of black-and-white photography, not just as an artist, but also as an educator and a master printer. He was personally selected by Ansel in 1975 to print his Yosemite Special Edition neg-atives. As an artist, Alan is best known for his tonally exquisite black-and-white photographs of the American west. R.P. Washburne’s photographs have appeared regularly in D Magazine since 2005. He publishes travel stories alongside his photography in both D and the Robb Report and presently shoots Major League Baseball games for D Magazine’s sports blog, Inside Corner. In 2003, his first solo exhibit, a collection of photographs he shot of volunteer doctors in remote areas of Haiti, was shown in Chattanooga.

Fela!Music & lyrics of Fela Kuti

This new musical is based on the music and lyrics of the late Nigerian singer, Fela Kuti, the founder of Afro-beat. The storyline follows Fela Kuti as young activist and composer who, in 1977 had nearly 1,000 Nigerian gov-ernment soldiers who were tasked with ending his public performances at a nightclub in Lagos. This famed night-club, Shrine in Lagos, had become a popular gathering place for youth who were rebelling against Nigeria’s military dictatorship at the time. The musical is described as part historical drama and part musicology lesson as it shows how Kuti blended the deeply tribal feel of the West African drum-beats, with the blues-style rough guitar riffs and paired that sound with call and response vocals. Kuti then fights to establish his own identity, wrestling with concepts of staying true to his civil activism contrasted by the overwhelm-ing urge to give way to fame and he-donism that comes with it. He begins to use his fame to further his political pursuits as his lyrics become overtly political, criticizing Nigeria’s military re-gime. The regime responds with esca-lating acts of violence which culminate into an army raid of the Kalakuta re-public, a communal compound which housed Fela Kuti’s band, his family and his recording studio. The raid resulted in the torture of Kuti, his wives, other communal members and the death of his mother who was thrown from a window. Fela passed away in August of 1997 reportedly from HIV/AIDS and over one million people attended his funeral. His legacy continues to be one of courage and his music is still alive in nearly 50 albums that are bought and heard all across the world where his message of political transparency, justice and human rights is still as rel-evant today as it was in the early days of his life.

He has just suffered a nervous breakdown in his classroom and is en route to a sanitar-ium. At the mission they find an elderly priest named Father Doherty and his acolyte and fashion son, Don Tabaha. Iron Man 3 continues the epic adven-tures of the world’s favorite billionaire-inventor-Super Hero, Tony Stark. The latest installment pits Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a har-rowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the ques-tion that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book Su-per Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963, had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. In the Marvel cin-ematic universe, all events that happen within each film have a direct influence and consequence in future films and franchises. For Tony Stark the events and encounters he faced in Marvel’s The Avengers may be behind him, but he is still working hard to balance the demands of his own personal life. For Robert Downey Jr. the journey of Tony Stark in the Iron Man franchise is one that is very relatable to audiences. “The great thing about ‘Iron Man 3’ is that we really are going back to kind of an extension and continuation of some of the things that made the franchise fly to begin with,” says Downey. “With the execution and incredible success of Marvel’s The Avengers, we’re af-forded the opportunity to not have to set up another film and can really explore the character of Tony Stark in ways that are very organic and con-nectable and play to the strength of the franchise.”

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in Fast & Furious 6. Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favorites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Elsa Pataky are joined by newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano. Since Dom (played by Vin Diesel) and Brian’s (played Paul Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe. But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incom-plete. Meanwhile, Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson) has been track-ing an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose mastermind is aided by a ruth-less second-in-command revealed to be the love Dom thought was dead, Letty (played by Michelle Rodriguez). The only way to stop the criminal out-fit is to outmatch them at street level, so Hobbs asks Dom to assemble his elite team in London. Payment? Full pardons for all of them so they can return home and make their families whole again. Building on the worldwide blockbuster success of Fast Five and taking the action, stunts and narrative to even greater heights, Fast & Furious 6 sees director Justin Lin back behind the camera for the fourth time. He is supported by longtime producers Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, who welcome producer Clayton Townsend back to the series. Fast & Furious 6 was writ-ten by Chris Morgan- who is a veteran to the Fast and Furious franchise- having also written the third, fourth and fifth film’s screenplays. Texas Ballet Theater is presenting a celebration of two cultures, life, heroism and Balanchine with the TBT Springfest. The fes-tival will take place on the first and last weekend of the month.

Weekend one will be Val Caniparoli’s exuberant Lambarena, Glen Tetley’s Voluntaries and three beautiful pas de

deux. Weekend two, Memorial Day weekend, will feature Ben Stevenson’s Mozart Requiem, a moving tribute to the United States troops and George Balanchine’s dazzling Theme and Vari-

ations. Prior, live jazz music will be provided by K2K Music, themed exhibits in the lobby,

the Arts district food trucks along with festival food and beverage items available for purchase from Wolfgang Puck. In addition, TBT and Ben Stevenson will be honoring prestigious war vet-

erans, including a Tuskegee Airman, on-stage during Memorial Day weekend. Attendees will be exhilarated by the glorious and exuberant

production of Val Caniparoli’s Lambarena. This visually stunning feast for the eyes and ears will

treat the audience to a celebration of two cultures where incredible choreography, dancing, African

rhythms and the melodies of Bach are infused to delight every soul! Also on the program is the

North Texas premiere of world renowned choreog-rapher Glen Tetley’s critically acclaimed Voluntar-

ies. Intensely personal, it is a tribute to the memory of choreographer John Cranko. Performed by 17

dancers, Voluntaries is a dance of life, death, hope and despair that exalts the freedom and potential of

movement. It is an inward score with a beautiful sensi-bility of lyricism and emotional power. Back by popular

demand and critically acclaimed, Texas Ballet Theater presents Ben Stevenson’s Mozart Requiem. Mozart’s

music comes alive with this tribute to heroism that features a magnificent cast of the men of Texas Ballet

Theater. Audiences can experience this highly rated work as grieving moments give way to joy, affirmation

and majesty in honor of Memorial Day weekend! With glittering costumes, glorious choreography and demanding

rigorous technical precision, George Balanchine’s Theme and Variations is a vision of the Imperial Ballet in

its heyday at the Mariinksy Theatre. Classical, romantic and modernist all at once and it has been said that Theme and Variations

is the “niece” of The Sleeping Beauty - bringing 19th century ballet to the
