Use CasesSmall- and Medium-Sized Businesses

SMBs typically need fewer servers than large businesses. Many have few or no full-time IT staff members. With Cisco UCS Mini, SMBs can have an easy-to-manage solution that can grow with them as their business grows. Because Cisco UCS Mini is so easy to manage, they can spend more time running their business and less time worrying about maintenance and upgrades. Cisco UCS Manager helps make arcane processes mundane. If a server fails, all the configuration and identity information simply gets associated with the new server, and the system can be back up in minutes instead of hours or days.

Remote Office, Branch Office and Retail Environments

Like SMBs, many remote and branch offices lack local IT staff. For these locations, the remote management features of Cisco UCS Mini are especially valuable. If a user reports a problem, there’s no need to send a technician onsite to perform the initial troubleshooting. Cisco UCS Manager can be remotely accessed from any computer on the network, saving time and budget and providing faster resolution of problems to keep users satisfied.

With Cisco UCS Central Software added to the solution, managing 100 locations can be as easy as managing one. Using global policies that apply to all locations, Cisco UCS Central Software keeps all instances of Cisco UCS Mini up-to-date, consistent, and compliant with company polices.

The Cisco UCS Mini solution is a powerful computing and I/O platform capable of taking in and preprocessing large amounts of data very quickly. It’s an excellent choice when large amounts of data must be collected at remote sites and processed prior to transmission on a slow WAN or satellite link. Preprocessed data can be made available to local and remote users much more quickly.

Use CasesData Center Sometimes compliance requires physical hardware separation. For

example, companies that want to outsource their server needs may not want their server equipment located in the same domain as another company’s servers. Other companies may be very risk adverse and require very small failure domains. With Cisco UCS management, maintaining smaller domains of 2 to 15 servers is no longer a management challenge.

Private Cloud Provide multitenant or dedicated private cloud in an affordable, cost savings model. Cisco UCS Mini allows each tenant to have its own Cisco UCS domain without incurring the cost of standard Fabric Interconnects. This provides substantial savings for service providers and allows them to pass these savings along to their customers.

Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS)

Gives service providers the flexibility to offer a “many to one” DRaaS model in which Cisco UCS Mini is located at an alternative DR site. This approach can take advantage of multiple designs, including standard connections from Cisco UCS to Cisco UCS Mini, Cisco UCS Mini to Cisco UCS Mini, or even multiple rack servers to Cisco UCS Mini via hypervisors such as VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, and KVM.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Allows service providers to offer IaaS, starting with one computing node and scaling up to 15 nodes in a single Cisco UCS domain. Cisco UCS C240 M3 or M4 Rack Servers can be attached to provide software-defined storage or a hyperconverged infrastructure.

Backup as a Service (BaaS)

The ability to offer BaaS. By adding Cisco UCS C3160 or C240 M3 or M4 Rack Servers to Cisco UCS Mini, service providers can use backup software such as Veeam, Scality, ComVault, Daegis, Simplivity, VSAN, and more for this service.

Use CasesLab/DevOps SMBs or large service providers can use Cisco UCS Mini for their labs

and DevOps. Since application teams can be very segmented or siloed and demand their own dedicated gear, the cost model of Cisco UCS Mini can allow every team or department to have its own system for development, testing, and labs. And with autosensing power supplies, Cisco UCS Mini can even run under someone’s desk in remote offices, branch-office sites, or small offices.

Colocation Co-location hosting on or off premises. Many customers may want hardware at their site but they do not want to manage or to own it. Service providers can offer this capability as a service with very little investment. They can grow the solution as the customers’ needs grow, with the option of moving the full setup back to the data center. Self-service portals are also an option.

Identifying and Qualifying ProspectsLook for:•Smaller organizations that need few (2 to 15) physical servers and simple server management

(The number of future servers shouldn’t be confused with the number of current servers. For example, Advanced Medical Transport consolidated 36 rack servers to a four-blade Cisco UCS Mini solution; the fourth blade helps ensure that the company can tolerate a server failure.)

•Customers without full time IT staff or that want options for remote management by a service provider or partner

•Customers that want to trade scale for simplicity and reduced cost

•Larger midmarket organizations with several remote and branch offices; Cisco UCS Mini can support both types of offices with little to no local IT staff, maintaining a consistent environment and experience from the data center to the edge

•SMB customers still running Windows Server 2003

•Customers who need IaaS or private cloud in a small, affordable footprint

•Customer who want a unified solution like Cisco UCS, but in a smaller and less expensive format

•RFP responses that compete with HP, Dell, Supermicro and others in a smaller form factor but require an enterprise-class, supported solution

•Customers, employees, DevOps, and IT staff who use public cloud services because the company is unable to deliver infrastructure rapidly and within budget

•Customers who want to quickly add or expand a new solution but want to be able to manage and maintain it with their existing Cisco UCS infrastructure and staff

•Customers looking for a single integrated and converged system with a “single pane of glass” for management and maintenance

Question Background InformationHow are you supporting your remote locations?

Remote- or branch-office locations without a dedicated IT staff may have to use solutions that were designed for the data center, or solutions that support edge scale but can’t be centrally managed. This can lead to lack of consistency across sites, creating maintenance challenges and increasing CapEx. Cisco UCS Mini is well suited for organizations with remote- or branch-office locations. It’s optimized for smaller IT departments yet still delivers the servers, storage, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet networking of Cisco UCS. Also, Cisco UCS management software can enable remote management access from any computer on the network, saving time and budget and providing faster resolutions to keep users satisfied.

