Passivent Aircool is a range of controllableinsulated ventilators primarily forinstallation in external façades incommercial and similar buildings.

The electrically-actuated dampers providecontrolled air intake and extract in naturalventilation systems, and may also be used for air intake or extract in mechanicalventilation systems. They are particularlysuitable for night cooling strategies, wheredaytime heat build-up is dissipated from thestructure during the night, producing lowerinternal air temperatures with a reducedneed for daytime cooling or air conditioning.Natural ventilation methods can save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, andreduce or eliminate the capital and runningcosts of ventilation or air conditioning plant.

Quality assuranceThe systems and processes by which theproduct are manufactured have beenappraised under BS EN ISO 9001 whichcovers design, development, manufacture, and installation (if by approved installers),giving an independently audited andmaintained assurance that the products willmeet their intended purpose.

Sustainability assuranceAll Passivent manufacturing is accredited toISO 14001, the international standard forenvironmental management systems.Passivent are committed to minimising ourimpact on the environment using recycledand recyclable materials where possible.

PERFORMANCE

Ventilator performancePassivent can advise on the number andsize of ventilators needed according toair flow volume required (see Services, back cover).

Fire performanceMaterials used for internal frame anddampers when closed achieve a Class 1rating when tested to BS 476: Part 7.

Weather performanceThe external louvres provide 98.6% rainrejection when independently tested atBSRIA to BS EN 13030. When tested toBS EN 1027 the closed ventilators arewatertight at over 1000Pa pressure.

Air leakage performanceWhen tested the air leakage rate of theclosed ventilators is 0.57 m3/hour/m at50Pa pressure. The linear metre lengthis defined as the perimeter of the unitplus the total length of the louvre-to-louvre contact. This equates to anapproximate value in terms of face areaof 9.0m3/hour/m2 at 50Pa pressure(depending on unit size).

Thermal insulation performanceAverage calculated U-value of theventilators is 1.1W/m2K in wallapplications.

Controls and sensorsVentilation airflow is continuouslyvariable by means of 24V modulatingactuators. Ventilators can be controlledby Passivent’s range of thermostaticcontrols or programmable controllers,or linked to a building energymanagement system. Passivent also offera range of control sensors fortemperature, CO2 and wind for exposedlocations.

Modular applicationsAircool ventilators can also be suppliedin modular form, see page 10.

The Hybrid Plus Aircool combines thefeatures of the Aircool ventilator with aninnovative air tempering and mixing unitutilising a single energy efficient low powersweep fan (when required).

It can be used in a range of differentstrategies including Passive stack and singlesided ventilation.

It provides low airflow resistance thatenables the combined unit to also beoperated in passive mode without the fanrunning when not required.

In peak summer conditions, the energyefficient low power fan can be activated topromote air movement keeping theventilation strategy operating andtemperatures under control.

In unusual building occupancy events suchas the generation of excessive CO2 levels orexcessive heat gains such as occasional highdensity occupation, the fan can also beactivated to purge the space more rapidlythan a passive ventilation system will allow. In winter, colder spring and autumn periodsthe Hybrid Plus Aircool tempers theincoming air with warmer internal air beforeit enters the space thereby minimising therisk of cold draughts for the occupants.

The Hybrid Aircool Plus is one of theslimmest in its class due to the uniqueinternal design, only using a single 50wenergy efficient fan and can either bemounted within a dedicated bulkhead, within a suspended ceiling or exposed in thespace due to its white finished appearanceand diffuser grille. The Aircool part of theunit can be integrated into most window andwall applications enabling a flexibility of use.

Effective and intelligent control of theHybrid Plus Aircool is critical to maximisingit’s performance and can be effectivelyoperated using the Passivent iC8000controller which can be integrated through a building management system. Internalcombined CO2 and temperature sensorsalong with an external temperature sensorare used with pre-defined set points fordifferent operating modes.

THERMAL AIRCOOL

The Passivent Thermal Aircool has beenspecifically designed to supply buildings withwarm, fresh air during cooler weatherparticularly when the Hybrid Plus Aircool isnot suitable due to inadequate availability of“free heat” from the room itself or arequirement for higher airflows than can beprovided when in passive mode.

The Thermal Aircool will also provide afresh air inlet in warmer conditions, whenair warming is not required thus providefresh air ventilation throughout the year anda secure night cooling strategy in warmerweather.

The Thermal Aircool system incorporates alow resistance airflow heater coil, which hasbeen specially designed for naturalventilation systems and is connected into themain central heating system of the building. An integral temperature sensor preciselycontrols the heater coil. Combined with thePassivent range of natural ventilationcontrollers, this ensures the correct level ofventilation is supplied at the requiredtemperature.

The Thermal Aircool also incorporates allthe features and benefits of the standardAircool (see page 4).

SizesEnquire for available sizes and minimum depth requirements.

The Acoustic Aircool range is available inwall and window versions. The range hasbeen developed to meet increasedregulation requirements for soundreduction, and the increased noiseexposure resulting from the greater use ofbrownfield sites.

Independent test data to BS EN 20140-10is available on request, with detailedperformance figures for each application.

Depending on requirements, acousticventilators may have a single or doublerow of internal acoustic chevrons, acousticliners. For special high noise reductionrequirements, Passivent can design andmanufacture bespoke ventilators tomaximise sound reduction and minimiseairflow resistance so as to achieve targetair change rates.

Passivent Aircool acoustic façadeventilators can be complemented byPassivent Soundscoop and Soundscoop iAT(intelligent airflow technology) acousticventilators for internal air transfer. This broader product range providesdesigners with the opportunity to adoptcomplete natural ventilation solutionswhere buildings have high external noiselevels.

OTHER APPLICATIONS

Modular applicationsAircool ventilators and the various elementsthat make the total unit can also be suppliedin modular form, with the external weatherlouvres (also with the patented double bankweather louvre system), internal insulateddampers and internal cover grilles asseparate components, providing extraflexibility in ventilation design.

Passive stack ventilationThis design using passive stack ventilationwas successfully adopted in a multi-storeybuilding to meet fire regulations and reducerisk of ‘cross talk’ (ie sound leakage between floors).

Natural ventilation was achieved by passiveinduced cross ventilation before entering thestack. Fresh air was introduced at thewindows and drawn across rooms, thenthrough Aircool dampers, and extracted athigh level through Aircool windowventilators located at the top of the lightwell/stack.

Aircool insulated dampers were used incombination with fire dampers to maintainthe integrity of fire protection betweenfloors. Acoustic chevrons were fitted behindthe Aircool dampers to the louvres to provideacoustic attenuation between floors. Aircooldampers positioned in the rooms gave theusers controllability with individual room airvolume control, and provided thermalinsulation during unoccupied periods.

In exposed locations Passivent patentedsecondary weather baffles were fitted behindthe external weather louvres to provide aClass A weather rejection performance.Aircool extracts can be located in high levelwindow frames, behind weather louvres, within a terminal arrangement or inpurpose-designed parapet walls.
