Chronology of Implementation of Cambridge Starters in Mukah Schools

Past Happenings 2001 A private primary school, SR Sri Mawar in Miri, Sarawak signed up to

implement Cambridge Starters Awards (now known as Cambridge ICT Starters). This was the first pilot private school in Sarawak to implement the ICT program.

2001 Launching of Cambridge ICT Starters in SK Datu Pengiran Mohamad, Oya,

by YAB Pehin Sri Dr. Hj. Abdul Taib Mahmud, Chief Minister of Sarawak. This school became the first pilot Government primary school to implement the program.

The PTA took the initiative to put up a computer lab. 40 sets of computers

were donated by Datuk Hamed Sepawi and Datuk Effendi Norwawi. Nov 2001 The ICT program, after it was implemented for a year, has helped the SR Sri

Mawar Private Primary school to achieve outstanding result in the Government Primary Six Evaluation Test, UPSR. The school was awarded the outstanding result in UPSR by the Education Ministry.

1 November 2002 Danawa Resources Sdn Bhd was officially given the franchise and the sole

Ministry of Sumber Alam and Yayasan Mukah bored the cost of the renovation of computer lab, supply of computers and installation of Internet facilities

16 – 18 Aug 2004 19 Teachers from SK Datuk Awang Udin(2), SK Dua Sungai(4), SK

Kampung Jebungan(3), SK Kampung Tellian(5) and SK DPM Oya (5) attended the first training session at SK Datuk Awang Udin. The teachers sat for the assessment at the end of the training session.

SR Sri Mawar started using the new ICT workbook by Cambridge

University Press. Although the Education has ceased to give away the Outstanding UPSR result award to schools, SR Sri Mawar has once even performed better and achieved a 100% pass in the 2004 UPSR and with more than 30% of the candidates scored straight A’s.

Jan 2005 At SK Datuk Awang Udin, the ICT Starters program were introduced to 50

Primary 6 pupils (2 classes) in the afternoon. SK Dua Sungai, SK Kampung Jebungan and SK Kampung Tellian were not

able to implement the project because the computer labs were not ready then. 27 March 2005 Samsudin Kasdi and William Ng from Danawa visited SK Datuk Awang

Udin to monitor the progress of the ICT program. A mock test was given to the 50 Primary 6 pupils. The results were not

satisfactory because the teachers involved were new teachers who have not attended the training. William Ng gave a briefing on how the assessment should be conducted and advised the teachers to give revision before the actual assessment in July.

Samsudin and William made courtesy call to the Divisional Education

Officer, Encik Bedui and briefed him on the CIS program. They then visited SK Kampung Teh Mukah, SK Kampung Jebungan, SK Dua Sungai and SK DPM Oya. The purpose of the trip was to study the proposed rooms for the computer labs in SK Kampung Teh* and SK Dua Sungai.

* SK Kampung Teh was not in the original list of schools proposed. Although

SK Kampung Jebungan was previously dropped in the new proposed list, we counter proposed to drop SK Kampung Tellian instead of SK Kampung Jebungan because SK Kampung Tellian has no permanent building yet and is currently squatting with SK Mukah.

150 copies of the workbook were supplied to SK Datuk Awang Udin, and

SK DPM Oya. 50 copies from SK Datuk Awang Udin were then diverted to SK Kampung Jebungan because the teachers in the schools were very keen to start the program with their 10 existing computers.

27 June 2005 A meeting with the representatives from Mukah Education Office and the

Headmasters of the 5 schools involved were called at the Mukah Education

Page 3: CIS Chronology

Office. The main agenda were to have dialogue with the local Education officers and the Headmasters to find strategies to ensure that the CIS program can be implemented smoothly.

The Mukah Education Office promised to bear the cost of the renovation of

the two computer labs in SK Kampung Teh and SK Dua Sungai. Training for the teachers were agreed and scheduled on 22 and 23 July 2005 at SK Datuk Awang Udin.

1 July 2005 Budget and timeline of implementation were submitted to Yayasan Mukah

for approval. 4 July 2005 Progress report was submitted to

Setiausaha Tetap, Kementerian Perancangan dan Pengurusan Sumber merangkap Setiausaha Lembaga Kumpulan Wang Kawasan Konsesi Hutan (Pemulihan & Pembangunan) (u.p. Encik Kameri Haji Affandi) and to Tuan Jeli Bohari, Setiausaha Eksekutif kepada Ketua Meneteri Sarawak.

11 July 2005 46 pupils from SK Datuk Awang Udin sat for the first assessment on the first

module (Starting with Text). The assessments were conducted by Ustaz Ahmadazra B Sa’adi of SK Datuk Awang Udin, assisted by William Ng and Elizabeth H Giang from Danawa.

18 July 2005 Greenlight were given by Yayasan Mukah to proceed with the purchase of

computers. 53 sets of computers were then ordered. (21 sets each for SK Dua Sungai and SK Kampung Teh Mukah, 11 sets for

SK Kampung Jebungan - SK Kampung Jebungan were given less because of its lower population.) The computers are expected to be delivered to Mukah by 30 July 2005.

Sending official letter to Pegawai Pelajaran Gabungan Mukah (with copies to

Pengarah Pelajaran Sarawak) seeking official approval for installation of the computers in SK Kampung Jebungan, SK Dua Sungai and SK Kampung Teh Mukah.

21 July 2005 William Ng and Elizabeth H Giang from Danawa visited SK Kampung

Jebungan and SK Kampung Teh Mukah to check on the progress of the renovation of the computer labs.

The computer lab at SK Kampung Jebungan is ready. We expect the lab to

be furnished by the 4th week of July. By the first week of August, computers, network, internet facilities are expected to be set up.