How are you going to simplify and optimize server environment so you can achieve greater productivity and efficiency while also cutting costs?

What if I told you that you could repurpose a server in three minutes in a totally automated manner, without the need for you to physically touch the system? Imagine the time and money you could save with a simpler, more agile system. You could have less configuration drift and fewer configuration errors and software licenses. And you would benefit from fewer cables, network interface cards, host bus adapters, ports, and switches.

With Cisco UCS Mini, you can change a server’s personality (BIOS, firmware, and network and storage settings; complete hardware abstraction) in an automated and consistent manner that’s less complex and costly than traditional models. You can also increase asset utilization by extending virtualization across data center resources. For example, a customer effectively virtualized 95 percent of all operating systems and cut its OpEx in two leased data centers by as much as 25 percent with more efficient use of virtualization.

18Sales Accelerator: Cisco UCS Mini © 2015 Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. — Cisco Confidential.

Qualifiers and Conversation StartersQuestion Background InformationWhat is your strategy to simplify the way your data center connects to the server infrastructure?

One of Cisco’s latest fabric-centric server innovations is Cisco SingleConnect technology. It provides several advantages:

•Zero-touch, wire-once, I/O resource allocation model

•77 percent reduction in cabling

•Dramatic fabric simplification of networking and cabling infrastructure

•Superior, zero-touch server scalability and predictable quality of service

•Quantifiable and tangible CapEx and OpEx savings

What is your plan to simplify your IT infrastructure and concentrate on running your organization?

Cisco UCS Mini can drastically simplify your IT infrastructure. It’s an all-in-one solution that unifies computing, networking, storage access, and management resources into a single platform, reducing your costs and enhancing application performance and scalability. With Cisco UCS Mini, you can spend less time trying to manage disparate servers and more time running your organization.

How do you handle the complexity of multiple management tools and consoles: one each for servers, storage, and networking?

Cisco UCS Mini helps eliminate management complexity by consolidating servers, storage, and networking into a single solution and providing an intuitive graphical user interface where you can manage all hardware and software together. You can optionally add Cisco UCS Central Software to your Cisco UCS Mini solution as well to enable remote management of branch office locations, further simplifying your IT environment.

Qualifiers and Conversation StartersAdditional conversation starters:

•How are you planning to rapidly add tenants and to keep them isolated?

•How long does it currently take to do server firmware updates? And how painful is that process?

•Are you in danger of losing business to the likes of Amazon? How can you limit public cloud use and maintain and grow your existing customer base?

• If you’re planning to offer a self-service portal for smaller footprints or clients, what’s your strategy?

• If you want to use pricing to encourage IasS usage and offerings, how do you plan to do this?

•What platforms are you looking at that are small and affordable and offer easy, single-pane-of-glass management of hardware, firmware, adapters, and infrastructure components?

•Are you implementing a remote-office or branch-office deployment where there is no IT staff and a traditional infrastructure still running at 1 Gbps?

•Are tenants asking you to provide co-location services when you own and manage the gear but it remains at the customer site indefinitely? Or are there plans to move it to your data center in the future?

Potential Objections and ResponsesObjection Your ResponseBlades are too expensive. Cisco UCS Mini SmartPlays, SeedIT, and NAB programs provide an

easy way get the advantages of a blade solution without the higher costs of traditional blade solutions.

I don’t have the resources or the time to manage blades.

Cisco UCS Mini is easier to manage than rack servers and competitor blade servers. It will save you time and administration costs.

I don’t have time to take on any new initiatives right now.

That’s understandable. I would suggest a briefing with one of our experts. This solution does not take much time to implement and if you are an existing Cisco UCS customer it is nearly identical.

I don’t have budget to undertake any new projects right now.

You might be able to save a lot of money as many of our customers have. That might help justify the expenses. For example, the labor hours devoted to manually provisioning and maintaining could be drastically reduced by this approach. This is an aggressively priced solution and is probably far less than you might expect. Have you thought about financing through Cisco Capital®? They can finance the entire solution, including hardware, software, services, and complementary third-party equipment. You can find out more about financing options at ciscocapital.com.

I don’t have the in-house resources to manage a transition to a new architecture.

Cisco and our channel partners deliver services to make it easier and faster. We use proven methodologies and best practices to support your business transformation. And to make sure the migration happens the way you need. Our architectural approach efficiently consolidates, virtualizes, standardizes, and automates a unified data center. We can also bundle in training credits to help train and prepare your stuff. Our local sales force can even provide some on the spot training and seminars.

Have you fully explored the security vulnerabilities and risks associated with this approach? Has your team been called upon to help when a cloud service is not working properly? Have you factored that into your resourcing model? Do you have customers starting to use public cloud services, which can be damaging for your business? Options Trade-OffBlade-Only Configuration Storage capacity is limited to a maximum of 16 hard drives.

This limit can be reduced with a solution like StorMagic, which aggregates all storage so any blade can access it and also provides resiliency.

Blade and Rack Configuration Somewhat more complex, and has a larger footprint than a blade-only solution, but provides increased storage options and support of specialized PCIe devices like NVIDIA GPUs or fax cards.

With Third-Party Storage Such as Nimble, NetApp, and EMC

Some solutions will directly connect to the fabric interconnect. All will connect via an upstream Cisco Nexus® Family switch. A comprehensive plan needs to be made for northbound switching infrastructure and storage simultaneously. Also keep in mind the number of ports available on the fabric interconnect and the licensing for the 40-Gbps port.
